There's a really dodgy looking white conman who lurks on Khao San road almost every day. He' plays the part of a tourist very well, wearing a fanny pack and sporting a large beer belly to boot. He's usually accompanied by a nasty looking old Thai man. These two pray on good-natured tourists by approaching them with a friendly smile and an offer of help. The white guy will do the talking and claim to be from your country. He will then take your map and circle places he recommends you go. He will encourage you to buy sapphires. Then this tuk tuk driver conveniently appears and offers to drive you around all day for 40 baht. If you see these guys (and you will) be careful, but also let them know what you think of them.
