Scammed by a Brit on the street
Tuesday, 14 July 2009

A couple of years ago (2007) I was walking around Central Chitlom and was approached by an English guy who asked me very nicely, excuse me Sir do you speak English. Off course I said yes and he went on, thanks God I meet you, I am so lucky you speak English and explains to me that his girlfriend took all his money and ran away leaving him with not enough to go home and added plenty of details... He asked if I could help and give him 500 Baht. I argued that a bus to his place would cost maximum 50B and he said ok can you help me with that...

The guy is about 45 or plus, is not tall average built and wear usual clothes, he has a VERY strong British accent.

I told him I did not buy his story as too many things sounded fishy and he should leave me alone.

A few months ago, the same guy approached me in Emporium and started the same story, I did not immediately recognised his face but his accent and the story was so similar that I knew who he was, and I told him he approached me before and he just walked away.

Telling my story to a friend, he told me he was scammed by the same guy for 500 Baht... Judging by the number of tourists he can approach, with just a few lucky hits a day he must be living off quite well over here.

I wish I'd meet him again to take him to the police as I am sure he is living here illegally.

or better yet, if there are any mib ( thai police) near by, say in a LOUD voice something about you are not interested in drugs or under age girls.

There are a couple of famous "stranded foreigners" in Bangkok. One on Sukhumvit Soi 4 even has his suitcase with him and all he needs is a few hundred baht to get to the airport supposedly.

Another young man sits near Sukhumvit MRT station collecting money to get a ticket home, he's been there 3 years by my reckoning!

Its hard to say no to someone in genuine need but these jokers change your faith in human nature sometimes.

Anyways, it's another means of begging, some people have to do it to survive (I hope), can't imagine the struggles and I have no idea on their history. It's sad but perhaps there's just no other choice. But yeah, I can give my sympathy to those rather than the big time criminals in luxury hotels and mansions....:)

More like begging it sounds... found one of these comic characters on soi 22 Sukhumvit, where I live, a month ago. Sitting drunk at a bar and stopping any falangs passing buy and asking for cash because his girl toked his money, and he's so stupid, and he was weak etc. He needed them for a new passport.
Funny thing, the table was full of empty bottles, so I just said: "I don't give money, sorry! But if you're hungry, I'll buy you some food and a coffee"
... he wasn't hungry.
P.S. Actually I just felt like kick him there, but it was so close to my building and people know me as good citizen :)

I was in Bangkok in 1989, hanging around with the usual suspects. T'was this Scottish fella who used to beg from Thai office workers at Siam Square. Had a sign written in Thai by the owner of the salubrious establishment we frequented. the sign said he had all his stuff stolen, etc. He used to make 1500 baht some days. Not bad for 1989. Told me there was a beggars' circuit in East and Northeast Asia. Gave each other tips on where to beg, etc.

@Jake, understand what your saying, but where does one draw a line? There are a few farang who have run out of money in Thailand and just don't want to go home? So, they succumb to story telling (scamming). The Thai Government have their own citizeans to worry about, hence I believe it best for pennyless farangs to return home and treated (free in Europe) for any addictions (Thai women might be difficult one though). I would give someone the money to return home if I could see they were in trouble, but would they?

If someone approachs you seeking money just direct them to the timeshare touts who are on a commission of 3000baht for each customer they entice off the street to attend a 90min presentation, which actually goes for 3hrs.
Tell the guy to offer to go to the presentation for half the commission or for whatever amount is agreed on.
That way the guy gets his money and also a feed if he asks for one whilst at the presentation.

This has happened to me a couple of times. It's difficult because it's impossible to know if they're genuine.

The first time it happened the guy came up with the standard sob story of how he'd been robbed in Koh Samui and couldn't get money from the bank until Monday (how he'd managed to get to BKK in the meantime I don't know!) Anyway, I half believed him and gave him some money. A few days later I saw him eating a nice farang breakfast and I enquired how he was. He showed no recognition and seemed annoyed that I'd interrupted his meal.

The next time someone came up to me with a similar story I politely told her (a woman, this time) that I was very sorry but I could not pay her. Then she got angry and started shouting at me about how bad I was for not helping her. Now for all I know her story might have been true, but after her tirade I was glad of my decision. I know if I was robbed and needed to ask someone for money I would be extremely apologetic and it's up to each individual whether to pay or not.

I did have a friend who said she lost all her money in Vietnam years ago and someone helped her and bought her a ticket home. She said that she could easily have taken the money and not paid him back, but he had trusted her and I believe she sent money back to the guy after she returned home. So genuine situations do occur and it's nice when people can help each other out. But watch out for people who do this for a living. One or two people have suggested that it is not a scam, but I feel that it is. Think twice before giving money and if there's anything dodgy about them don't pay.

I've had this scam more elaborately, by email. A friend of mine saying she was stuck in a internet cafe with just a few coins after being mugged in London. He phone and passport were gone. She was desparate to pay her hotel bill and get back home and would repay me imediately upon return. I decided to ring her, she answered and she said she was still in Sydney. Someone had obtained her email account password or something. I emailed the person back and said I didn't think the $2500 she said she needed would be sufficient to keep her in the style to which she was accutomed and I was organising a rock Concert to raise money for her and, once the tickets had sold, would send around a limousine to pick her up and take her shopping so she could forget the whole horrible experience. I heard no more from them.

I'm not a scammer but I've been helped by people in Thailand back in the early 90's when I was a student and didnt carry around credit cards. I was on my way from BKK to Phuket via bus on arrival left my backpack on the bus with my cash, passport, camera, and clothes. I felt sheepish asking anyone for help but had no choice. I had no money and Western Union was closed. I had a reserved hotel room but no cash. Thank goodness a couple from Mexico helped me. Well the guy let me use his laptop at his hotel to send an email to my parents and paid for my hotel that night and bought me dinner. The next day I had my folks wire me money for the rest of my trip and I took them out for dinner and repaid them the hotel tariff. They actually tried not to accept my money and I had to insist. If it wasn't for those kind folks I don't know what might have happened to me.

Guess I'm a little different. I can turn the scam around on them. Did so on some Nigerians trying to scam me with their usual hogwash story. I eneded up getting 1,000 baght out of them. They threatened me of course, but it was an empty threat--they back down in the end.
Then a farang thrust a usual bullshit story on me about about "My GF left, bla bla bla" I told him I had money in the bank to give to him, but I needed 200BHT to get it out because I had to pay for a replacement card--and some more Sh*^%. (The real cost is much more-but I figured he could come up with that much to hand to me, which he did.) I enjoyed a couple of beers on him after I ditched him. I've done this stuff many times. There used to be a Frenchman who did this scam on Silom Road years ago........

Having said that I had the scam tried on me not once but twice in the parking lot of a Walmart in the USA.(!!!)

This must be one of the oldest, lamest confidence games going....... but it is still despicable because the con artist is taking advantage of the kindness of good-hearted people in order to steal their money.
