Filipino scammers in Bangkok
Thursday, 13 August 2009

On the morning of July 7 I left my hotel in Sukhumvit Road to walk into central Bangkok. A young woman of perhaps 30 and a Filipino man of about 50 approached me in a friendly manner. Finding I was English, the man said that his sister was coming to London to work as a hospital nurse. As she was apprehensive about living in Britain, he asked if I would come to his home to reassure her. I said I would be happy to help as, by coincidence, my grandson was also a nurse in London.

He called a taxi and after 15 minutes we arrived at an attractive bungalow set in a garden. I accepted a soft drink and the sister came and sat beside me. I spoke to her about nursing in London and she listened politely.

Then the man asked me to come into another room, where he produced a pack of cards and said he would educate me in the secrets of card play.

By this time I seemed to be floating in a dreamlike place. I started giggling, which annoyed the man. He asked to see my wallet and roughly went through it. Other people came and went. We played cards but I had no idea what I was doing. He then took my camera and put it in a cupboard. I was incapable of saying or doing anything.

Finally, I was told to get into a taxi and taken to a modern shopping complex by the man and his "nurse" sister. I was told to hand my bank card to a shop assistant. I remember signing the till printouts and seeing the man and his sister head off with shopping bags. The taxi driver then took me back to my hotel.

It was not until I reached my room that my brain seemed to clear and the enormity of what I had done dawned on me. It was clear I had been drugged. I phoned my bank to cancel my debit card but three transactions totalling £2,550 had already been cleared and the money taken from my account.

The following morning the Filipino man rang my hotel room and made it clear that I should tell nobody. He said if I told the police then we would both go to a Thai jail (I had already informed the police and the British embassy). Fortunately, I did not hear from him again.

It was such a frightening experience that I want to warn other travellers to Bangkok. I will not be able to recover any of the £2,550 because I had voluntarily signed for the sums being taken from my account.

Didn't Bob's parents tell him not to go with strangers or accept treats from them? I wonder how the shop clerk could not have notice Bob's zombie-like state. That would have set of alarm bells immediately. There is no other evidence that the perps were indeed Filipinos other than Bob;s word. If Bob believes everything that he is told, the perps could have said they were from Mars on a shopping trip and he would have believed it.

I was approached by a Filipino male on Sukhumvit at the corner of Soi 8 recently who gave a similar story. He called a woman claiming her to be his sister that was going on her first trip to Hawaii and was apprehensive and needed assurance. I stopped in my tracks when he told me his sister was a taxi ride away. He stands about 5 feet 6 inches, weighs about 160 pounds, round face, approximate age in the 50's, dark complexion, can't remember marks or jewelry but he did have a flip cell phone. Both he and his "sister" speaks Tagalog fluently and definitely has the Filipino accent.

Yes you will be safe, just take sensible precautions, buy the lonely planet guide book, do not trust any strangers who approach you in the street, always get several quotes from different people if you buy anything. Dont wear jewellery or carry a lot of money in your handbag when walking on the street, dont use motobike taxis. Enjoy your stay and dont be too worried.

Paul Straton. You say you have been in Bangkok 3 years. have you How much time have you spent int the Philippines? Spend some time in the Philippines, and I think you might change your tune, saying that, Filipinos are not doing that. That is all I will say because I know that Filipinos are very warm and helpful people. I will say the same for Thai people. iI know that Thai people want to think that you enjoy being in their country, which they are very proud of. The realy want to see you happy and enjoy your stay there. They would like to think that visitors will want to return. Oh, I was married to wonderful Thai lady. We were together 34 years until she died of breast cancer 9 years ago. Thai culture, customs and traditons are nothing like you see potrayed by some news media, and many Europeans and westerners.

Hi Belle,

You will be safe in Bangkok. However you should try to be careful and alert to your surroundings. Keep in mind that, if it seem too good to be true, it probably is -- too good to be true. Make sure you select the place you want to go and see. Read literature before you arrived. Don't just follow the suggestions of guides, and especially that of strangers. Make sure you negotiate the price for transportation before you get in a taxi of tuk tuk. If you don't want to try going to the tourist attractions on your own, then do use an official tourist/travel agency. Then be careful that you don't go along with suggestion of tour guides that may accompany you. Many times, they will suggest other attractions that are not in the package. You will have to pay them for anythng extra, and probably much more than you should because the guide will get a commission from the the extra attraction they suggested. Do act friendly, yet try not to show that you are vulnerable. When making purchasing, I suggest you convert the baht price to your currency. That way you will understand what you are really paying for your purchases. Sometimes we tend to think that the Baht compared to our currency, is not much. When we stop and do the conversion when making a purchase, we find that often what seemed like a great bargan/buy, really isn't. If you stay in a hotel, make sure it is a reputable one, and get tips from the staff. They will gladly help you. Enjoy you stay in Thailand. I plan to stay there, starting November of this year. May God bless and keep you.

I was approached by a guy in Soi 4 outside a 7 eleven last December. Very plausible smartly dressed asked me if I was Irish (knew the accent). He told me his daughter was going nursing in Dublin and could I give her a few pointers about Dublin. At that stage I knew it was obviously a scam. I was going to Pattaya shortly after ( in about 30 minutes ) so I explained I was unable to offer any assistance. He thanked me and I returned to my hotel while he no doubt stayed in the area to try and hook a tourist.

I have read about this in other Asian countries where the modus operandi is to drug you take you to a hostpital and one of your organs is taken.

Have been appraoched for the same scam 3 seasons in a row in 2004/05. At Phrom Pong BTS outside the Emporium, a man claiming to be Malaysian ask me for a cigarette and then where I come from. After I told him I was from Ireland he told me that his sister was going nursing in Dublin and that she was nervous about going to a different country. Next we had an arrangement to meet at 10 the following morning after he tried very hard to get me to go there and then. Due to his over eagerness I spotted something wrong and found something else to do instead. I was however 60% sure he was genuine. The following season outside Starbucks at Siam Square (very near Siam Sq BTS) a man once again approached be for a light and once again he was Malay and after I revealed that I was from Ireland he too had a sister who was going nursing to Dublin and he was desperate to get me to his home to meet his sister. Once again an appointment was made for the next morning at 10, but unfortunatly I had a toothache and couldn't make it. The next time I was approached inside MBK by a very friendly man who was very interested to know where I was from. With my best Kerry accent (not from Kerry) I told him I was from Russia and true to God he had a sister going nursing to Moscow.

I have been approached by scam artists of various nationalities and or races. My advise is to restate what has already been posted, "if it looks to good to be true, IT IS". In addition please understand that Thai people and Asian people in general will rarely if ever approach an unknown foreigner for advise pertaining to a personal matter such as whether to live or work in another country. You are quite fortunate that you escaped with your life and only suffered the loss of money and perhaps the unpleasant effects of whatever drug they gave you. In the past, katoeys were known to annoint their modified breasts with a drug then induce a foreigner/sex customer to lick their breasts, thereby ingesting the drug; all too often the customer/john wound up in the hospital or worse and of course they were always robbed.

Maybe your body language is giving the wrong message? If you don't know about scams coming from Africa, then maybe you should ask and find out, your comments make me think you are naive. I'm sure Africans don't stand on the corner and stop every farang, as I am sure that not every African is a scam artist, just as not every Thai or Phillipino are scam artists. However Nana being one of the biggest and most popular red light areas in Bangkok, it is a common place for dodgy folks from all nationalities to hang out. My blog was about my personal experience. When they wanted to play the card game with me I became very, very uncomfortable. They soon gave up and put me into a taxi, but had the audacity to tell me about their "sick" mother who needed a blood transfusion.

When he offered me the soda it was closed. I see now they have gotten more clever.

Educate yourself online and with the guidebooks before you travel to any country, they all have dangerous scams and dangerous places. Basic common sense should be enough to save you any trouble but websites like this one, and Stickmans Bangkok blog are big helps. I buy, and read, a Lonely Planet guidebook before I travel out of the country. Sometimes I will go to a bookstore and read through the Rough Guide book and other books too. And the online world is full of stories about travelers that have been scammed so that you dont have to be. I have been to Thailand 5 times and 9 times to the Philippines, and have had no bad experiences. Either I am lucky or dont look gullible, I dont know which one.

I also met this guy and went with him in a taxi, he had the same story about the nurse. I did not go in the house and said i would speak to her in a restaurant, he got angry and jumped out of the taxi and left.

He showed me the phillipine passport and he had a huge scarve on his cheeck.

Around the MBK area are many people like him, they all approached me many times. Also a lady who approached me 2 years in row, she starts talking about your hair that she likes.

Too bad the thai police is so slow with this, i reported it many times on websites but nothing seems to be done. They even do it right in front of the police at national stadium . They are mostly from Malaysia or Phillipines and hang around there every day.

Many times I would be lost on those rotbussses in Bangkok and all the Thais would give me ugly looks when I would ask for directions in my broken Thai. It was always some nice African Student Lad in the back that would speak up and guide me on my way. The Africans in Thailand are all friendly dudes over there for the same thing as us and like speaking english to somebody. 95.% of the time it is some Thai that scams. 4% are Aussie Scammers and the other 1% is Everybody else. Not a Pinoy!! You ALWAYS have to ask up front how much somethign costs as far a restaurants, services, rides, manicures, etc. Only the cabbies in Jakarta are worse than the majority of Bangkok Cabbies that often speak no english or have ANY knowlege of directions. The cabbies have no choice other than to scam because they are all slaves to some Chino-Thai owned monopoly just like the cabbies worldwide. They usually break even on their overhead after the 6th hour of driving. In Thailand they probably break even after the 10 hour and this is why so many are yaba'd out.

Another variation of this scam is the blackjack scam, i think this guy might have been drugged before he even started playing blackjack? or maybe he was scammed into playing blackjack and lost a lot of money and made up the being drugged part. oh well, the most common version is being lured into playing blackjack and loosing insane amounts of money.

I too was drugged and robbed of the money i had whilst in BKK. It makes me sick after reading some of the replies on this thread. ie, didnt your parents tell you- dont go with strangers- dont talk to strangers, etc etc. I had the same crap dealt out to me when i published my story on the Paknam web forum.

Some people have instincts bult into them and are cautious at all times. Others are more relexed and have trust and faith in humanity, to do the right thing.

The last thing that a person that has been taken advantage of wants to hear is someone saying, "your mom told you this and your mom told you that".

Remember the victum. He is the one that has had his/her holiday spoilt by the scum that preys on the inocent. As i said to the back stabing comments that came back when i posted my story, "wait till it happens to you, then we will see whos laughing".

I'll be visiting Bangkok on Aug for the first time, for 4 days with my sister and younger brother. We're Filipino. I've been trying to get hold as mush information as I can on stuff to do, places to see and how to get there. I've read hundreds of reviews already until I got to this site.

I believe that there will always be scammers in any part of the world, in any country. It's just a matter of handling yourself and taking extra precautions. And always remember never go with strangers or take anything from them. People will always think that tourists are naive because they truly are in a foreign country. They are the ones' who are easy to fool because they are unaware or unfamiliar with the place. Lets just say foreigners has the highest percentage of getting scammed than the natives. Filipinos gets scammed by their own too, but not as much as foreigners do in our country. Some people may be genuinely polite and some could just be taking advantage of the situation. General rule my parents thought us "Don't go or take anything given to you by a stanger", "always be alert and have a tint of doubt if the offer is just too good to be true",and "you can always say no".

And for my own rule...always have a buddy with you when traveling. :)

And just to add, the biggest part of the Filipino population are friendly, nice and caring.

I had a similar experience, I got talking to a charming couple of bangkonions who said their sister was going to work in Manchester as a nurse dida dida dida...Then they invited me to their home not far away, actually i was sitting outside the Indra Regent hotel in a coffee shop when I met them, the home was a friendly place. I met a women there, she was about 40 years old and her English was excellent, and she cooked me a simple but very pleasant meal. After we sat down in the living room and the young gentleman who brought me to this delightful place said his UNCLE was coming over he wanted to meet me......5 minuets later in walks MR SLICK....who was a charming man, looked a bit like a character from grand theft auto, vice city. He seemed OK we got chatting and he said he worked at the casino in Kuala lumpa.
I think he was trying to sell me a trip to the casino in the malaysian capital or something. I gave him a story about my grandfather, who lost our family fortune by gambling it all away, and I explained that I would never go to a casino or would have anything to do with gambling so he was basically trying to sell me a dead horse, anyway I had no money on me at all it was my first day in the capital so i thought it would be better to walk about with no money on me while I got a feel for the place...Anyway gutting a long story short I ended up being escorted back to my hotel by MR SLICK and the couple I met, who paid for the taxi by the way. I think I must have had a guardian angel or something because later that day i met an Australian fellow who had had the same experience only he had to fight his way out of this house he was a massive guy who worked as a body guard back in australia.

I have been in Bangkok about 5 times and have had only one experience that may be worthwhile to share. If you are ever in the Nana area there is an Arab district along Nana Nua Road. I highly recommend being careful not to venture off of the main roads. I attempted to cut through a side street looking for Bamrungrad Hospital, only to run into a small gang of 5 Africans who informed me that "whites" were not allowed on that particular street. I am a fairly large man and I can take care of myself and I am sure that they realized that I would not be an easy victim, but someone else may find themselves in a real tussle, especially after hours. I calmly apologized for not realizing this and turned around left, all the while making sure to be assertive, but respectful.

After hearing all of these stories it all makes perfect sense to me. I love Thai people and I think that it is true that Thailand is the "Land of Smiles," but this lulls many travelers into a false sense of security and makes for an atmosphere ripe for scammers.

Safe travels!

To Everyone:
NEVER admit it is your first time visiting Thailand. That will slow down most of the scammers.

In 2006 I was approached by a Fillipino and her brother. They asked me where I was from (California) and said they had a sister going to be a nurse at a hospital in California. They asked which city I lived in. I named the city next to mine which does not have a hospital. "Yeah, yeah, that's where she is going." Come on along and meet her. She's real close to here. I politely and firmly told them I had another commitment. I can't believe this is a standard line.

While in New York I was approached by a scammer. I told him I just got robbed and asked him for money to get home. He left quickly.

BTW I thin Thailand is a lovely country and I am going back to see more of it. I'm American so it is easy to spot me as a foreigner. I think foreigners attract scammers like lights attract moths. Almost all cab & tuk tuk drivers want to take you shopping. Then their are the shills that hang around tourist attractions and recommend "a great place" to buy jewelry. The end of every tour I took was at the Gem Gallery which is also over priced. Cabs get 5 liters of gas for every tourist they can bring there.

Remember NEVER ADMIT IT IS YOUR FIRST TIME TO THAILAND.

Im a filipino...and by nature most filipinos are considered shy specially if they live in another country. No filipino would dare approach a foreigner. So if a filipino approaches you be on your guard. It is better to just politely say no or just say "sorry i dont talk to strangers." If they keep on nagging you or following you then you know they're trying to scam you. Most filipinos are friendly only in their home country. The drug used would likely be Ativan...which some criminal elements here in manila love to use on unsuspecting foreigners.

People can only blame themselves if doing so. I've been in different parts of Thailand 8 times, and never had any problems there. Use common sense (if you have it) and you will be good. He said he was an engineer and looked believeable. I agreed to meet him the next day to talk to the sister. We get in a cab and go to a house in a residential area of Bangkok. There is a Philipino guy there. He says the women had just gone shopping have a seat and relax for awhile. The Philipino is a tall, slim middle aged guy with a sharp mind. He starts talking about playing cards. Then he gives me a pitch. He wants me to get involved with some scheme to cheat at a Cambodian casino. I repeatedly tell him no. First off, I wouldn't do that even if it was a sure thing as I'm an honest person and do not engage in criminal activity. Even if I was inclined to get involved it was clear that they would be holding all the cards and you would be in a very vulnerable position. Real simple. Understand that Thai people do not just walk up to you and start a converstaion on the street. Any Asian person who does so is up to no good. Be hard ......be cruel if need be and just ignore them.....like they do not exist...do not say anything to them..just ignore them and keep on walking....dont smile at them ..do not acknowledge them or make eye contact with them.
If you know what to look for you can spot them on the street along with the Indians that try to stop you while saying: "You are a lucky man / woman ...do you know why sir / mam ".
Same thing...dont even acknowledge them.
I have lived in Bangkok for 25 years now. In some ways I have become indifferent to all that goes on around me.
I do not acknowledge them but watch out for them.
Also do not fall for the surveys conducted by Thai Girls and Boys and sometimes the Boy scouts and Girl scouts.....they will just piss you off also if you actually fall for thier scams.
Again ..do not stop to talk to Asian people on the street...they are up to no good if they want talk to you.
Run Forrest Run
But you know what...it could be worse and I have heard tales of travelers (in other countries ) being outright accosted and threatened with thier lives.Thailand is tricky...but not dangerous per say for 99.9 percent of the people that come to Thailand.

My wife is filipino and previously had a friend, Ruby, whose family make their living in Thailand doing this. They don't drug their victims (we dont think), but they do a rigged, 'friendly' card game. They have connections with Thai police, due to the father being married to a Thai lady, and have got pretty rich doing it.

(Needless to say, my wife cut ties when she realised what they were up to)

It is so sad for the fact that I am a filipino and a nurse for real. I just learned that they have been using the profession as their alibi. Such a sad fact because yesterday my bag was snatched while I was waiting for a cab right outside tesco lotus. In it are my passport, atm, credit card, cash and my professional nurse ID. I just hope they won't be using my ID to scam people off. Now this is making me more worried. SIGH..

There is a gang called Budol-Budol Gang in the Philippines who victimizes people with the use of hypnotism. So whenever there is a stranger tryin' to talk to you and ask for help about something, never look straight into their eyes. If you think that he/she acts suspicious to you, just ignore that stranger and walk away. Otherwise, you will be under their spell.

The fellows eyes darting around and looking over my shoulder to most likely an accomplice was the dead give away. This time it was a sister going to melbourne, and he even named the hospital. I went to Singapore with my female friend, We were sitting in the Bus Station front of Takashimaya around 8 PM. Suddenly an Indian guy approached us and He introduced his self that he is working in IT and a writer too. I still remember his appearances A curly hair, fat, using glass, around 170-175cm, big belly, whitey around 30-34 years old. He recommended us to visit "World Mall" in Singapore and he asked me to come to the mall with him by bus and he is very anxious go with us. That was strange!! Of course I rejected his invitation. Just be careful gals.

The title " Filipino Scammers in Bangkok" is a slanderous statement! I understand the bitter feeling of the writer as it is not easy to be scammed by strangers. But I think, using the name of my nationality to warn the tourists in BKK about the scam is simply a sign of bias judgment and racism. I'm a Filipino woman, living and working as an English teacher (and planning to volunteer to teach the Cambodian streetkids in Ban Laem soon) among with those thousand English teacher around Thailand. I am aware that there are some Filipino scammers scattering anywhere as there are wholesome Filipino workers too who are working very hard so to earn decently in Thailand and around the world!

I agree with one of the comments. Just because someone says to you he's this or that nationality doesn't mean he/she is. Nowadays, one can claim or pretend to be anyone especially those out to make a "lving" off the credulity or naivete of another. And how old was our "victim" in this story, anyway? 5? 6? 7 years old? We are never told, but my guess is that he's fairly advanced in age. Probably past his 50s or even 60s or even 70s, which makes me wonder how he could have allowed himself to be tricked into this supposed scam despite the "wisdom" he must have accumulate over the years. My bet is that he willingly went with the duo because something deep down his pants was telling him "I'm feeling lucky today." In other words, our victim's friend's brain was addled not by the alleged drug put into his drink by the male companion, but by the overpoweing thought that he was going to score this "young woman" for a few minutes of "conselling" on working as a nurse in London. Lesson of the story: when something looks too good to be true, it is!

Wow, I tried to google this scam, now only year after this same thing happened to me.

It was February in 2008 and I was approached by a middle-aged guy in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The same story, he has a daughter who is coming to work in Helsinki. She has received some mail but it is all written in Finnish, so if I could meet them and translate it to english.
This was already very alarming to me, but as a curious nature, I kept going on.

He also asked me punch of questions (in a clever way, of course) to find out more about me. I was a perfect target, a blond 24-year woman traveling alone, new in a town.
So he suggested to meet me the next day with his daughter in a restaurant to have a lunch and chat.

When I got to meet him next day, he is there alone, saying that his daughter had to stay to do some overtime in a local hospital. His wife with heart problems has been in a hospital for a long time, and is now feeling worse. Daughter had to stay there.
He offers me a nice lunch, is very friendly and insists of paying it.

We meet the next day again. This time he has his two innocent looking daughters with him, other one being the nurse. We took the tuk-tuk to some motel, where his wife should of been as in his words she was discharged from the hospital.

So we walk into nice motel. In a room there is his "uncle" and wife of the uncle. His own wife is still in the hospital, they say, but should be coming back soon.

In this while, of course, uncle says he is a dealer on a casino and starts teaching me how to cheat on game etc..I am not interested and just follow reluctantly. You all know this part.
I am not interested, he mentions about his client, lady from Brunei who owes him so money and that he is a bit pissed off as he has not get his part yet.

Amazingly, there is a knock in the door a little bit later, and here she comes in. They start playing, and I refuse. So it is the the guy I met on the street against madame Brunei.
It was rather hilarous how this hotel owner lady was admiring my "silver earring" or "Calvin Klein" copy shirt as if they were real. They really thought I am an idiot and naive.

It is time for the last game, and I am drawn into the game. I start sweating but keep it cool. THe lady puts the money on the table. She wants to see our money too(sometime ago I was introduced her as a girlfriend of the guy...). I said I have no money so the dealer-uncle promises to back me off and gives 5 000$. Now the uncle asks if he can talk with me in a private. Madame nods and so we go in the bathroom!

He is all being very excited and says we are going to win and I have to loan money from my family etc.. I am playing along and just say that yes I will do that. I am worried about my security at that point.

We go back and cards are put into envelopes for the while "I would get money from the am" and the game is to be put on hold. My "boyfriend" is leaving with me. I have no idea if they are dangerous, so I kept playing stupid. I knew I had hardly any money on my credit card. So in a bank I asked them to withdraw me a ridiculous amount of money, which I knew was not possible to withdraw.
And when it did not work, I was playing stupid, that there must of been a mistake.

The guy was getting bored and frustrated now, and he asked me to work on this project but he had to go. He asked me to go on with finding money and gave me a phone number to call as soon as I had the money.

Of course I went back to my hotel and left right away.

-------------------------

And I agree with anyone here, they are psychologically very very intelligent and in my case in a way very good actors too. They talk to you, they are nice and they dress well so you would think they are rich already.

Jsut warning to anyone here, remember these people might be dangerous too. It is not always a good idea try to walk away. At least you should have any excuse. Play stupid. They talked to you in first place as they thought you are a good target.

And another reminder; never, ever hnad money to anyone you really dont know personally well.
Scam happens usually fast too. There is someone sick/dying/innocent and they need help. Something has to be done fast and they are helpless to do anything without 100/1000/etc$ of help.

It is the catch, they look rich, they meet you in a secure place (town halls, public place etc).

And PLEASE, remeber that any phone call can be recorded too. Especially if you are on the business trip etc and are using the landlines. Someone might be listening your phonecalls and take advantage of ANY situation.

Warning about a possible scam at one of the street bars about half way between Phrop Phong and Asok BTS stations on Sukhumvit. Left Dubliner pub one Friday night heading towards Asok and as I was passing street bar two very pretty ladies invited me to sit and have a drink. It turned out that the older one - would guess in her late thirties - ran the bar and the younger very pretty girl worked there. Obviously bought them both a drink took my wallet out, paid the bill and left. Exactly same thing the following week, except the bar owner warned me never to take my wallet out in the street and that I should never carry a wallet anyway. I thought what a nice helpful lady. The next week same thing, left the Dubliner and stopped for a drink (without my wallet) with my friendly female bar buddies. I took about 2500BHT out that night and must have had about 7 beers in the pub which meant I had about 1600BHT in assorted notes in my back pocket. This time when it was time to leave paid the bill which left me with about 1200BHT which I proceeded to put in my back pocket. Bar owner said you have had a couple of drinks you need to be careful of ladyboys on your way as one will grab you and the other go through your pockets - best leave money with me and come back tomorrow, she gave me her phone number and told me to call her when I got back to appartment to let her know I got home OK - which I did. Mistake - she now had my number in phone memory. She called me a few times the following day and said she was very upset and wanted to see me that night - I thought OK will also pick up my change from previous night at same time. When I got to bar she seemed a bit 'distant' but I still ordered her and her pretty young friend a drink. After a good 30 minutes she came up beside me took my hand and put it on her leg and whispered that she was in big trouble with member of her family and needed 80,000BHT to pay to lawyer the following day, she had 30,000 but could I 'lend' her the other 50,000Bht which I could get from ATM over the road. Said I never carry bank card and didnt think I could draw that much anyway but I would check with the bank following day and call her. I offered to pay the bill assuming she would take it from the money I left with her the previous night - no such thing - had to pay another 600 for drinks. It was at that point I started to small a rat. Hadnt been back in appartment 5 minutes before phone rang, darling this, darling that - I finish at 5 am can I come see you at your appartment. Said I was in bed and would speak next day. Early am phone rings again about bank etc, said I would check and get back to her. All morning phone kept ringing - in end I told her could not draw that amount and could not help her - sorry. Not heard from her since!!!! I think it was an elaborate con trick - had she given me the change that night - I would have handed over the 50,000BHT without second thought. I was lucky. Tommy, Bangkok.

We just came back from Bangkok, had the time of our lives and stayed out of trouble. We where three men from Australia in our 20s and it's not hard to read these people. When ur in Thailand it's easy just think that everyone there is out to get ur money, so use that to ur advantage. It's a very nice place but don't leave ur brain at home, don't go to any known scamming places, stay in public crowded places and don't accept anything from anyone you don't know. These rules are for any foreign country, ur a tourist in a poor country, did u really not expect to be scammed once or twice? It's stupid people that don't have common sense that end up in bad places.. and if u ask me I believe that u deserve it for not being more careful with ur hard earned money and personal safety. Next time be a smart traveller!

It seems like 'what's old is new again'. I spent a year in the Philippines in 1980 and the scam described here was common there even then, over 30 years ago.

Am I the only one in this forum old enough to remember Charles Sonhraj? He was drugging, robbing, raping, and murdering foreign tourists here in Bangkok when I arrived here three decades ago!

Never accept a drink or food from a stranger you just met. In a bar or club I won't even leave an open bottle of beer unattended if I have to go relieve myself! Am I paranoid? Maybe. But I've never been drugged and I've meet a few people who have.
