Haircutting Scams
Tuesday, 08 July 2008
2 weeks ago I was roaming around MBK when a folder of a hairdresser called 'Neo, Neo, Neo' (If i remember correctly) was put in my hands.

Since I needed a cut and the folder said it's 280 Baht for a cut and wash, I though what the hell.

When I walked in everything went so fast. After the 1 minute wash and 2 minutes into the cut they asked if I needed Vitamins for my hair.

I said 'no thank you'. A little bit later she came by with some product which she put on my hair because 'I needed it'.

Seconds after, while having my hair cut I got the ticket for 580 Baht. Apparently she put the Vitamin product on, even though I declined.

Since I addressed them in English they had no idea I could speak Thai. And let me tell you, they insult you while you are being cut and robbed.

My GF witnessed how one woman tried to get up several times but was just pushed down in her seat.

So be warned when you cut your hair at this place...

Shop started trying to hit me for 800Baht and 500 baht.. i had agreed on another place 200 baht wash and cut they attempted to shave it and the girl dooing it was hopless missed bits everywhere and it was horrible in the end i slipped one of the barbers 100 Baht and shaved my head myself. saved myself so much time. they did also try and sell me minerals and nutriens for my hair but my hairs already dead..lol....

Go to The outer suburbs of bangkok its only 50 to 60 baht for a mens hair cut.

Pak Kret near the bus terminal, Mahachai Mai (Rama 2 km 21) Bang Son (Krung Thep Nonthaburi soi 32. These all over clean and very cheap hair cuts. If you have thai friends or speak thai its worth the bus ride out there.

I went for a haircut/colour/treatment in MBK with my friend during my previous trip, 2nd or 3rd level of MBK, that salon is good and highly recommended, next to another salon though. next to escalator. A not-so-class salon as compared to the one on the ground floor but their service is good.

Btw, which level is this Neo Neo Neo situated?

A tip for those needing a good haircutin Bangkok: Call the Marriott Sukkumvit spa and make a reservation with the male haircutter. He does a great job, for less than 900 baht with service and vat you will get a pro haircut, no pressure to buy products(once he actually told me to buy Nioxin somewhere else as their markup was so huge!) He has cut my hair for nearly two years and also my wife, always does a great job and speaks fluent english.

Thaitransit is right. Get the subway out to Rama 4 road or Huay Khwang or Sutthisan plenty of barbershops around there. 60 baht for a men's haircut. Or try the barbers in the subway or skytrain stations, QB House I think they are called 100 baht for a haircut.

One salon iI use in Sukhumvit 22 queens park plaza does great gents hairdressing, manicure , pedicure, ear clean, back shave with clippers at around 100 / 150 baht per service required. Always find myself going back there, been to a few others mbk, central world but much more expensive and trying to sell you overpriced styling that would last only a couple of days anyway.

The independant places by and large are quite good but better to stick to the tourist orientated areas as theyre used to dealing with foreign customers hair, you take a chance with the off piste places and you could be scalped in the process ,all in aid of saving 50 baht.

HAHAHA I have been to that NEO shop a few rtimes actually, they are the most unfriendly and annoying hairdressers ever- they will ask you twenty times if you want 'treatment' or 'vitamins' if you still say no they will pay you back- their way (ripping your hair, insulting you etc, giving you a shitty cut) it's on the 3rd floor, a corner shop near the Burger King entrance.

MBK is the shopping center version of Suvarnhabumi. Most of the stuff they sell is available (with warranty) from stores like Paragon and Central at the same price or less, eg. mobile phones, electronics, cosmetics. I don't understand why anybody goes there. A real Thai harcut is a great bargain. It should cost between 80-120 baht for a man, including washing and conditioner.

I also went to the Neo Neo Neo Hairsalon at MBK on Sep 9th 2009. I had a middle age (late 30 or 40 ) hairdressor who has long straight hair. She seems very nice in the beginning and in the middle of cutting my hair, she wanted me to have vitamin for my hair. I planned to go beach following morning. so I told her that I will do it next time. she insisted and called her boss who can speak better in english and tried to sell the product again. Her boss was saying that I had to have vitamin treatment because I am going to beach. So I asked how much is it. As I remember it was about 580bht extra some other stuff. all together she said that 700bht more. I told them not to do it.. after I said that, boss left and hair dressor started to cut my hair agian with shitted face. I was very nervous. the way she was cutting, she is about to kill me. I regretted that I should just add these vitamin stuff.. anyway, my hair was ok. but after the haircut, she didn't want to clean my hair on my neck or face.. what a terrible service.

JUST HAD THE SAME SCAM RUN ON ME.
B285 haircut and shampoo listed on teh wall turned into B1500 after they put some "treatment" on my hair.
BEWARE

I usually went there because it is convenient for shopping and have had great haircuts there in the early 2000's when I had previously visited. They used to have fantasticly cute girls, pedicures for only B150 more beyond the haircut and great customer service as they spent a lot of time on you.

Now things have changed
The stylist was a guy, slick and crafty, couldn't speed me out of teh chair fast enough and teh kicker is that the haircut was below average.

Usually get a haircut in Central Bangna. B200 and a really good job. Wash, cut and blow dry. I did find an old Thai bloke in Huamark who did it for B60 [no wash but I can do that] but he passed away some months ago. I reckon those little shops out in the suburbs are the place to go.
