I was taken to a sea food restaurant called Phayathai Seafood, 346 29 Sriayudthya Road, Ratchathewi Bangkok by a tuk tuk driver. As we entered a man greeted us, and said her would prepare two large shrimp for us as appetizer. No mention of cost was made. We ordered a whole fish (don't remember species). In the picture the price seemed reasonable, and not real big. We got a big fish, me and my date were only able to eat about half. We did not notice any thing that indicated the price was per once. And no discussion was made of size or cost. We also had some beers (about four), soft drinks, and rice side dish. Our bill came to 7,783.00 bahts. I was stunned, I asked my date if she thought this ok, she said she didn't know. I ask the waitress and assured me it was correct. I paid with a credit card and we left. The next day after the effects of beer wore off, I realized I had been scammed.
We went to police station report it. After extensive explanation we told to go to restaurant and call the police. We did and a policeman came, but did nothing. While we were waiting for the police we noticed that all their business was by taxi drivers who brought in tourist. They all waited for their original passengers and drove them away. I think they all waited so as to get their commission. I also noticed that there were several men loitering there at entrance. I think they are thugs for people that refuse to pay. I also reported this incident to the airport tourist police. I was told to go the central station and make a report. I didn't go because I felt they would probably not do anything, and to cut my losses (taxi).
The reason for the complain is 1. I was never told what cost of if any for two large shrimp. 2. If the menu stated the price per once, it must have been very small. I don't think it was. and 3. the total weight and cost of fish should have been disclosed.
These are the facts which I consider to be completely accurate at key points. I have my credit card charge receip, I can if you need make a copy of it and send it to you.
