Unlicensed Drivers
Monday, 14 May 2007

I am writing this for a friend who does not have internet access.

He has been to Thailand many times and always books a package of flight, hotel and airport transfers with a reputable UK company.

The company provides vouchers for the airport transfer to use with one of their contracted drivers. On his last visit three weeks ago my friend was accosted at the airport by the usual horde of drivers. He showed the voucher and one driver assured him he worked for the company and that the journey would cost nothing.

On arrival at the hotel in Pattaya the driver demanded 2000 baht. My friend refused and went to his room. He was called down a short while later to find the driver in reception with two police officers. He subsequently settled on 1000 baht just to get rid of them even though he showed the voucher to the police.

On contacting the travel company he was told the same thing had happened the previous week. That person had refused to pay anything and no action was taken.

In this situation I would recommend calling the Tourist Police, who generally speak some English.

Having used one of these "limousines" on my first visit to Thailand, I now always use a taxi-meter and insist that the meter is turned on. It is cheaper than you would think.

As a regular visitor to Bangkok, I would advise anyone to make sure the taxi meter is switched on. Of course because so many people use the taxis without the meter, it sometimes becomes impossible to get a taxi when you ask for the meter to be turned on. The night market is a prime example of this .. almost impossible to get a taxi at the correct rate. Be warned.

In Patpong just don't even bother with a taxi driver that isn't in a moving taxi that you haven't waived down yourself.

I agree, always have the meter and for a little footnote, make sure you keep an eye on it as one time the guy switched it off just before we arrived and demanded 100 baht for a 35 baht journet.

I find getting in the taxi, tell them where your going (remember Ka or Krab at the end to make it polite) and then as its moving remind them of the meter.... this way I have always managed to find a taxi.

If its late at night after a club ask meter first, then get in... saves time and agro.

First time catching a cab from bangkok Airport to Sukhimvit, soi 11 in 3 weeks, how much should I expect to pay?

taxi to sukhimvit will cost 250 baht including expressway tolls' plus 50 baht sur-charge at airport public taxi stand, 2nd level,
don't get talked into a cab straight out of the airport door' ask someone where the public taxi stand is' its easy to find and you will see the line, ask a farang or a guard if you get confused they are ok'

Thanks , and when returning to airport 4 days later, early morning flight,

Should I get hotel to organise a cab for me, or will I pay top dollar ?

Or Should I go out on to the street and look for a meter cab?

i usualy walk to the nearest major road from the hotel, don't worry this won't be far in sukhimvit' maybe your hotel has a free tuk tuk service that will take you to the main road' flag down taxi meter' even if the road is quiet early in the morning you won't have to wait long' you will certainly pay more for ANY cab that hangs around the hotel. Always better to go to the nearest main road to get a taxi anytime.

don't beleave anyone at the hotel if they say to you it is a public holiday and there is no taxi that day. bangkok is 24/7 even on public holiday. they will get you one alright for a small fortune.

I forgot to mention that the public taxi line at the airport can be very long at times' but don't give in to the hawkers' they WILL try if you talk to them' the line moves very fast, you should not have to wait more than 15 mins.

you may get asked by the driver once you are on your way if you have been to Thailand before' just say yes, it may help avoid some scam' but all in all i find the drivers are friendly as any taxi anywhere' take the NUMBER PLATE is a good thing to do' just in case you leave something in the cab' the hotel can call the taxi company on your behalf.

have a great trip

I go to departures, get a meter taxi from there. No meter on, open door and get out. Even if he then says sorry and switches on its obvious he's trying to scam so if that doesnt work be sure he will try something else
