Tourists lose valuables in scanner scam at airport
The Nation, 7th May 2007

There have been numerous reports of theft at Suvarnabhumi Airport, police say, including at least two from tourists who say their valuables disappeared while they were being scanned.

German tourist Dr Richard Chrobop, 60, said his 2.5-karat diamond ring, worth about Bt500,000, disappeared while going through a scanner at the airport when he was flying back to Germany on April 24.

Police also received a complaint yesterday from a Japanese tourist who said 800 euros (Bt 35,400) in cash disappeared from his bag while it was being scanned at the airport.

Photographs retrieved from the scanning machine show that Chrobop's diamond ring disappeared after it entered the machine, said an airport official who asked not to be named.

Piyarat Donbandit, a relative of the doctor, filed a complaint with Rachadheva Police on his behalf.

Piyarat said Chrobop put a jacket and other possessions, including the ring, into a basket to pass through the scanning machine at the departure exit. The ring was gone when the basket came out from the other side, Piyarat said.

Airport staff refused the doctor's request to meet police but gave him a compensation claim form and rushed him to his plane, Piyarat said.

The airport official said photographs from the scanner showed that the ring was in the basket as it passed through the scanner.

The official declined, however, to comment further, saying it might affect the reputation of Airports of Thailand.

Piyarat said he had written to airport officials asking to check the scanner's photographic record but was provided with unclear CCTV pictures taken from one angle. He was told that there was only one camera in the area.

Lt-Colonel Sitthichai Champa-ngam, an investigator at Rachadheva Police Station, said there had been numerous complaints about possessions lost at the airport.

It has been difficult to investigate the claims because the airport does not cooperate, Sitthichai said. To examine CCTV records at the airport, police have to send official letters asking for permission from the airport.

"I believe someone took the ring while it was passing through the machine," Sitthichai said.

It is difficult to believe there is only one CCTV in the area, he said.

"[Theft by airport staff] is not good for image of the country," he added.

Now this is an interesting one...far more valuable stuff is coming off our hands and out of our pockets and into the maw of the airport scanner in a plastic dish than we have been used to in the past. And we are really vulnerable to theft at that stage. At Heathrow only a couple of months ago I saw a guy looose a brand new (he later told me) laptop while it was going through security. I know that my response of late has been to carry very little of value with me on os trips.
Ps "nice site u have here."

I have had a similar experience at LUTON AIRPORT, ENGLAND on 2 May 07.

While waiting for a plastic box containing my valuables, passport included, to come through the scanner, an unthinkable event happened. Someone had snatched my passport as I was busily putting on my belt. The moment I went to reach for my passport a clerk was removing the box away. I said, 'Excuse me, my passport is in there!' He gave me a blank look and answered to me, 'nothing in here, Mate!' I said, 'My passport is in that box'. He went to have another look, but said 'no!' I told him 'I have lost my passport', but he simply shrugged it off as if to say 'Not my problem!' I thought that was big of him. A long long moment went by, I was approached by an elderly couple. The lady said 'Sorry, I picked this (my passport) up by mistake!'. I felt so relieved, but still angry, quickly grabbed hold of my dear old passport and put it away safely.

The moral of the story is I will never place my passport in that bloody plastic box again before it goes through any scanner again. Imagine what a mess I'd have got myself into if the lady hadn't return it.

They took my lighters away. I had some very nice lighters as presents for friends. After scanning my bag at Don Muang (2 years ago), the official there insisted in opening my bag. There were 3 new and empty lighters inside. The guy took 2 of my lighters saying that only 1 lighter was allowed per person. Bastards, I was leaving for Europe with not much time left to argue so I just had to forget about it and the bastard got himself 2 nice lighters worth probably about 2 days work salary. That's TH...

Thats Thailand, the land of smiles and scams

written by Eileen McAuley, Sun 16 Dec 2007 01:04:34 CST
Yes, land of smiles and scams just about sums up Thailand from the tourist's point of view. While it is true that theft can occur anywhere, theft and scams seem to be far more prevalent in Thailand than anywhere else in the world. Even, if you manage to avoid being scammed in Thailand, it's a nuisance to have to be constantly on the look-out for scams. You can avoid the taxi scams by walking but that is inconvenient and not always feasible. You can avoid most of the other scams by simply saying no to anyone who offers you anything. What it boils down to is that if you travel to Thailand you have to totally distrust the local people. This takes from the enjoyment of the holiday. My answer to this is to travel elsewhere for my holidays in future. If enough people did this, the authorities in Thailand might find that they have to start enforcing the law.

The whole airport is a scam. They are there to rob and steal from you at every turn. The cops are in on it and it is almost guaranteed that newbies will be robbed. It is far worse than Don Muang ever was and it will never be fixed whilst too many have their snouts in the trough.

At the return of my last visit in Thailand, when my carry-on bag was scanned they asked me to open it and when they saw i had some Thai amulets in it (with price tags still on them), the girl searching my bag asked me to give her one because i had many, she snatched one worth 800 baht and i had a hard time getting her to give it back.
I told her that i was expecting whores in Patpong to behave like this, not security people at the airport...Then she placed it back and told me rudely to go now...
Yes, there are defenetely people of dubious honnesty working at the airport!

This is a technique that thieves use at airport scanners to steal laptops. They get in line in front of the victim followed by an accomplice who has a large assortment of objects requiring successive trips back through the body scanner. By the time the victim gets through the scanner his laptop is long gone.

I have never been scammed at any of the 2 airports or any other airport in Thailand, just be careful with your belongings, keep cameras etc in your hand luggage and use TSA approved padlocks.

Do not be afraid of Bkk , the Thai people are generally wonderfull. Enjoy your trip.

Dear All,

My Dept secretary informed me on this. Her cousin was detained in Bangkok for stealing a box of cigarettes in a duty-free shop in Bangkok International Airport.

He had paid for chocolates and a carton of cigarettes. The cashier put a packet of smokes into his bag and he thought it was a free pack. He was arrested for shop-lifting and the Thai Police extortion price was RM30,000 for his release. He spent two nights in jail and paid RM50 for an air-cond cell, 200-300 baht for each visitor, and RM11,000 for his final release.

The Police shared the money in front of his eyes. On top of that, he was charged in court and fined RM2,000 by the magistrate and handcuffed and escorted to his plane. His passport was stamped "Thief". While there, his relatives requested help from the Malaysian Embassy and was told that they are helpless, as M'sians are victimised similarly daily and letters and phone-calls to the Thai Authorities are ignored.

He shared a cell with a Singaporean the 1st night who paid RM60,000 for his release. The 2nd night was an Indian national who paid USD70,000.

Mind you this is not in a shag downtown Bangkok but in a duty free shop in Bangkok's Int'l Airport.

BE WARNED!!!!!

Thank you.

Chiptw, what a horrific story, I felt extremely sad when I read this. I have heard the story about the duty free shops as well, people buying cigarettes the Bangkok end (it should be the duty free side!) and getting stopped and severely fined like thousands and thousands of dollars and prison as well. I think you should write to the media in your country and inform them of the scams that are going on, they are even stealing from the "carry ons" whilst you are going through the security scanner, hence always make sure valuables, like phones, wallets, ipods etc are locked up in your handbags/bumbags with a solid lock! Your foreign office should make the Thai embassy accountable for their dispicable behaviour!

A packet of smokes in his back. Was that the dutyfreeshopback with the carton of cigarettes? There shouldbe camaras. Why didnt he, or the embassy contact a lawyer? Probably he didnt get a receipt for the money paid, but they stamped thief in his passport. He spent to nights in jail. Got any release papers?
Thai authoritis have to notify the embassy when a foreigner is locked up. Missed his plain. How much did this cost him?
If he had not paid how much more time they could hold him?
They would have had to put him to trial. For one packet of sigs?
How much: 1 year? Would have been a scandal.
If Malaysian authorities clame this happens often they should have made an official complain and give a negative travel advice for Suvarnapum. Why did they remain so inactive? Maybe some lawyer reading this can tell us something more about this mysterious case. And for the victim: Go and see a lawyer and find out what can be done.

Yes, but how did the victem, asumed he is innocent, payed all that money. Usely one doesnt carry those amounts in your wallet, for sure not in a country like Thailand. Did he write a travellers cheque? Used visa? Then one knows who received it. Or did he go to the bank, in chanes like to the airport to cash that amount of money. They ATM machine registers amount and time. He was not on the plane he was supposed to be on. There is a thief stamp in his passport. He was taken to the plane handcuffed and deported. There is a record of when the shoplifting happened.
So if he didnt pay cash what seems unlikely he can have a case.

He said they devided the money in front of his eyes. RM 30000 11000? Or only 11000? So he paid cash. He just had it in his wallet? Or did family bring it? An Indian man. paid 70000 USD. To the court or to the police? I asume he didnt carry that money in his backpocket. Same with the other Malaysian. Probably the victem shouldnt have paid the police at all and he would have had only to pay the court fine.

its all true about scams & robbers in Thailand, ive been living in Phuket for 1 year now & i still get conned when i go to buy things, dont buy no thing if theres is no price on it ,,they will just make up a price, just say a t-shirt 100 baht, they will say to you 250 baht then come down to about 150 baht, i my self have had enougth of this place, all these thais look is money, if you no spend no money in shops they not nice peopls all they look is Money, but tell you the truth there are just a handful of nice thais ive met, i read thai news papers every day on line & lots of killings here they will rob you then kill you so theres less of a chance they will get caught, they manly pray on the old, very good read is phuket gazette on line, all i say to all who come to thailand is be very very aware, its best to hire a car than get a taxi, you can hire a car 600 baht a day, when a short taxi ride will cost you 500 baht, plus another good cheap way is a motor-bike, but becarefull as well, if you on a bike never NEVER stop for no 1 unless its for the police, as you will get robbed, its the thing over here, they will ask you to stop to ask you some thing or they may false you to stop, I SAY TO ALL AGAIN BE VERY VERY AWARE DONT TRUST NO ONE HERE, PS PLS do not wear any gold chains or rings they like english gold as thai gold is very expensive and its crap to, good luck if you come to thailand & i hope this message helps all who just want to have a good time, B-SAFE Baz.

Not fun to read about all the negative sides .. But it is sad that some of it is true.

But keep in mind. If some one robbed you.. It might be they think that a person like you have enough or do not deserve better.

As some one else also said here. When you travel.. Do not carry more than you need. Do not bring all your gold .. What do you need it for ? Do not carry more money that you need... And do not shop more than you need. And be friendly even if some one is not nice to you. I have been travel alone in groups, and have friends that travel a lot to Thailand and rest of Asia. It is always the same type of people that are robbed or fooled into problems. There is always two sides of a story. I live in Norway and also on our secure airport at OSL it is reported steeling inside security. Do not think this is only in Thailand.

And it can happend to you to .. If you so stupid that you think that a gold ring can not be taken from you ,.. Think again,... Be nice ....keep safe bring less with you..

We were on a Tiger Airways flight from Phuket to Singapore on April 2nd 2010. We had 4 bags that Tiger Airways said were to heavy and that we would have to check them @ about $20 U.S. dollars. I never have checked my bags in the U.S. it was a weight not a size issue for them (I am an airline employee and know how big a bag can be, and like I said this was a weight issue for them).

When I got to the hotel in Singapore I opened my bag and noticed my contacts and shaving things were out of my shaving bag. Inside my shaving bag I had between $800-1000 U.S. dollars, it was concealed inside the shaving kit, inside a inside a zippered pocket. The shaving kit was also buried at the bottom of my suit case. The money was gone. My expensive wedding ring was there and my Bose headset was still there. The only thing the thieves took was the money.

The other 3 bags that we had checked was not touched. The only way that the thieves knew there was money in my bag was through an x-ray machine. My bag was at baggage claim in Singapore with in 20 minutes after arrival, and in my possession the entire time from when I arrived at the Phuket airport until check in at the counter.

I have checked with the T.S.A. in America and they told me they can see the outline of money in the x-ray machine. (paper shows a reflection). I don't know if the security people took the money, or they called ahead and had the ramp personal take the money. Like I said the other bags were untouched and had no money in them.

I filed a police report and am going to follow up with phone calls to the Phuket airport. I know I will never see any of my money but I hope they can conduct a sting operation. I wrote to Tiger Airways and they gave me the typical airline not their fault letter.

I am still upset about having all that money stolen. I just pray that it went to somebody that really needs it to help their family out.
