Floating Market Scam
Monday, 19 November 2007

I am not sure if you want to categorize it as a scam but it's more of annoyance that travellers should be aware of.

We arrived at Saphan Taksin BTS station around 5.00 PM. River taxi was already closed so we took river trip by private boat. Floating market was already closed but boat guy didn't tell us. Still it was nice ride. On the way he stopped the boat and an old lady in a small boat, chanting "floating market floating market" approached our boat. Since she was old, I thought we should give her some business. I asked her how much is Singha beer, without answering my question she opened beer and asked for 150 baht. I think that's way too much for a bottle of Singha. Since she had opened beer, I couldn't refuse. She asked me if I want to buy beer for boat man, which I refused. But another passenger agreed to buy beer for driver. Driver took beer but didn't drink.

Our co-passenger who can understand little bit of Thai, told us as before we departed, driver was talking to someone on cellphone and said we are on the way or something to that affect. So we think boat lady was known to driver.

The same thing happend to us except that the Singha beer was 200 baht and a Coca Cola for the boatman cost the same. We knew we were paying way over the odds for the drinks but we didn't mind giving the old lady a bit of business.

written by Avoid Damnoen Saduak Floating Market Scam, Thu 16 Jun 2011 06:18:56 CDT
My wife and I rented a private taxi to go to the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market from downtown Bangkok. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a woman in the parking lot. We didn't know who she was but she demanded that we purchase tickets for a boat ride to tour the Floating Market and the price was 2500 Thai Bahts for both. We asked for more information and she told us that the boat ride was the only way to tour the floating market and the boat ride will be about 60 to 90 minutes long. We originally planned to enjoy the float market for the whole day so when we were told that the tour was only 60 to 90 minutes long we were reluctant to go in. That was when this woman corralled us into a corner of the parking lot and told us that we must stay there until we decided to pay 2500 Bahts. She then showed us an official letter, in English, from some Thai government agency indicating that the boat ride was the only way to tour the floating market and the price was 1500 Bahts per person. There was no signature at the bottom of the letter. It was an obvious scam. But what was more troubling was the way we were treated by this woman. She was rude and harassing us the whole time we were there. We were treated like criminals instead of tourists. Her behavior was completely opposite to that of other Thai people we've met. She said she only charge us 2500 instead of 3000 Bahts therefore giving us a discount of 500. We finally paid the 2500 Bahts for the boat ride which we know at that time was excessively expensive. The boat ride was over in only about 60 minutes and we were greeted by the same woman again at the parking lot. She told us to leave the place immediately otherwise we must pay the parking fee of 1500 Bahts for our taxi, which was waiting there. Needless to say, we felt very insulted by this woman.

Ed, I think you were ripped off since you first stepped on that taxi. There are lots of parking lots in Damnoen Saduak. There's no reason at all why your taxi had to park at the parking lot where that woman was.

Also, you can just WALK around the market if you don't want to take any boat rides. Or you can find the official boat ride that's located in the market for 600 baht for a motor boat(per 8 persons not just one person) or 400 baht for a traditional boat. The parking fee in Damnoen Saduak shouldn't be more than 20-30 baht/hour. There's no admission fee to the market either.

Here's the information link in Thai but you can always use google translate. http://www.amphawatoday.com/t39Damnoen_Saduak_floating_market.htm
