Indian Holy man
Wednesday, 21 January 2009

I have read about this man here once' but not in its own thread so here goes.

Today walking my way back from the dentist just about near the food market on the junction of Asoke and Sukimvit roads when i was aproached by an Indian Man in a nice suit and turbon claiming to be a 'Holy Man'

The trick is very clever and involves the old magic of hand faster than the eye some veryfast talking (psycology) and a Wallet style note pad that he uses as a prop'

First he tells you how lucky you are as he writes something down on a scrap of paper and scrunches it into a ball and makes you hold onto it and then put it inside his Wallet style folding notepad and take it out again and put it back again all inbetween some fast talking. He then takes his business card out of his foldup notepad and gives that to you to read' some usless info about his skill. While you look at that he explains that he is a Holy Man and gives all money he gets to needy people.

Then a barrage of questions for you to answer' a bit like numerology. He gives you a scrap of paper to write down your answers without showing or telling him' here's the prop, he draws a circle on a piece of paper inside the notepad and asks you to put your paper on that before you write your answers, of course he cannot see. There are thin loose pieces of paper inside the folder. Then at the end of all this he takes out the scrunched up paper from the note pad that he wrote on in the beginning that you held for a while at the start' and of course it has the same answers on it as if he read your mind before he even met you.

He then writes down a choice of donation for you to give to him and to bring you luck blah blah. All i will say is that the lowest choice he gives you is 2000bht. I believe he has several tricks as he was trying to pull another one to prove himself but after i started questioning him the trick was not work (only works if you play by his rules) so he gave up on me' tryed to make me feel quilty and went on his way. (one last try to get some cash)

He is very good and you will think you have seen a miracle' yes he is that good but SADLY FOR HIM he did not get any of my money nor answer my questions about his 'Special ability'

Anyway his secret is carbon paper and the delivery of the trick (prop and fast talking) to fool you into thinking he has real ability.

If you see him just enjoy the trick and wish him luck' it took me hours to figure it out as it really does seem like he read your mind', that part is very clever and i did not see him read any paper, well at least he made me think i didn't.

none of these explenations for how this "trick" is done are clear enough or explain the the experience that I had. I had ther piece of paper in my hand and when I opened it what he said he would tell me about was there.
1) How did he replace what was tightly held in my hand?
2) how did he tell me things about myself , and my fa,ily that I did not reveal to him?

It does indeed leave one with a strange feeling! I admit I was scammed. I would like to "get over the feeling that I was scammed by resorting to the beleif that it was just a trick.

This is common in Pattaya and Phuket also, the indian guys will approasch you on the street os in the malls usually with the opening line, you are a lucky man, you want to know why.

I even know one of these guys, he used to sell suits in Pattaya, now he does the trick in Phuket.

I experienced the same kind of thing today (2 hours ago) on Khao San Road, and my questions are the same as Gregory O's:
- I also held the piece of paper tightly in my hand
- the writing on his paper was not exactly the same (for instance, on his paper, my birth date was in letters - NOV -, on mine, in numbers - 11 -), so it couldn't be carbon paper for instance.
So, what's the trick???

One guy tried this on me as Traveller detailed, on lower Sukhumvit around the Nana BTS station on the Sois on the 'odd' side of Sukhumvit Road. He told me I look lucky then all of a sudden I got passed to his scamming partner in crime. The showed me my favorite color 'blue' which a lot of men like anyways, then some other stuff then asked for a donation, he got way upset when I gave him 10 baht and I laughed. He asked me if I was joking, I said no he approached me, not the other way around.

Guess that was what the dirty looking Indian guy who approached me and my friends in Patong was trying to do.

He went on about how he was a well respected holy man in India which surely explains why he's walking around a Thai red light district.

I ingored him but he stood around giving me a strong stare. I told him I wasn't interested in anything he had to say and he told me "You have a funny face". I wanted to hold up a mirror as he looked quite dirty with a huge beard.

I noticed he had a young boy in his early teens with him dressed in a dress shirt and black slacks. The boy said nothing and seemed to look away the whole time. Not sure what that was all about.

Tall Indian guy with white shirt and black pants... about 25 years old said his name was John Singh just did that to me on Sukhumvit near Emporium (I think he had a Hindu symbol tattooed on his right hand).... did everything that was written here "He told me I looked lucky and wrote things on a piece of paper... which I held tightly in my hand and maybe I'm the psychic because I guessed what he probably guessed what I would guess????? He stated I had no sickness in my life which I haven't .... yet.... ... but he also said I had two kids... a girl and a boy. Which I do... and how did he know that? I am rarely seen with them especially shopping because they stay home with the nanny. Guy gave me two phone numbers too... I knew it was a scam, because he was with a darker Indian guy who had left.... but he left a really wierd feeling after he mentioned my kids. I'm with Gregory O's ... I hope it was a scam. I told him if he just wanted to scam me for money...tell me.. but don't talk about my kids.

Well even though I think the people you find in Thailand and other countries are scammers, I can very well tell you that there are some very powerful people in India.
Don't expect to find them road side though, most probably they would be millionaires and booked all the time.

I once met someone who verbally gave me the whole map of my house with even small details like what painting I have on the left corner in my bedroom, and much more.
Without even knowing my name he talked to me about my relatives and who needed help, who may not be good for me etc.
Plus he mentioned that how I make my living (i.e. what my business is). Which was also 100% correct.

I would also recommend to not to fall in for these scams in Thailand and other countries but don't also think that this is all fake and impossible.
If you find the right person in India then believe me you are in for a shock!

Wow... I thought I was the only one this happened to. This happened to me today and I have to say it was weird... Indian Guy approaches me and says I " have a lucky forehead" says a few words.. rights something on a post-it.. crunches it and tells he to hold it.. and then goes on to say things about my past, and future... He guessed some things dead on.. I was still suspicious.. and then he asked he a number between 1-5.. I pick 3.. and then he asked me a color... any color except black or white...I pick "blue"" he goes on and says how lucky 3 and blue are and then he tells me to read what he wrote on the post- it... Wow it was 3 and blue.. Freaked me out.. he asked for a donation but I did not have any money on me.. I would have gave him 20 if I would have had it... I know it is a trick .. but how did he do it.. paper never left my had... I have been thinking all day about this...

Hi guys

After reading your comments, I'm convinced too that this man is Thailand version of David Baine.

I was at Emporium taking pictures and he made a comment about my past which was kinda true. From there, I was sucked into wanting to find out more. Guess such things are too good to be true. Anyway I invited him for coffee to find out more. Yup he did those small paper tricks which was amazing, tear the paper into 4 equal sections, roll them and hand them in your hand and when if the paper becomes one then he promised to reveal more about your future. His another trick is the guessing 1 - 5 number and choosing a color which cannot be black, white and orange. When I said ORANGE, he said that color was forbidded. Then I knew something is not right. Later he asked for donation to his master by showing a photo of his master and his many followers. From then on, I was starting for show less interest becoz money is being involved. So I said I have a plane to catch and thanked him for his advice.

I even have a photo of him.

If anything amiss, I'll have evidence in hand and details relating to the above.

Take care guys!

God bless!

Rgds,
Singapore Guy

This guy got me in 2003. He had a young lad working as a spotter down the khao san rd, he chatted
to me then persuaded me to let him read my future down an alley, I followed! Anyway, he asked me
to relax and asked me a question that I could'nt fathom, then while I was confused he asked me to
Put a 'lucky' charm against my forehead, and then asked questions etc, anyway, what he did was
Hypnotise me and whilst I was under he asked about my family, life etc and wrote it all down,
then brought me out of hypnosis and 'revealed' all this info, then charged, bank card was missing

this thing happened to me in Toronto just the other day. freaking right beside a RCMP outpost, as i was getting some Timmies coffee he started out saying ''you have a lucky face'' and he had a crazy stare that looked really mezmorizing ...he some how put me in a trance, and forced me to give him money twice....first series of questions asking to choose a flower, come on people it is always a rose, the asked to say a number between 1-5, again it's alway a freaking 3, they were both written on a piece of paper, he also had me holding another piece of paper crumpled in my hand along with an item(pretty sure to keep my hand from closing too tighly) then he opened his wallet with papers, i saw some cash US$20, and a photo with a bunch of people, he said it was of his master and some other people and pointed at a person saying it was himself. after told me to open the paper in my hand it had rose and the number 3 on there...and then asked for a donation....i was like wtf, but i could not control my hand and i pulled out a $20 and put it in....i tried walking away afterward but there was some crazy mind control he had on me. the second series of questions were of personal family matter stuff, and of course i reveal a bleak description as possible, but anyways for one of the questions he had to scribble out something and again told me to look at the picture in his wallet. then asked my to open my the second piece of paper...wait for it here it comes, that same exact scribble was on the paper he was writting on. the dude pulled the hand switch-a-roo on me. i knew then that this was messed and asked for another donation, all i had was a $20 and a $50, i had a moment to look in i pulled out a $20, and he said no, no, no, a bigger donation...i could not move i could not call out for assistance, i knew there were people around me and again i pulled the $50 and gave it to him...after that i think he was still trying to hustle me for my last $20 but after a bunch of people started to walk out of the office bulding and he left...but what was so strange was for the next 15 minutes after i was either recovering from the hypnosis or i was just in shock that i have been robbed of my money....

let's just say that was some crazy expensive large double double coffee. i sure now feel embarrassed as there were a lot of people around, what sucked is no one did a thing.

Guys, I experienced this exact same thing in Hong Kong some 20 years ago way back in 1990! So, you know this trick must have been circulating amongst these Indian conmen for a very long time. Maybe even centuries who knows. And like Mikhail who posted earlier, I too felt in a kind of hynoptic trance then. Could not help but reach into my pocket to give him the money. Probably some of these Indian conmen are better trained hypnotist than others. This is simply an age old Indian conman trick.

Just happened to me in Picadilly in London. Indian guy ( a sikh) comes up and tells me I'm lucky. Goes through the routine everyone else describes. Gives me a bit of crumpled paper. Asks me about favourite number, favourite flower and my wife's name. I uncrumple the paper and there it all is. The paper hadnt left my hand that I noticed. To be honest I gave him £20 because I was impressed but its definitely a trick. Just like to know how its done. Left me with a weird feeling, part conned and part just weird.

i met a "yogi" a few years back, he did the same tricks as you all mention but as a couple of you also mention there were questions he answered and things he told me that did not involve writing things on a bit of paper. i am leaning towards the fact that i was scammed but it still doesn't explain the two VERY significant things he told me that actually turned out to happen (he told me my father was sick which no-one knew then, not even my father, and that March 26 the following year would be a significant date and turned out to be the date my father had a major operation). i am heading back to bangkok in a few weeks, i have to admit i am a bit curious to meet him again.

Hey everyone,

Same thing just happened to me yesterday. I'm from America but my parents were born in Thailand. I'm in Siem Reap, Cambodia and this same guy with a tattoo on his right hand (he said it means 'one with God') followed me into a store telling me about my luck blah blah blah and he said he originally charges $20 but for me he'll settle with $5. He also charmed me by speaking THAI because he said he lived in Bangkok for a few years and I took him as a fairly nice man with good intentions. However, I understand cold reading techniques because I worked as a fortune teller for fun at a Halloween festival and knew that most of what he said was bullshit. The only thing that really surprised me was the same paper trick, where he had me crumble a piece of paper which later matched certain questions that I answered. I'll admit, I was pretty impressed - UNTIL...

I was eating outside at a restaurant TODAY and I see this same man with two of his friends in similar attire walk into a liquor store across the street and buy a bottle of whiskey!!!!

Don't trust these fake ass holy men! I tried to stalk him down after that but he avoided me...

For those of you who say "the paper never left my hand", you are not remembering everything. At one point, he will draw a circle on his pad of paper. He will ask you to write the name of your favorite country (or something else) inside that circle. He will then ask you to place the crumpled paper in that circle for just a moment, then take it back. During this moment, he will distract you and replace the crumpled piece of paper with the one that has the correct answers. It took my a minute to remember this step, but once I did the "miracle" was obvious.

In January, I also had the same thing happen to me in Singapore. I was crossing the footbridge over the river that leads to the Asian Civilisation Museum.

Travelling alone on vacation and just wandering the city in no hurry, I was an easy target. The Indian guy had black slacks, dress shoes and an open neck button up shirt. He also had a tall n' skinny accomplice hovering around wearing a turban.

Normally I'm not easily drawn into things but this guy "got me". If somebody is trying to explicitly sell me something then my guard is up. In this instance I was caught off guard and taken in by his seemingly genuine fascination with my forehead. "Look...I can see the lines on your head...the way they form tells a lot about the kind of person you are.." or some bullshit.

He pulled the same tricks as described above. In short, I very reluctantly handed him $20 SGD (he was haggling me to give him at least $50) and I walked away very pissed off, embarrassed and confused.

It's clever in that you don't know you're paying for something until they produce the bill. They put you in a trance and then guilt trip you into handing over money for something that you didn't even want in the first place. Your instincts tell you that you've been scammed but you still hand over the money because you feel like you've already bought into their "service" and need to fulfill your own side of the deal. It's quite bizarre.

I had an hour to kill in Khao San Road with my 4 yo daughter whilst her dad had a massage, so when I was approached by a very sweet 12 ish yo boy, clean and smart in a turban, to have my fortune told I thought good way to pass the time. Led to a bright pink plastic stool in the entrace of an alleyway just off KSRd. His mentor took over soon after. A Sikh guy about 40 yo, smartly dressed. Both told me I would live a long life, to over 92 years! and kept telling me what a good person I am and that my family is royal (yeah more like Caroline Aherne's Royale family). The trick with the paper, I'm pretty sure having read all this that he used carbon paper. He gave me a small crumpled piece of paper but I watched him writing and my mum's name, my husband's name etc are all quite long and he didn't seem to be writing for long enough. Then he asked me for the names etc and wrote them down on his pad. Then he asked me if I believe in god and wrote the word GoD on another small piece of paper and scrunched it and put it in the same hand. So I think that the first piece of paper said GoD and the second was the carbon copy behind the page he wrote the names I spelled out. At the time I was astonished and sais "how did you do that?" he seemed injured and showed me the picture of his master and students of which he apparently is one and told me he is a guru. Having said this the things he said about what kind of person I am were detailed and accurate. He told me I would have a good son in 2012 and that I would return to Bangkok the same year. Bad luck for my daughter who wants a sister! Can't see me back in Bangkok with a baby though.

I feel like such a dick!! They did it to me today!!! but they played the children card of saying it was for an orphange!!! But it was pretty intimmidating as this is on the Koh San road right at the top where near the burger king! They take you down the back street and there were two of them as well so as i single female traveler it was intimidating, but yeah did the crafty trick of catchin my eye!!! dont have any sympathy for me, im so annoyed with myself, however what I am concerned is that they are so open about it plus they stick out like sore thumbs, 3 guys wearing turbans in an asian country!!! JUST BE CAREFUL DONT BE A THICK IDIOT LIKE ME< LESSON LEARNED!!!

I suspect there are several of these conmen around so be careful. In 2008, I encountered a well dressed Sikh man in a suit and wearing a turban in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong. Today, I just encountered another turban wearing Sikh in Clarke Quay, Singapore. These were two different men, but both started their approach by saying that I had a 'lucky forehead' and that good things were going to happen. They are definitely cheats out to get money so just walk away and don't give in to their requests/demands.

Aaaand another one from Khao San Road, the bright pink stools in the alleyway, the day planner full of papers and the, like, 1930's-looking group photo of the Indian guys, the "handshake" where he weirdly grabs your hand and presses it to his heart. I lived in Bangkok for 2 years and China for 4 more, and am very practiced at shaking off aggressive touts/vendors and can usually do it with smiles all around... so I don't know what the hell happened, but he got the mom's name right, etc, and it wasn't until he started demanding huge sums of money, and more than we'd originally agreed upon, that I realized with total horror that I was alone in an alley with a complete con artist. I'm sick at my own naivete.... I'm far past old enough to know better.

The thing is if he didn't ask for such huge amounts of money and guilt-trip you like crazy, so that by the end of the interaction he may as well be wearing a huge "I'M A SCAMMER" sign around his neck, he could have a decent, legit fortunetelling business (inasmuch as other non-psychic, ineffective fortunetellers do). But he does, and he's aggressive. Don't follow the guy.

Ok Im a sceptic and trying my hardest to think I was scammed but please tell me this:

1. First piece of paper went in my pocket and never came out. How did he switch the papers?

2. How did he know personal stuff that nobody in the world knows? He said straight out that my ex was pregnant but she aborted and that this is still eating me up to this day. There was no prompting, no lead up questions, nothing. He just came straight out and said it.

Everyone except my ex and I think that it was a miscarriage.

Can someone please explain this?

He has arrived in Zurich today - I must admit I fell for it a bit because he is very intuitive, and was very accurate about certain things. I did get scammed out of 60 Francs (about 50 USD), but I wrote it off as "entertainment" - I have paid twice as much for bad theater. He was flattering, and the piece of paper in your hand is a good trick. Funny thing is, I knew I was being scammed, but I just went along - maybe they guy actually does have mind reading abilities, or maybe just hypnotizes you - whatever, it works.

Hello everyone, I need your help ASAP!!

I also got tricked by this man, here is his picture again Singh.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j54/DrShaggy/Singh-BKK.jpg

However the trick went even further with me, he also started with the paper thing then he told me so many more personal things that I believed him..and he said he would help me find luck, love, happiness, good luck blabla... He didnt ask me for any money.. (yet!) , so he has been praying for me for the past 2 days and sending me messages with all the blessings. Today I met with him in the temple and she showed where he is praying for me. He just asked me 20 SDG to buy the flowers and coconut for the prayer but nothing else. I am suppose to meet with him again in the next few days, what should I do?? Should I just ignore him ? or get his full name?
I had many doubts, this is why I was searching for answers in this blog!
please give me your advice.

Ok so this happened to me in Sydney circa 2004 but I never bothered looking into it until now. From all the posts I've read on this thread, most ppl seem content that this trick is a sleight of hand but happily ignore the people who didn't touch a circle or pad of paper, and had their private lives told to them without any prompting. I'm yet to read one feasible explanation for this whole "charade". While I am convinced that this is a scam that some Indians are trying to make money off all over the world (I lost $5 AUD which isn't going to bother me), I am not convinced that any of the explanations on here are reasonable. I don't have a theory of my own, but I'm beginning to believe that darker forces are at work here. Call me crazy, but something about this seems supernatural and beyond our understanding. Unless mind-reading is a perfectly normal human phenomena, and I'm the idiot. I can't be the only one curious about this.

Met this guy today in Singapore near Bugis...amazing, amazing trick! I would have given him some money if I had smaller bills, just for the act, but I didn't. He offered to walk me to the ATM...that wasn't about to happen. So, in turn, I wasn't allowed to keep the piece of paper with all my "information". Which is a bummer as I totally wanted to put it in my scrapbook.

Does anyone know how the trick was done?

Foolishly went down an alley with a guy calling himself 'Yogi Man'. Not sure why because I'm well travelled and used to people trying to scam me. Anyway he told me three good things were going to happen in December, you think too much and that my girlfriend was a bad woman and she has given me bad blood. He then said I've spent time in hospital, seeing as I have a big scar across my neck that would not be difficult to deduce. He did the choose a number thing and then a colour, when I said red he said choose another colour as he had written blue on the piece of paper. He carried on telling me my girlfriend was a bad woman and that I would come back to Bangkok in 2012 or 2013 with my true love. He then said you do drugs. When I said no he got quite angry. He said I needed to give him big notes. I said I'll give you 20 baht. Put it in that wallett thing and walked away. I went for a coffee in Coffee World and him and two others had followed me and were sitting in McDonalds watching me. A simple bit of magic wouldn't have bothered me but this guy had nastiness about him.

Happened in hong kong walking past the Peninsula Hotel. The guy was Indian, young, dressed in good clothes, pants and a shirt - no turban in sight! He used the lucky line and began to walk away then came back to me. He was very convincing, talked so fast I was struggling to keep up with him and he had me in an almost trance like state. After 10 mins or so of this rampant talk and tricks, he asked me to chose a donation amount and I gave him $100 hong kong dollars. He got irritated and insisted on more. I said I couldn't afford more and he said I spend more than that on whisky and cigarettes. I said I don't drink or smoke, which is true. But he insisted and I gave him another $100. I knew it was a scam but I did it anyway!! He showed me pictures of his guru and him feeding handicapped children, BUT the pictures were fuzzy and were not of what he said. Yet I gave him the money??!! It's such a horrible feeling!

Had me going for a while as the situation was just so out of the ordinary (literally on our stand where we are doing business!).

Anyway he looks like this:http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j54/DrShaggy/Singh-BKK.jpg

I was just reading these posts and couldn't help but think he gets around a bit which led me onto thinking about the poor person who has to sit next to him on the flight, probably get to the destination and have given 'holy man' their life savings . . . well they will certainly be 'enlightened'!

I was in Sri Lanka about 20 years ago and there were lots of guys dong the "You are very lucky man" thing.

There's a few doing it on Sukhumvit Road now as well. Reading the comments here this is a pretty wide-spread long-running scam.

About the people that said the guy 'told them things about themselves'. No Hocus-Pocus there. Sometimes these guys can have an 'inside' man, like maybe the bell-boy or cashier in your hotel, or a bar girl you did, who they can pay to supply them with a bit of your personal info.

That happened to me once in the Philippines, a guy approached me and knew my name and nationality, hotel, etc... and told me he knew me..... Didn't I remember him? etc...

It was easy to trip the guy up but somehow this complete stranger got a bunch of info on me........ It ain't magic.

Beware of scammers!
