this scam has been running for at least 26 years, probably the kids of the original scammers are the ones doing it now!

Well, I'm a Thai and I've been to Siam Square station of the BTS quite many times.Never met this guy though. He's way too old to be a scout. I wonder if there's any real man-scout in my country.


Anyway, if anything like this happens on the BTS, you can ALWAYS ask them security guards for help. They're quite helpful when it comes to this kind of situations.

Always smile and never ask probing questions when dealing with these kinds of situations. The scout impersonator spat and swore at you because he probably felt you made him loose face. Thais are very nice warm people but they become very unpredictable when you cause them to loose face even when they are in the wrong.

Most Thai beggars found around skytrain stations and the entrances to shopping malls are controlled by the local mafia and pass on most of their earnings to the mafia. So next time you see a poor deformed malnourished beggar on the street buy him a can of beer or a pack of cigarettes but don't waste your time giving him money. Beggars will often approach you tin order to distract you whilst their buddy pick pockets you from behind.

Reporting him to police is useless! This is not USA or Britain! Reporting does nothing! Instead, you have to take matters into your own hands. You can do things in Thailand that you cannot do in your own country, legally. For example, if you think you are getting ripped off, yell at him real loud and spit in his face.

Most if not all beggars in Central Bangkok are not Thai at all but illegal aliens from Cambodia. They learn to speak Thai very well and an untrained foreigner cannot tell the difference. Tell him to go back to Cambodia. I tell them that and they understand! And they get offended so I know they really are from Cambodia! I say bad things about Pol Pot and how he fucked his daughters... those cambodian sheisters are speechless! hahaaaaa!!!

Find their weakness and exploit it. He is trying to cheat you out of your money, isn't he? He is purposely deceiving you, isn't he? So you have every right to fight back against those who will steal from you. You have to shut them up by hitting them where it hurts. Ask probing questions. Play the ugly belligerent American to him. Make him feel uncomfortable. Make him cry if you can. He's here to cheat you so attack him before he steals from you. You should spit on him first before he spits on you. This is how you play the game and win the game with these hucksters.

I once were scammed as well.

There was a that approached on the streets of Bangkok. It was a younger looking guy wearing a suit, looked cheap, but nevertheless a suit.

He said that he was trying to get home to his province wherever that was, but that he was left here without any money and that he needed to get back home. Then he started to sob and cry. Ok, by this time im thinking its a scam... But I still ask him how much it costs to get home for him and he looks up and asks me for 300 baht so he can get home to his family.

... I give the guy 20 baht and leave.

That guy is clearly not a 'boy' anything... but he does look familiar somehow, maybe I've seen him on Thai TV, in the evening... Son of someone famous, perhaps?

Thailand is a country of contrasts and contradictions. On the one hand, Buddhists are kind, generous, tolerant and forgiving - and on the other we (farang) are told not to help beggars because they are controlled by the mafia, that beggars deliberately deform their children, and give them pills to make them sleep sweetly all day. "The more we help beggars, the more of them there will be." Yes, indeed, poverty in Asia would disappear overnight if these beggars were out of sight.
And why is it OK to insult a Cambodian or Laotian, who cannot find other work here, whilst it is unthinkable to insult a Thai? A beggar is a beggar, surely? Is it OK to pay Burmese refugees 100B a day on luxury building projects in Chiang Mai, whilst the avaricious Thai tradesmen demand the outrageous sum of 138B/day?

Thais are big on the concept of "saving face".
If you spit on someone in public....they *will* snap. You could end up stabbed or punched.

Also don't expect sympathy from the BTS guards or tourist police when your spitting or shouting antics come to light.

I live in BKK for over two years now.

Follow Jo's advice and you WILL be beaten or stabbed, to reagin face. Also in a Thai vs Farang situation it is all Thailand vs Farang - even the police will get it on it as they can extract a bigger 'fine' from a foreigner.

Also as a side note our 'man-scout' is very thin, this often signifies Ya Ba (methamphetamine) abuse. Making a paranoid schizophrenic (meth side effects) totally wired Asian lose face in public is very dangerous all taxi drivers, tuk tuk driver (ie all hte low classes) will join in and believe me the security guards won't help

I saw this guy outside National Stadium Skytrain Stop. I told him I saw him on bangkokscams.com and took his photo. He ran away. He wasn't ready to fight me or take my camera. After that I saw him at Victory Monument later in the day. Professional scumbag. The second time I spoke to him in Thai and he didnt understand, he didn't understand my Thai friend either. This guy isn't Thai, but he is a scammer.

I had exactly the same scam pulled on me in India 20 years ago. India flag day as they called it. The book asked me to write my donation. I wrote "nothing, this is a con" they swore at me and walk away. As they did I thought of all the unimaginitive scams I had come across in Thailand and thought good of the Indian scammer. Now it's in Thailand too, a little late, but glad they've discovered it.

Agree with Mark - my first thought when I saw the photo was "this guy is on yaba". Once I read the report his behaviour backed up that theory.

Those who say to get aggressive with these scammers - did you ever wonder if that is what they want you to do? A cop or security guard sees you hit a beggar and $$$ signs start flashing in their eyes. A 100 baht scam quickly turns into a 100,000 baht scam if you are stupid.
