Indian Holy man
Wednesday, 21 January 2009

I have read about this man here once' but not in its own thread so here goes.

Today walking my way back from the dentist just about near the food market on the junction of Asoke and Sukimvit roads when i was aproached by an Indian Man in a nice suit and turbon claiming to be a 'Holy Man'

The trick is very clever and involves the old magic of hand faster than the eye some veryfast talking (psycology) and a Wallet style note pad that he uses as a prop'

First he tells you how lucky you are as he writes something down on a scrap of paper and scrunches it into a ball and makes you hold onto it and then put it inside his Wallet style folding notepad and take it out again and put it back again all inbetween some fast talking. He then takes his business card out of his foldup notepad and gives that to you to read' some usless info about his skill. While you look at that he explains that he is a Holy Man and gives all money he gets to needy people.

Then a barrage of questions for you to answer' a bit like numerology. He gives you a scrap of paper to write down your answers without showing or telling him' here's the prop, he draws a circle on a piece of paper inside the notepad and asks you to put your paper on that before you write your answers, of course he cannot see. There are thin loose pieces of paper inside the folder. Then at the end of all this he takes out the scrunched up paper from the note pad that he wrote on in the beginning that you held for a while at the start' and of course it has the same answers on it as if he read your mind before he even met you.

He then writes down a choice of donation for you to give to him and to bring you luck blah blah. All i will say is that the lowest choice he gives you is 2000bht. I believe he has several tricks as he was trying to pull another one to prove himself but after i started questioning him the trick was not work (only works if you play by his rules) so he gave up on me' tryed to make me feel quilty and went on his way. (one last try to get some cash)

He is very good and you will think you have seen a miracle' yes he is that good but SADLY FOR HIM he did not get any of my money nor answer my questions about his 'Special ability'

Anyway his secret is carbon paper and the delivery of the trick (prop and fast talking) to fool you into thinking he has real ability.

If you see him just enjoy the trick and wish him luck' it took me hours to figure it out as it really does seem like he read your mind', that part is very clever and i did not see him read any paper, well at least he made me think i didn't.

none of these explenations for how this "trick" is done are clear enough or explain the the experience that I had. I had ther piece of paper in my hand and when I opened it what he said he would tell me about was there.
1) How did he replace what was tightly held in my hand?
2) how did he tell me things about myself , and my fa,ily that I did not reveal to him?

It does indeed leave one with a strange feeling! I admit I was scammed. I would like to "get over the feeling that I was scammed by resorting to the beleif that it was just a trick.

This is common in Pattaya and Phuket also, the indian guys will approasch you on the street os in the malls usually with the opening line, you are a lucky man, you want to know why.

I even know one of these guys, he used to sell suits in Pattaya, now he does the trick in Phuket.

I experienced the same kind of thing today (2 hours ago) on Khao San Road, and my questions are the same as Gregory O's:
- I also held the piece of paper tightly in my hand
- the writing on his paper was not exactly the same (for instance, on his paper, my birth date was in letters - NOV -, on mine, in numbers - 11 -), so it couldn't be carbon paper for instance.
So, what's the trick???

One guy tried this on me as Traveller detailed, on lower Sukhumvit around the Nana BTS station on the Sois on the 'odd' side of Sukhumvit Road. He told me I look lucky then all of a sudden I got passed to his scamming partner in crime. The showed me my favorite color 'blue' which a lot of men like anyways, then some other stuff then asked for a donation, he got way upset when I gave him 10 baht and I laughed. He asked me if I was joking, I said no he approached me, not the other way around.

Guess that was what the dirty looking Indian guy who approached me and my friends in Patong was trying to do.

He went on about how he was a well respected holy man in India which surely explains why he's walking around a Thai red light district.

I ingored him but he stood around giving me a strong stare. I told him I wasn't interested in anything he had to say and he told me "You have a funny face". I wanted to hold up a mirror as he looked quite dirty with a huge beard.

I noticed he had a young boy in his early teens with him dressed in a dress shirt and black slacks. The boy said nothing and seemed to look away the whole time. Not sure what that was all about.

Tall Indian guy with white shirt and black pants... about 25 years old said his name was John Singh just did that to me on Sukhumvit near Emporium (I think he had a Hindu symbol tattooed on his right hand).... did everything that was written here "He told me I looked lucky and wrote things on a piece of paper... which I held tightly in my hand and maybe I'm the psychic because I guessed what he probably guessed what I would guess????? He stated I had no sickness in my life which I haven't .... yet.... ... but he also said I had two kids... a girl and a boy. Which I do... and how did he know that? I am rarely seen with them especially shopping because they stay home with the nanny. Guy gave me two phone numbers too... I knew it was a scam, because he was with a darker Indian guy who had left.... but he left a really wierd feeling after he mentioned my kids. I'm with Gregory O's ... I hope it was a scam. I told him if he just wanted to scam me for money...tell me.. but don't talk about my kids.

Well even though I think the people you find in Thailand and other countries are scammers, I can very well tell you that there are some very powerful people in India.
Don't expect to find them road side though, most probably they would be millionaires and booked all the time.

I once met someone who verbally gave me the whole map of my house with even small details like what painting I have on the left corner in my bedroom, and much more.
Without even knowing my name he talked to me about my relatives and who needed help, who may not be good for me etc.
Plus he mentioned that how I make my living (i.e. what my business is). Which was also 100% correct.

I would also recommend to not to fall in for these scams in Thailand and other countries but don't also think that this is all fake and impossible.
If you find the right person in India then believe me you are in for a shock!

Wow... I thought I was the only one this happened to. This happened to me today and I have to say it was weird... Indian Guy approaches me and says I " have a lucky forehead" says a few words.. rights something on a post-it.. crunches it and tells he to hold it.. and then goes on to say things about my past, and future... He guessed some things dead on.. I was still suspicious.. and then he asked he a number between 1-5.. I pick 3.. and then he asked me a color... any color except black or white...I pick "blue"" he goes on and says how lucky 3 and blue are and then he tells me to read what he wrote on the post- it... Wow it was 3 and blue.. Freaked me out.. he asked for a donation but I did not have any money on me.. I would have gave him 20 if I would have had it... I know it is a trick .. but how did he do it.. paper never left my had... I have been thinking all day about this...

Hi guys

After reading your comments, I'm convinced too that this man is Thailand version of David Baine.

I was at Emporium taking pictures and he made a comment about my past which was kinda true. From there, I was sucked into wanting to find out more. Guess such things are too good to be true. Anyway I invited him for coffee to find out more. Yup he did those small paper tricks which was amazing, tear the paper into 4 equal sections, roll them and hand them in your hand and when if the paper becomes one then he promised to reveal more about your future. His another trick is the guessing 1 - 5 number and choosing a color which cannot be black, white and orange. When I said ORANGE, he said that color was forbidded. Then I knew something is not right. Later he asked for donation to his master by showing a photo of his master and his many followers. From then on, I was starting for show less interest becoz money is being involved. So I said I have a plane to catch and thanked him for his advice.

I even have a photo of him.

If anything amiss, I'll have evidence in hand and details relating to the above.

Take care guys!

God bless!

Rgds,
Singapore Guy

This guy got me in 2003. He had a young lad working as a spotter down the khao san rd, he chatted
to me then persuaded me to let him read my future down an alley, I followed! Anyway, he asked me
to relax and asked me a question that I could'nt fathom, then while I was confused he asked me to
Put a 'lucky' charm against my forehead, and then asked questions etc, anyway, what he did was
Hypnotise me and whilst I was under he asked about my family, life etc and wrote it all down,
then brought me out of hypnosis and 'revealed' all this info, then charged, bank card was missing

this thing happened to me in Toronto just the other day. freaking right beside a RCMP outpost, as i was getting some Timmies coffee he started out saying ''you have a lucky face'' and he had a crazy stare that looked really mezmorizing ...he some how put me in a trance, and forced me to give him money twice....first series of questions asking to choose a flower, come on people it is always a rose, the asked to say a number between 1-5, again it's alway a freaking 3, they were both written on a piece of paper, he also had me holding another piece of paper crumpled in my hand along with an item(pretty sure to keep my hand from closing too tighly) then he opened his wallet with papers, i saw some cash US$20, and a photo with a bunch of people, he said it was of his master and some other people and pointed at a person saying it was himself. after told me to open the paper in my hand it had rose and the number 3 on there...and then asked for a donation....i was like wtf, but i could not control my hand and i pulled out a $20 and put it in....i tried walking away afterward but there was some crazy mind control he had on me. the second series of questions were of personal family matter stuff, and of course i reveal a bleak description as possible, but anyways for one of the questions he had to scribble out something and again told me to look at the picture in his wallet. then asked my to open my the second piece of paper...wait for it here it comes, that same exact scribble was on the paper he was writting on. the dude pulled the hand switch-a-roo on me. i knew then that this was messed and asked for another donation, all i had was a $20 and a $50, i had a moment to look in i pulled out a $20, and he said no, no, no, a bigger donation...i could not move i could not call out for assistance, i knew there were people around me and again i pulled the $50 and gave it to him...after that i think he was still trying to hustle me for my last $20 but after a bunch of people started to walk out of the office bulding and he left...but what was so strange was for the next 15 minutes after i was either recovering from the hypnosis or i was just in shock that i have been robbed of my money....

let's just say that was some crazy expensive large double double coffee. i sure now feel embarrassed as there were a lot of people around, what sucked is no one did a thing.

happened to me exactly as described, i was in shock for the rest of the day, i felt like such an idiot afterwards, he go my number and tried calling me the next day so he can meet me in my hotel. stated by telling me i have a very lucky forehead, i'm usually very sceptic but he was so smooth. he got me at the MBK for a 1000 THB. tried to get more. said his name was yogi and i've seen a picture of him in one of these forums, tatoo on right arm too. life is a learning experience.

Guys, I experienced this exact same thing in Hong Kong some 20 years ago way back in 1990! So, you know this trick must have been circulating amongst these Indian conmen for a very long time. Maybe even centuries who knows. And like Mikhail who posted earlier, I too felt in a kind of hynoptic trance then. Could not help but reach into my pocket to give him the money. Probably some of these Indian conmen are better trained hypnotist than others. This is simply an age old Indian conman trick.
