Tourists lose valuables in scanner scam at airport
The Nation, 7th May 2007

There have been numerous reports of theft at Suvarnabhumi Airport, police say, including at least two from tourists who say their valuables disappeared while they were being scanned.

German tourist Dr Richard Chrobop, 60, said his 2.5-karat diamond ring, worth about Bt500,000, disappeared while going through a scanner at the airport when he was flying back to Germany on April 24.

Police also received a complaint yesterday from a Japanese tourist who said 800 euros (Bt 35,400) in cash disappeared from his bag while it was being scanned at the airport.

Photographs retrieved from the scanning machine show that Chrobop's diamond ring disappeared after it entered the machine, said an airport official who asked not to be named.

Piyarat Donbandit, a relative of the doctor, filed a complaint with Rachadheva Police on his behalf.

Piyarat said Chrobop put a jacket and other possessions, including the ring, into a basket to pass through the scanning machine at the departure exit. The ring was gone when the basket came out from the other side, Piyarat said.

Airport staff refused the doctor's request to meet police but gave him a compensation claim form and rushed him to his plane, Piyarat said.

The airport official said photographs from the scanner showed that the ring was in the basket as it passed through the scanner.

The official declined, however, to comment further, saying it might affect the reputation of Airports of Thailand.

Piyarat said he had written to airport officials asking to check the scanner's photographic record but was provided with unclear CCTV pictures taken from one angle. He was told that there was only one camera in the area.

Lt-Colonel Sitthichai Champa-ngam, an investigator at Rachadheva Police Station, said there had been numerous complaints about possessions lost at the airport.

It has been difficult to investigate the claims because the airport does not cooperate, Sitthichai said. To examine CCTV records at the airport, police have to send official letters asking for permission from the airport.

"I believe someone took the ring while it was passing through the machine," Sitthichai said.

It is difficult to believe there is only one CCTV in the area, he said.

"[Theft by airport staff] is not good for image of the country," he added.

Now this is an interesting one...far more valuable stuff is coming off our hands and out of our pockets and into the maw of the airport scanner in a plastic dish than we have been used to in the past. And we are really vulnerable to theft at that stage. At Heathrow only a couple of months ago I saw a guy looose a brand new (he later told me) laptop while it was going through security. I know that my response of late has been to carry very little of value with me on os trips.
Ps "nice site u have here."

I have had a similar experience at LUTON AIRPORT, ENGLAND on 2 May 07.

While waiting for a plastic box containing my valuables, passport included, to come through the scanner, an unthinkable event happened. Someone had snatched my passport as I was busily putting on my belt. The moment I went to reach for my passport a clerk was removing the box away. I said, 'Excuse me, my passport is in there!' He gave me a blank look and answered to me, 'nothing in here, Mate!' I said, 'My passport is in that box'. He went to have another look, but said 'no!' I told him 'I have lost my passport', but he simply shrugged it off as if to say 'Not my problem!' I thought that was big of him. A long long moment went by, I was approached by an elderly couple. The lady said 'Sorry, I picked this (my passport) up by mistake!'. I felt so relieved, but still angry, quickly grabbed hold of my dear old passport and put it away safely.

The moral of the story is I will never place my passport in that bloody plastic box again before it goes through any scanner again. Imagine what a mess I'd have got myself into if the lady hadn't return it.

They took my lighters away. I had some very nice lighters as presents for friends. After scanning my bag at Don Muang (2 years ago), the official there insisted in opening my bag. There were 3 new and empty lighters inside. The guy took 2 of my lighters saying that only 1 lighter was allowed per person. Bastards, I was leaving for Europe with not much time left to argue so I just had to forget about it and the bastard got himself 2 nice lighters worth probably about 2 days work salary. That's TH...

Thats Thailand, the land of smiles and scams

Yes, land of smiles and scams just about sums up Thailand from the tourist's point of view. While it is true that theft can occur anywhere, theft and scams seem to be far more prevalent in Thailand than anywhere else in the world. Even, if you manage to avoid being scammed in Thailand, it's a nuisance to have to be constantly on the look-out for scams. You can avoid the taxi scams by walking but that is inconvenient and not always feasible. You can avoid most of the other scams by simply saying no to anyone who offers you anything. What it boils down to is that if you travel to Thailand you have to totally distrust the local people. This takes from the enjoyment of the holiday. My answer to this is to travel elsewhere for my holidays in future. If enough people did this, the authorities in Thailand might find that they have to start enforcing the law.

The whole airport is a scam. They are there to rob and steal from you at every turn. The cops are in on it and it is almost guaranteed that newbies will be robbed. It is far worse than Don Muang ever was and it will never be fixed whilst too many have their snouts in the trough.

At the return of my last visit in Thailand, when my carry-on bag was scanned they asked me to open it and when they saw i had some Thai amulets in it (with price tags still on them), the girl searching my bag asked me to give her one because i had many, she snatched one worth 800 baht and i had a hard time getting her to give it back.
I told her that i was expecting whores in Patpong to behave like this, not security people at the airport...Then she placed it back and told me rudely to go now...
Yes, there are defenetely people of dubious honnesty working at the airport!

This is a technique that thieves use at airport scanners to steal laptops. They get in line in front of the victim followed by an accomplice who has a large assortment of objects requiring successive trips back through the body scanner. By the time the victim gets through the scanner his laptop is long gone.

I have never been scammed at any of the 2 airports or any other airport in Thailand, just be careful with your belongings, keep cameras etc in your hand luggage and use TSA approved padlocks.

Do not be afraid of Bkk , the Thai people are generally wonderfull. Enjoy your trip.
