Floating Market Scam
Monday, 19 November 2007

I am not sure if you want to categorize it as a scam but it's more of annoyance that travellers should be aware of.

We arrived at Saphan Taksin BTS station around 5.00 PM. River taxi was already closed so we took river trip by private boat. Floating market was already closed but boat guy didn't tell us. Still it was nice ride. On the way he stopped the boat and an old lady in a small boat, chanting "floating market floating market" approached our boat. Since she was old, I thought we should give her some business. I asked her how much is Singha beer, without answering my question she opened beer and asked for 150 baht. I think that's way too much for a bottle of Singha. Since she had opened beer, I couldn't refuse. She asked me if I want to buy beer for boat man, which I refused. But another passenger agreed to buy beer for driver. Driver took beer but didn't drink.

Our co-passenger who can understand little bit of Thai, told us as before we departed, driver was talking to someone on cellphone and said we are on the way or something to that affect. So we think boat lady was known to driver.

The same thing happend to us except that the Singha beer was 200 baht and a Coca Cola for the boatman cost the same. We knew we were paying way over the odds for the drinks but we didn't mind giving the old lady a bit of business.
