Don Muang Taxi Scam

I'm currently live in Thailand, my friends from the USA came here on vacation for the first time.  I had taken them to Chiang Mia, Hua Hin and Phuket.  On the trip from Chiang Mai we arrived at Don Muang, got in line like everyone else and waited for a taxi.  They called us over and gave us a slip with with the drivers name and id number and so forth. With an address and phone number to call in case we had any problems, the driver was one of the older ones, and I spoke Thai to him, so I didn't expect this to happen.  

Now my friends had about 5 pieces or luggage, and the taxi driver clearly saw this as he helped load them in the taxi. We got in and he asked for the slip I was given, and I gave it to him like the idiot I was. Once I told him where we were going, Swissotel Le Concorde on Rachadapiesk he drove off, about half way through the trip he said that he didn't know where it was (thank god that he was going in the right direction).  As soon as I gave more precise directions (I might of drove) we arrived and unloaded. As soon as my friends were gonna pay the fare marked on the meter, the driver insisted that they pay an extra 200thb cause of the all their luggage.  

 I immediately complained asked him why he didn't say anything at the airport, as he knew how much stuff we had. But he just kept on insisting, I was not about to pay this loser, but my friends went ahead and paid anyways. 

 Not really a scam but a warning, keep the slip they give you at the airport incase it happens to you!!

When you arrive at Don Muang make your way to the departures level, walk outside to where in-coming passengers are being dropped off, hail taxi, make sure driver switches meter on.

200 thb is what he insisted on top of the metered fare. any taxi driver could have done this, including the ones on the departure level that you mentioned, and it was the first time it happened to me.

Don't call those taxi cabs.You might get mugged or get killed.Every time I go to Thailand I always catch a Thai airways limo which the counter is inside.You pay a little bit higher but it is safer and don't have to worry about things like this.

The Taxi service outside Don Muang is perfectly safe, use the taxi ticket counter, over 13 years of using this aiport me or my friends have never had trouble from any of the drivers. I f you are unsure about where you are going, buy a map and follow the route also ask the office how long the drive takes.

I met my Thia friend at the airport & got a taxi to a hotel. A metered taxi & paid the 50B. When I got out, I asked her to pay 170B because I had no bart. I was on my way to the entrance with the luggage while she payed.She wanted to pay 250B [70B] tip.She gave him 1000B note & he gave her 700B change. When she complained he told he was taking the money anyway & drove off. She didn't tell me until later because she didn't want me to start creating. Extorting your own tip from a Thai !!

I paid 131 Baht for a taxi ride from the Baiyoke Sky hotel to Don Mueang airport with thge meter switched on. Originally the driver wanted 300 Baht as a bargaining price, but I know my way around and insisted the meter be switched on.

O yes, I also had a GPS going, ostensibly playing around with it, but making sure nthe taxi-driver knew I was monitoring the trip. Also just in case, use your mobile to take a photo of the taxi driver id displayed in the taxi among all the buddist parephanalia on the dash board. I have never had any trouble using metered taxis. If they don't want to switch the meter on just take another taxi. Also, monitor the rate the meter changes. I once had an incident where the taxi driver had a secret switch under his door armrest which he used to advance the meter. This incident was not in Bangkok, but Kuala Lumpur. THe cretin was rather surprised when I exposed this scam!

Even though the taxis are supposed to go by the meter, some of them do not. I was at the Sakphang (sp?) Taksin BTS station. I wanted to go to Yaowarat, I flagged a taxi and the driver immediately say 100 baht which I refused as Yaowarat is not really that far from BTS. So I just flagged another taxi down who went by the meter.

When I was in Bangkok in March 2007 I wanted to go to the grand palace from Nana. I flagged down 6 taxis asked them all to turn the meter on and was told prices from 500-1000bht. The seventh taxi agreed to turn on meter so off we went. He said traffic heavy so it would be better to get a boat via the river. i said you take me to ferry he said no private boat i said how much he said 2000bht I said no thanks you take me. Then he pulled over and he said he did not have time. Then he asked me for the fare I said i am not paying as you not take me where I want to go. He said you go here I said you get fare when you take me to Grand Palace he said no so i got out and he drove off. I did not know where i was lucky I have a good sense of direction and found the sky train.
