Colour Code for Scammers
Written by John

Did you know the colour of the shopping bags means different things while shopping in the market places.

This was revealed to us when we stayed in Bangkok doing allot of shopping in the market places and different outlets. by a friend who lives there.

This is a way of communicating between shop owners. to let them know this person was scammed and spent allot of money to tight ass will not spend money.

A Thai friend who works around the markets told me about this

he said always ask for a white plastic bag when buying goods. or have your own this is a neutral colour and has no meaning.

Black bag mean tight ass( not willing to spend big and will try to barging low)

White bag is neutral. (prefer colour when doing allot of shopping)

Yellow means you have Money and can be charged a Higher price.

Blue means you have Money and can be charged a Higher price.

Green means you have Allot of Money..

I thought this was very interesting to find out and started always asking for a white bag, I told them I know what the colours mean and they just laughed.

some actually admitted this is true and asked if I lived there. loll.

this didn't apply in Phuket just Bangkok.

This isn't exactly a scam, is it? More like "business".

I think it is a scam if you are being "marked" for being charged higher prices. I am not sure if this is true but I will look out for it the next time I go shopping at a tourist market.

If true, this is pretty cool since it's also a good indicator of whether you overpaid or got a good deal.

Asked the gf whose worked for a boutique in Siam Sq for years. She said any self respecting Thai who can afford her shops exorbitant prices wouldn't be seen dead with a plastic bag, either shop's labelled paper bags or their own bags. She reckons either for dumbo farangs in the Patpong night market or JJ if it's true.

I really don't this this is true... Really... is it that much of a big deal? take a chill pill! And people who go to Patpong should not! And people is this all u do with your life? And they are poor! You all have money what do they have? A hole family to feed with a little money that is what they have!

Just if it is true then do what you to do about it! But really its not that big a a deal! And whoever put this web site should be ashamed of them selfs!

Sarah! Why do you think foreigners should let people rip them off?! Criminals that continually commit fraud are not starving children! This site provides a useful service! Also exclamation marks are supposed to be used sparingly! Mushrooms are not good for your brain! OK!

Sarah you are so Naieve and should be banned fo travelin overseas. These people are not poor, and can easily afford food in Thailand. The prices you pay are not the same as the prices local pay. These scammers exploit children so people like you feel pity.

Sarah you are a donkey

i was told I would have the most fun if I bargained for my purchases because it should be good for me and good for them at the end. Whatever you've paid - both sides should leave happier for it. No - one likes to feel conned - If Thai people came to other countries and saw the prices people have to pay in their own cities they would realise that our governments con us everyday with taxes and duties. Everything I've ever paid for in Thailand - I've left all the happier with. thank You Thailand you've given me much joy. I've probably been ripped off - sure, but I'm still happier.

Interesting I usely got the black ones. Sometimes white. But cannot remember everything of course But its hard to believe. Their is simply to much competition on the market. They would, it seems to me only tip family or friends. Why others? I dont know. Maybe its true

I don't think you can call this a scam. It's just the shoppers way of informing each other about a potential customer. I put everything into my backpack when I go shopping.
Anyway, this also happens in Bali. You will be given different coloured bags when you shop, depending on your bargaining ability. So my backpack comes in handy. In any case, you don't have to buy if you don't like the price.

I will check the color of bags in the markets. Interesting. Think to be safe, I will just carry a bag of my own. Better yet, spend more time on the beach (if its not pouring rain)!
