Parking Problems

This is not really a scam but a WARNING: Shopping at MBK Center is NOT Safe!

Last week (Wednesday, Aug. 1) when parking at MBK Center, I followed the lead of their “yam” who was supposed to be guiding me into a parking space. Suddenly a boom like a clap of thunder rang out. I looked in front of me to see if it was raining – only to see the guard in front of me continue to signal me to keep moving forward. But something was wrong. Instinctively I looked to my left rear to see that the car had a run in with a post. I said @#$%!, and drove backward – glancing up to see the guard STILL motioning me to move forward – only to stop when I got out of the car cursing him –  I walked to the rear to check the damage.

Asking in Thai to talk to his manager, Khun (I forget his name) scratched his head in bewilderment as to why this farang was so upset. I drove the car up to the next level parked and asked another yam to speak with the manager of the guards. He took me to the Property Care Services office to meet with Khun Banyong Chandaeng, Service Manager, Integrated Services Division. Khun Banyong speaks very good English.

I told Mr. Banyong my story and told him I wanted MBK to take responsibility for the damage as I was following the guards instructions. He instructed Khun Somchai Kaewsrisuk (Inspector, Security Division) to investigate and he followed me down to the car where pictures were taken. Returning to talk with Mr. Banyong, I asked why the guards did not have adequate training.  He admitted that while the guards received some training they did lack adequate skills.

Another investigating guard explained to Khun Banyong that the yam guiding me said he was telling me to move back – not forward. Yeah, right!

At that point I was really concerned and reminded Khun Banyong  that safety wise, these were troubled times all over the world.  Big shopping centers like MBK that attract Thai and foreigner alike are open targets. I asked him what would happen if there was a major security alert in the Mall, would his guards know how to handle the situation.  He was silent. His silence spoke loud and clear.

I strongly urge all shoppers to stay away from MBK Center until the Center releases a public statement on readiness to handle safety issues and comment on training of its guards. If one parking incident can not be handled professionally by guards who supposedly are trained to handle ALL safety issues, from parking straight in the garage to crowd control in case of emergency, we are all in danger.

Scott, I think you have forgotten on where you are. Either you have been here to long or not long enough. You are not that important so I suggest you pack your bags & go back to your safe & sterile home country. I mean come on so you have a little prang. Who was driving?? Open your eyes & look for yourself. Parking in MBK is not that hard. If you want to get directions on parking do so at your own risk. Its pretty much straight in by reversing. I would say you cant reverse a car to save yourself. How you connect a blaming a security guard & there being security issues of someone driving there car in to a crowd is amazing. Get a life!!

I think Mike is a little harsh on Scott. Yes, if you're backing up your car you are ultimately responsible. But if the guard is taking it upon himself to help you, and he ends up hurting you, does he not share some culpability? I think so. Of course you can argue, "Well, this is Thailand" and you are right. Sadly, you are right. This is still a culture that is not far removed from the stone age. Foreigners, beware.

Well Burt, you are a bit harsh to, "This is still a culture that is not far removed from the stone age" is very degenerative to this society and totally untrue. If this is your opinion you should ask yourself why you are here, and be honest.
Concerning the wistle blowers, just ignore them, they have and take no resposibility for you and your vehicle anyway.

Andre is close to the crux of this issue. Thai culture does not recognise "responsibility" or "accountability". We see this all the time in the manner in which all Thai governments and the civil service operate. With these organisations setting the example of "I get paid for having gotten the job, not for doing it efficiently", how can you expect the basic Thai working manner to behave otherwise?

As to MBK making such a statement, Scott, you are in fantasyland. Why would they set standards that can not be achieved. You have to remember that these guys would be in that job for only a few weeks. The stores would need to be continuously training replacements.

And why pick on MBK alone? Go and talk with the other stores to ask the same questions. Then you can recommend that farangs stop shopping in all Thai stores.

This is wonderful. What goes around, comes around. As countless farang continue to suffer in 'Land Of The Free', in time, shall tourism trickle to a drip, then drop to a stop. As the giant billboard says in BKK: "Inspire The Next". Let Living Kharma inspire the 'Next Big Thing' - a bigger and better Tsunami in 2007. Screwing foreigners equals screwing one's own country in the long run. Alas, they have never really learned to not bite the hand which feeds it, i.e. "Don't shit where you sit". Wot? No Greng Jai? We no hansum man?

Crikey, I am illiterate. Above, it should have read: "...not bite the hand which feeds them." Here are other examples: "Don't have sex with your kids", "Don't have affairs at work", and "Don't bleed the suckers (farangs) dry since you will need to save a little for tomorrow". This is akin to the concept once held by cannibals in Africa who tied up their victims and cut off a hand today, a foot tomorrow, etc. until the victim gradually died over a period of days or weeks. This is called 'harvesting' the scams so that the fresh-faced patsies never stop falling off the steps of the BKK Airport. Keep 'em coming!

Classic case of someone screwing up and looking for someone else to blame.

Why oh why can't people take responsibility for their own actions?

The Thai's should do what the majority of car parks in the west do, i.e display notices everywhere denying resposibility for accidents, theft etc. It's not just the Thai culture that allegedly denies resposibility, it's pan demic.
I for one am p***sed off with people who moan and groan about the Thai's and Thailand, are there no scams in the west? are all farangs honest? do western women never rip off guys? get real gents, if you don't like it go home. Me I love it here warts an all !!

haha... reading the comments here really makes me laugh, especially dting dtong's. I mean if the farangs are so upset with Thais or BKK, then dun go. Stay in your own country. No one forcing anyone to go right? If you have to be posted there, then resign. These issues didnt happen only in the recent years but more than a decade but yet Bangkok's tourism only keeps going up instead of declining, doesnt it say something? I agree with Bangkok Phil, take responsibility for ur own actions. Who can we blame for our own stupidity. You are the one driving, obviously you should be the best person to know if you should reverse or go straight.
