Siam Ocean World Doubles Prices
Written by Richard Barrow
Tuesday, 22 July 2008

It doesn't seem that long ago when the Siam Ocean World in Bangkok first opened its doors to the general public. I remember visiting during the first week. I gave it a good review though I also said that I thought the 450 baht price tag was a little expensive for what they were offering. It is not exactly world class and I have certainly seen better elsewhere. America, Australia and even Singapore have better aquariums. But, it is one of the best on offer in Thailand. I also gave it a thumbs up because it was charging the same for Thai people and foreign tourists. But, not any longer.

Last week I found myself back at Siam Paragon. I wasn't planning on visiting Siam Ocean World as it was a bit too expensive for a return visit. However, my sister and her family are coming to Thailand at the end of this month and I was doing some research. I wanted to check on the prices. Imagine my horror when I spotted that the prices had more than doubled for children and had considerably increased for adults. This small time aquarium is now charging a staggering 850 baht for adults and 650 baht for children! Not only that, they have gone down the road of double pricing. As usual, the management are ashamed of this so they try and hide the real prices from foreign tourists. Prices are normally written in Arabic numerals like Western countries. But, they decided to use the rarely used Thai numerals instead. Shame on them.

I don't know what their excuse can be. Why did they choose to be so greedy at a time when people around the world are tightening their belts. I know many Thai people have this impression that all foreigners are rich. They say that if they can afford to fly to Thailand then they must have lots of money. But, what they fail to realize is that many of these people saved up for years for this once in a lifetime holiday abroad. That in fact, the airfare alone would have depleted most of their holiday spending power and that they would have little left for the actual holiday itself. For my sister, this is their first holiday abroad as a family. With five of them, you can imagine how long it took them to save up for this holiday.

One of the excuses that places like Siam Ocean World give for charging exorbitant prices for foreigners is that this is the kind of price you would pay back home. If not more. But, why do you think people come to Thailand? Ask any Thai person and they will say the beaches. That is not exactly true. I have seen more pristine beaches elsewhere. Others will say the national parks with the wildlife and waterfalls. Again, I have personally seen much better elsewhere. So, why do people come to a place like Thailand for a holiday? The answer is, because it is cheap. You can have a meal on the street for not much more than $1. You can buy the latest Hollywood movies for $2 and fake brandnames for $5. So, who in their right mind would travel half way across the world to visit an aquarium that is the same price as back home?

Quite frankly, I think many of these tourist attractions that overcharge foreign tourists are only hurting themselves in the long run. As word spreads about the double price policy in Thailand and how expensive it can be for families, then people will start voting with their feet. Thailand has had a good run with their "Amazing Thailand" advertising campaign but it is all starting to get a little stale. The paintwork is starting to chip and people are starting to see what is really behind the Thai smile. Just take a look at the increase on reports of scams over at BangkokScams.com.

Come on Thailand, wake up. You have a beautiful culture and a beautiful land. Don't spoil it with greed. It is time to face the truth and do something about it. Otherwise, emerging markets like Vietnam and to a certain extent Cambodia and Laos will soon overtake us as the regional hub for tourism.

Well written and very accurate account of how many expats feel living here. The buzz is definitely shifting to Laos and Vietnam. Having just been back to Australia, I wasnt surprised to hear from many people that they will not be returning to Thailand again. It has definitely lost its shine. Like you say, there are better aquariums in other countries that actually charge less than than what they are charging and they do not have a price for locals and another more expensive one for tourists. I will definitely boycott Siam Ocean World from now on.

you have hit the nail on the head here. people pay for the more expensive airfair so they can enjoy a cheaper holiday in the long run. The Thais dont understand this concept, they think you arrive with pots of money and can afford to spend like you do in your homeland. I think a big problem with Thailand is that they have the only international airport in Asia and people dont realise that they can move on and go elswhere. If only Vietnam Cambodia or Laos would invest in an international airport( maybe they cant politically) Then Thailand wouldnt have the monopoly it has. I would love to see the day when Thailand is the second option. And the land of smiles is exposed as it really is. the land of false smiles.

Siam Paragon Mall can be very expensive as well Central world. I paid 2,000 baht or $60 for three plates of food and three sodas at a food kiosk at Central world. Shocking! Some parts of BKK has become very very expensive. Better to stick with National parks. Why would you want to go to Sea world when you can see Nature's beauty. Thailand is a place for wonderful adventure. I can visit Sea world at my home country and besides how good can Sea World be in a mall? But I agree those prices are outrageous!!!

A shocking example again, isn`t it. Or is it? Most complaining about skyrocking touristpices misses the greater perspective in that. The ever climbing numbers of tourist arrivals can not have with the velocity wich would be needed to cash in the desired interest rates of their investments made. Destinations like Phuket, Koh Samui an Koh Chang are nearly sold out of available landplots.

Thailand attracts a large number of budget travelers from the western hemisphere. There has been a quality tourist policy for years lingering to attract the more potential spenders from Japan, South Korea, China and nowsadays Russia too. The fewer visitors to spend more than the cheap Charlies attracted from the budget reputation of Thailand of the last decade. The question remains is - will there be enough quality travellers ever to satisfy the greedy tourism industry of Thailand?

But the ever faster accelerating entrance fees are the way to filter the budget travellers out of Thailand. Unfortunately exorbitant fees do not automaticly attract more potential tourists so there will be a hard time for the industry with less powerfull wallets from the west following the USD's decline and the wake of a worldwide recession.

What is truly "Amazing" about Thailand is that the Government is constantly lamenting the the falling number of tourists coming to Thailand, but does absolutely nothing whatsoever to outlaw dual pricing or clamp down on the many scams which drive tourists away.
It is as though they approve of such.

I agree here 100% I fell in love with Thailand when I came here last year with my family. However, one thing I didn't like is the greed of some people who just saw us like walking ATMs. Restaurants charged us more. Tourist attractions charged us more. We rented a jet ski in Pattaya and they tried to charge us 50,000 for damage we didn't do. It was like all Thai people just wanted our money. We would like to come again as we did have some good experiences. But, we will not go to places like Siam Ocean World who are just too greedy. As a family, we cannot afford to pay that much money. I think much better to go snorkelling in Phuket. If you have your own gear it is free and one hundred times better.

Give it a try.

ps It is the first aquarium I have ever been to and I was very happy with what I paid for.

Just wanted to comment generally on double pricing.

As a farang who lives in BKK with legit visa & work permit I can get a Thai drivers license. Although I prefer not to drive the small credit card sized driver's license is easily carried as ID in lieu of a bulky passport and I use it regularly to pay the Thai price to get into National Parks, Ancient City and a whole host of establishments that have double pricing. It also helps to speak Thai and when entering state owned establishments subtly mention how much Thai Tax you pay!

For those of us that come from countries that have large immigrant populations but who we are all share the same nationality (i.e. NZ, UK, OZ, US, Canada)the idea of double pricing reeks of racism and dare i say it: apartheid! In monocultures like Japan, Korea or Thailand foreigners are easily identifiable and as such an easy target for double pricing or restricted entry.

But there is another area of double pricing that is just as applicable but less obvious and does not discriminate based on nationality or ethnicity. I am speaking of course of 'discounts' offered by holders of certain credit cards. Here you are discriminated upon depending on you financial status.

One example is the Night Safari Singapore. Being ethnically mixed SG cannot double price based on easily identifiable nationality. Instead establishments here have "double pricing" based on your credit rating. Of course most visitors to Thailand will have a credit card so this type of double pricing does not just sideline foreigners but locals alike.

Seems rather ironic then that those most able to pay (because they have sufficient income to get a credit card) are the very same who are offered a discount!

Discriminatory pricing in Thailand is shameful and should be discontinued by the Thai authorities. Let the embassy or consulate in your country know you find this offensive and wrong. It is our responsibility to let them know they need to put a stop to this. Next thing you know they will have a increased prices based on your height.

I think the thai concept of rising prices is an asian business model

when you have less customers, so charge more to make the same daily profit.

less work for the staff, less overhead, ect.

running a price promotion is not a popluar concept in thailand, its much easier to raise the price than lower it

Siam Ocean World is Australian and was managed by them until recently.
The new manager is Thai, therefore he feels he has the right to charge the tourist double.
The Thai price is written in Thai numerals to trick the foreign visitor.
Shame on Ocean World.
This is happening all over town..Thai Boxing 235THB, the price is in Thai numerals. The foreign guest price is 1,500 -2,000THB.
Shameless

Sad that prices of Siam ocean world go up. In the near future it might be the only place left in Thailand to sea fish. There are more plastic bottles in the sea than fish. Coral is being destoyed rapidly as well. The islands: National parks often: Bars, noice, jetskys, no animals except for mosquitos and snakes. (More on two legs than the crawling ones) almost no fish left. a little bit of coral here and there ,piles of smoking waste. All the toilet waste going directly into the sea.
Gives the swimming falangs a nice brown tan!

There are ways to avoid paying it. When you get of the boat dont take a taxi. The easyist thing is to take a hotel on the main street before entering the park. Without luggage and walking nobody will charge you. If they ask say you stay at Toks or what soever. You payed allready. Hotels on the main street might be cheaper as well. Another option is: Walk the main street, and take a left turn before the medical post into a small street. After a while you reach a right turn, take it and you will come to the beach. Then you can walk searching a hotel, or comming on the beach take a right turn walk for a kilometer, go up the road again and take a taxi to whereever you want. Dont sit in a taxi alone. There should be more people in they might charge you a lot.

The strange thing about those entry prices is that over the last years entry prices for Thai stayed 20 bath.(For what I know) Thai bath didnt devaluate, for falangs its more expensive then a few years ago. Inflation? But not 2 or 300%. Besides prices for Thai didnt increase, at least as far as I know. Nothing wrong if falangs pay 100 bath. But as they didnt raise prices for Thai they shouldnt have raised them for farangs either.

Message to Haha and Thai person....foreigners are not wanted here..... I was there in the Tsunami in Phuket when it struck it was a disasterous period for us all thais and foreigners alike, but why on earth then did you all plead for aid, which incidentally was abused but I expected that! I laughed when I applied in Phuket at immigration for a new visa to be stamped in my new temporary passport . The Visa had to be given free of charge and it was a case of the official "chewing wasp" !!!!.
Imagine the revenue you lost at your airport, no farangs departing, so no "departure tax", must have killed you all letting those farangs out at U Tapeo without paying any tax.
Behaving like a 3rd world country which of course you are but charging first world prices will only lure the tourists away from your country into a more hospitable Laos and Vietnam and hopefully one day soon Burma. The only tourists left for you then will be Burmese, Nepalese, Cambodians which you treat like shit anyway., and basically do all the menial jobs for you guys !!!

@John

If you live here in Thailand legally, then if you show proof you get the 20b charge aswell in Samet, the same goes 99% of places that have double pricing. If you're just here on holiday chances are you earn about 20 time what the average Thai earns and can afford a few extra baht.
Do you think that a London cabbie or a NYC yellow cab driver doesn't go the long way when a foreigner gets into the cab. You can't even get into a black cab for the few baht your moaning about.
Thais do love foriegners and although websites like this are good to warn you about the scams, not everyone is out to get you. A little common sense and not believing in everything your told is all that is needed.

If you have the attitude like John here, stay at home.

written by theo, Sat 13 Dec 2008 13:18:36 MST
So if you live in thailand legally with a good farang pension you cannot affort those few extra bath and pay 20 bath. Prices for farangs have gone up the last years 200 to 300% This cannot be justified by inflation. Another question is what the money is used for. There are big waste dumps on the island. What does the national park against it? They throw angkors on the coral rifs Glas and speedboats. They allow more and more big shots to build resorts. Fire work is shot in the air in the middle of the night. (National park (ha ha) Shower water from resorts runs just over the beach to the sea. I have seen unknowing children of farang playing in it. I have no objection in paying 8 euro, if something usefull is done with my money.
...
written by theo, Sat 13 Dec 2008 13:56:54 MST
To add something: For Thais 20 bath is a lot? May be but the really poor dont come to Samet to swim. They come to work. The kind of Thai visiting Samet are not that poor. One sees them coming carying iceboxes, whiskey, often expensive farang whiskey, and spent the whole weekend drunk on the island. If prices for farangs go up with 200%, these people can spent more then 20 bath as well

Have you ever been to Thailand, have you ever tried showing documentary evidence to an ignorant Thai, who doesnt really care and has no idea what documents are needed to prove you work, live and contribute to the economy. The answer is most Thais hate foreigners, they are greedy and only want money. You should spend more time outside the go go boys clubs and maybe you will find out.

Another question is of course if Koh Samet is a national park or just a collection of disco beaches. In other parks there are put limits to visitors in december in order to protect nature. Nothing like that on Samet. The more visitors for the discos, the better. So why pay a high entrance fee for disco beaches?

I have seen that Aquarium (and the prices) and just walked away.... was going snorkelling at Koh Phi Phi anyway... some other Aussies on the way out told me it was crap and not to bother... Complete waste of time.

The Double standards in Thailand is unacceptable and well behind the rest of the World. I don't want to say too much because my fiance is Thai. However, where I live in Surfers Paradise which is a major tourist destination in Australia, if we charged "rich" tourists (e.g. Japanese (very cool and nice people!)) more than locals, then there would be Aussies screaming "racism".... perhaps rightly so!

If you don't want to play 3rd World anymore and want to play "developed World" with developed World prices, then it is time to change. Do you expect tourists to put up with it?

I agree that one of the most distasteful things about Thailand is the well-known double standards. Thailand is already losing it's appeal with Australians because of greediness. MANY people are now opting for Vietnam, Indo and Cambodia as a "back to basics" alternative.

I love Thailand and have been travelling there for 10 years. Things are changing though, perhaps also because of people like me travelling there too much.

The Thai Tourism industry should start making rules if it wants long term success... ANY tourism industry that becomes complacent and doesn't address tourist's concerns will feel the pinch in coming years... Before they know it Thailand will be branded the Country with "Double Standards" for tourists. This will be a shame after they just got "the land of drugs" monkey off their back that has been there forever.

I see a few people saying on the forum that tourists aren't wanted. That is a sad, uneducated comment... and a shame. Thailand's major source of economy is Tourism. If Thai's want to be back living in tin sheds, then keep treating tourists like shit...

Burma is a great alternative.. maybe THEY will appreciate tourism more than Thailand. Imagine if there will be the day that Thai people will be trying to jump the border into Burma!

Thailand means "land of freedom" Freedom to scam, Freedom to Have Double Standards, Freedom to Hate, Freedom to be Two-Faced, Freedom for Crime.

Goodbye Thailand. Pity, the majority of Thai people are FANTASTIC. But the majority of the people in the tourist industry are backed mainly by organised crime and are turning the WHOLE country to shit.

The Thai government better not think that just because Thailand is "flavour of the month" that travelers have some sort of loyalty for it. Once other people start reading comment boards like this, people will start finding other places to go to.

The Thai Tourism industry (if there is one) better pick up their game and start controlling these rouges. Big job! Good luck, you will need it. You are starting to Reap What you have sowed, Thailand.

Billy a good thread there... and yes the Australians would have a fit nowadays at the amount of racisim going on here in Thailand. in 1986, this country was beautiful and we did feel very comfortable here, but give me Vietnam, Loas, Cambodia and Burma any day. I for one after our annual vacation going home to Australia will be delighted with our new posting in Vietnam. When looking through the various sites eg this one and Thai visa site, its pretty evident that people have had enough.
