Tailor Scam
Written by Ken McKenna
Saturday, 14 July 2007

My wife and I are Irish and decided on taking a big holiday on the advice our of kids both of whom had been to Thailand. On our second day (7th June 2007) in Bangkok my wife and I had got off the sky train at Siam and were making our way to the MBK Centre for some shopping, A very well spoken local lady walked up beside us and engaged us in small talk. "Where are you from" "where are you going" She tried to convince us that far better value could be obtained from an international exporter who was only opening to the public on that day. She was willing to organise a Tuk Tuk for us. After some hesitation we declined.

We had walked a further 50 yards towards the MBK Centre when another very friendly person (male this time) approached with a similar story. Our defences were weakened as we felt that there must be some truth to what was being said to us, A Tuk Tuk was organised and next we found ourselves being delivered to the Manhattan Tailors at 455/42-45 Rama Road.

We were led into a room on our own where two of the staff got to work on convincing us of the merits of purchasing custom made cloths from them. The product would be high class, made of the best materials and of course they had a huge amount of repeat business. To make a long story short, after about a hour of being soft soaped , being constantly reassured of the their integrity and that we would be very satisfied we agreed to go ahead. This turned out to a very expensive and distressing mistake.

My wife paid 23,500 THB for two suits , a blouses and one skirt. I paid 12,500 BHT for a suit and two shirts and a tie. We realise now that we paid hugely over the odds. The measurement were taken and we both gave instructions on what we wanted.

It was obvious from the first fitting two weeks later ( we travelled to Chiang Mai and PHI PHI), at their premises, that we were in trouble. My suit was completely different from what I had ordered. I made this quite clear and was told that it would be altered to my satisfaction. My wife’s suits were far too tight.

The next two fitting, conveniently for them happened at our hotel. I suspect that they did not want us at their premises again in case we upset other innocent targets.

The night before our departure the clothes were left at reception in the same state as they has been presented at the last fitting the night before.

I rang their premises the morning of our departure and asked that someone contact us. Nobody did. I have emailed these ‘low life’s ‘ and expressed complete dissatisfaction with their product. I propose to pursue any avenue open to me to get my money back. I have made initial contact with MasterCard. They operate a system called Chargeback. However am unlikely to succeed due to lack of purchase documentation.

While my wife’s clothes might be able to be adjusted locally, at extra expense, my suit is so badly made that it will never be worn. I would have better off buying a suit in the local Mark and Spenser’s.

The whole experience nearly ruined our holidays and has left us with very bad impression of Thailand. At the very least tourists should be warned to be constantly on their guard from approaches from such ‘nice’ people and the entrapment techniques used by such tailors.  The inexperience tourist in Thailand is constantly targeted.

Ken,

This also happened to my boyfriend and I on our trip. I believe it was our first or second day there (July 1st or 2nd, 2007) when we were approached on our wat to the Grand Palace by a 'nice' local w/ suggestions on where to go. After ended up at Voglee Export Tailors and purchasing the suits we started to think we might have been scammed and looked them up online. We found out that many others had been caught up in a similar scam. Because of this we were afraid we would be shipped nothing. My credit card has already charged but I am going to attempt to dispute the charge. We'll see what happens.

I can honestly say that I just received my suits in the mail today. They look great. I got three suits (obviously with trousers), three white dress shirts and three silk ties. I paid $850.00 USD and that included shipping to my Canadian location. Although I'm sure that I could have purchased the same thing for a bit cheaper, I am very happy with Voglee Export Tailors. Then again, I photographed their store, both inside and outside. I told them not to mess with me as well, so that might be why I received exactly what I ordered.

This same thing just happened to me with Voglee tailors. I paid about US$760 for one suit, one extra pants, one long wool coat, 3 shirts and 1 tie. I realized I was completely scammed and am furious. I knew about scams in Thailand as well...can't believe I fell for this. Be careful! Don't trust anyone.

I'm with Andy on this one. I knew it was a scam for them to take us to voglee, however we got a free tour of the city with it and I love the suit I received. I still get comments from tailors here in Canada on the craftmanship of the suit. Sure it might have been a little more expensive than the cheap boutiques lining the popular tourist streets, but I also knew what I was getting into (this was 2-3 years ago now).

I am lucky. I own one old suit for weddings and funerals. I tell the barkers outside the shops that I dress just as scruffily in England as I do in Thailand. When that doesn't work I tell them that I don't need a suit as the police provide me with a uniform for work and show my warrant card. The bent establishments immediately lose interest in me, assuming (wrongly of course) that I may have connections with the Royal Thai Police. As they can read the word "police" but not "constable", I usually bump up my rank to the equivalent of at least Police Major.

Don't trust them in the slightest. Am pleased some of you are happy with your purchases but it's not worth the risk. We realised, a little too late about the scam, and got the tourst police and then Thai police involved. Wasted our last day in Thailand trying to agree some form of compensation (Voglee plus the police) - to be told we'd get money refunded on credit card - yeah right. Police not in the slightest bothered. Left with a very poor view of the Thais - we shalln't be returning.

enjoy your polyester suits! I bought a couple of "wool snd cashmere" suits from an Indian tailor on Sukhumvit soi 11 near the Ambassador. When I got them back to New York, my garment industry friends determined that the materials were (obviously, to them) very cheap polyester.
I went back the next year and raised a LOUD complaint inside the store. They told me the really didn't know what the materials were, that they only know what their suppliers told them. Since the shop is full of only cloth, that excuse suggested that they are either 1. hopelessly stupid and don't know what their own store sells, or 2. brazen liars. I go with number 2. They offered to make me another suit of any material I chose. I tried my best to pick something nice, and ended up with a another polyester suit!
Caveat emptor. I now bring my own materials, and use Perry Tailors on Silom, who serves the Thai upper class. Immaculate tailoring, and I know what the material really is!

Hey guys, I agree spams do exist in Bangkok, but the price you said you paid is not expensive if its really good quality, a lot of tailors in Silom, Khaosan mainly would say wool cashmere and give you pure polyester.. sukhumvit tailors are much better, test materials before you buy, if you just show them your lighter and pretend that you are gonna test the materials, the tailors would surely show you good materials in fear of getting caught giving you bad materials.

I was in Thailand in september, in Phuket, Patong beach. I bought a 4 suits from new mark and co. and was extremely delighted to have done a good business with them. They are not only great professionals but are very honest too. They told me what was I buying, and showed me the comparisons between wool and polyester. Surely, for I paid a little more for the wool suits but its better than wearing a polyester crap on your body. They are 100% trustable, and honest. Plus, they made me the suits in 24 hours. What else can you ask for. I paid 295 English pounds for 4 suits. I am going back there again in February. I would like to recommend all the people interested in making suits or any kind of clothes to contact them, if you want to be 100% satisfied with your clothes and service. They are located in Club andaman beach resort, in Patong beach. Cheers.

I just got three suits from Voglee, and well, they are alright. But, not exactly what I wanted...and even if they were, the worst part is the feeling that I was scammed too. I know this happens to tons of people, but still...it doesn't make me feel any less stupid. I found out only after from a friend of mine, who actually imports custom suits from Thailand, that Voglee is a scam suit maker. Oh well...now I have three suits, which I will have to wear to get my money's worth. But, unfortunately, this does not make Thailand look any better. To be honest, after living in Asia fora while, I am convinced this is a land of money hungry scam artists.

My experience with Manhattan Tailors was overall a good one.

Nice sales job (which convinced me), measurements taken nicely. I decided to go for 2 suits 5 shirts various ties and 2 spare trousers (all for less than GBP 450 - not terribly cheap but o.k. given the quality I expected)
The fitting two days later was a bit rushed and my complaints about to tight trousers were ignored. I got the final product delivered to my hotel the next day and the trousers were definitely to tight. So I took the fitting stuff (jackets, shirts etc) with me back to London and left the 4 trousers at Manhattan for changing. They tried to convince me to pay for delivery to London. Upon my refusal they changed the trousers for FREE and sent it all back to London by Airmail for FREE.

2 years later, the shirts are still fitting (really nice quality), the suits have been worn a lot (I am a banker) and show their age but I am really happy with them. I love the shirts which fit me better than any shirts I wore.

Recommendation:
- Only go to these tailors if you need a suit. If not do not go. They are good sales people, who will talk you into things.
- Take time for fitting and stick to your opinion. You have to wear the stuff.
- Do not have the delivery of the ready suits on the day of departure (like me) but a few days in advance so that you have time to check final quality.

Generally my experience has been a good one.

I just want to report, that, as a dumb backpacker, in hopes of finding some cheap suits which I need for work, I fell for the Voglee scam. They sweet talked me into buying three suits, which I have no idea what are made of. I suspect polyester, but oh well...I guess it happens. All I can say is be wary, and stay away. There are much better tailors elsewhere in Thailand...speak to real locals, not tuk tuk drivers. They are the ones that will direct you to the good stuff.

I too nearly fell for the voglee scam. It wasn't even funny, and trust my wife to see through it! And then I researched online and saw that I had saved myself both money and a big scam!!

In the end we got all our clothes at Crown Tailors on sukhumvit soi 8. Quality was good, price was great and best of all, we've got non stop compliments on how great the suits look on us!

My only advice is just NOT to use the TUK TUKs at all in Bangkok. They just CANNOT be trusted!

I also fell for the Voglee scam. After paying for the suits I searched the net at my hotel and felt victimized. Worst part is, I had such a good reputation of Thai people given how friendly the "actors" were. I live in a big city and am not too naive when it comes to scams . . . however, these guys were very good.

With that said, when I returned to Voglee for my fitting I gently mentioned that I read up on teh internet about the scam and made up this sob story about how I am a poor student, and this is alot of money to me. Also mentioned that I knew I could receive some refund by contacting the police, even though I didn't want to necessarily do so. I was able to have them make me another suit and throw in a few more shirts . . . the quality and particularly the fit seemed fine during my fitting. Let's hope the others match up!

I wish that I did my research before going to Thailand, that's what I get for trusting a distant family member who is also a tour guide!

A few weeks ago, we ordered 4 suits from Manhattan store. I am very disappointed in what we received. The suits we got in the mail are not near what we were told we were purchasing and had several craftsmanship flaws.

Below is some of the issues we discovered: 1) Men suit jackets - the back of both men jackets (black striped and solid black) were with splits on the sides. I had requested only a single slit in the back as shown at the fitting. 2) Men solid black pants - the pants were about 2 inches to short. 3) Men black striped pants: The waist on the pants is to large. 4) Men black striped pants: Do not have any button to button the pants. Duh! 5) Women's pants (both suits) - The women's pants are missing lining down to the knee as requested and as shown on the sample provided to my wife.

Guys afer reading the messages left on this site i was extremely concerned about what i had done , parting with £600 for 3, 3 piece suits a shirt a 3 ties.

I think there are several things to cover off

1. the tuk tuk guys get petrol vouchers for delivering tourists to the tailors so of course people are going to promote. thai people look aftre each other.
2. you have to be clear what you want the cut , the hang etc etc
3. do not buy if you are shipping , ensure you have time to go back and check the quality .

i visited Bangkok & was bought into the idea that i could have custom made suits. The waffle about i make suits for armani etc etc is bull shit but come on !!! The leaflets/books handed out are given away at fashion shows around the world at the end of a season so you or me could show them to anyone and say this is what i do. Even so i liked the quality of the material and thought i would give it a go. Went back the next day for a fitting where trousers on 1 suit had been done blazer on another had been done and after a few slight changes i was happy regarding size. by the way the shirt was finished and i have never had a better shirt.

Traveled around thailand for 3 weeks read the messages and started to panic.

Went back to Bangkok and went to pick up suits . They were ok but on each one there were minor errors i.e twisted material on waist coat or too much material which had disfigured a blazer.

I spoted this even in the bad light room they took me in to try on (common trick of any tailor around the world) I was very insistant on the changes i req'd and gave them 3 hrs to fix.

On return the suits were perfect.

For comparison i only where armani and hugo boss in the uk so this was very much an experiment for me to see if i could buy 3 suits for what i usually pay for 1.

As an acid test i visited a friend who is the store manager for Boss in the uk whilst wearing one of the suits , he was so impressed!!!

I absolutely love them all they fit like a glove, everyone comments on quality and asks where did i purchase from.

I have to admit my other half is a fashion designer for mens clothing so i was extremely supported in her knowledge of how a piece should be manufactured and how it should sit througout the process. I think she scared them a bit .

I come back to my first point only do it if you know exactly what you want, you can afford for it to go wrong in both cost and time to be a ble to put it right.

ps i would not order now from the uk as my expectation would be that i would need for them to do so many alterations the suit would clock up more air miles than me in my lifetime.

Hope my thoughts and comments help you out.

I'm just back from Thailand and had very similar experiences to the others who've posted here: I, too, was approached on the street with the story about it being the last day for a special promotion for tourists to buy "Armani-style" suits, a story later verified at a wat by a young lawyer I just happened to meet while my tuk-tuk driver was indisposed. I ended up at Voglee Export Tailors (the address is 121-123/125 Prachatipatai Road, Bangkhunprom, Pranakorn, Bangkok 10200 Thailand, Tel 0-2629-2219 or 0-2629-2279) where I dealt with a very skilled salesman. I had more than a little buyer's remorse after leaving the store--I certainly didn't plan to make such a large purchase while in Bangkok (1 or 2 suits, great, but 5 suits and 8 blouses! Good grief, Jan, really!). I arranged to have the clothes delivered to my hotel on my very last day in Asia though I was arriving late at night and leaving very early the next morning--a truly nerve wracking situation, but it was the only opportunity to take the clothes with me. But I must say, Voglee Export Tailors delivered the goods just as agreed, nicely packaged and on hangers in Voglee suit bags. The garments I received are beautifully made and fit me perfectly. As the "attorney" told me, the suits came to roughly $200 each and blouses about $32 each, which would be very good prices for off-the-rack clothing--extraordinarily reasonable for custom-tailored clothes. They are beautifully detailed and finished exactly how I ordered them. It was a bit extravagant, to be sure, but no one held a gun to my head and I know I'll get a great deal of use out of these new clothes. I don't like to learn that I was quite so manipulated, but I certainly can't complain about the products.

An old friend of mine who has retired to Pattaya brought me to Next Fashion Chonburi to have a couple of suits made...I have never seen such a shameful display of poor tailoring and outright fraud as I have with these characters...At my first fitting I noticed that the material was polyester, not the wool I had paid for..they said thaqt was the material I had selected, but if I were to buy another (third) suit then they would start over and make all wool...on the second fitting they tried to get me to buy counterfeit Armani and Hugo Boss suit linings--they told me if I wanted suits without lining so be it--finally I agreed to an additional 3000 Baht for suit lining, and I warned them that I would pay no more.

Needless to say in spite of all of my additional charges and instructions about what was to be made they ended up trying to pass off two polyester suits and one wool (blend?) suit with some amazingly bad tailoring--crooked seams, mismatched buttons and holes, one suit had the pockets at least 3cm off in relation to one another --one pair of trousers had a repair in the middle of the leg which looked like a misplaced button hole!

I refused to accept the lot, and they kept trying to deliver them to my hotel--I was staying at my friend's villa so naturally this wouldn't have worked even had I been willing to give out this information.

I gave them a couple of more shots to get it right, but it was clear that they were waiting for my last day so they could force me to take them...they even suggested mailing them to me for 4000 Baht!

My friend was beside himself over the affair, and he felt since I was involved with these low-lifes on his recommendation that he should pay me all of the money I lost...Naturally I refused his money.

On my last evening I went back around 1900 by myself and they had all of my suits nicely trussed up and ready to travel...of course I opened all of the bags and found the same exact crap that they tried to pass off on me days before...Being a generally reserved person I uncharacteristically decided to make a bit of a scene, and in the span of 10 or so minutes I was able to warn off a couple of prospective customers while demanding my money back (naturally knowing full well that these Indians probably didn't have 100 Baht between them)..as am final insult I dropped everything on the floor, stepped on it and for good measure spit on it on my way out the door--again very uncharacteristic of me!

In the end the money I lost was negligible--I have lost considerably more in worse ways, and I didn't let it get in the way of the fun I had while in Thailand, or my friendship.

If you want a suit tailor made while in Thailand accept it for what it is-- a gamble. If the tailor happens to have a lot of the material you like (he probably isn't actually using the material on display in his shop) and you are an easy size to fit, you might get a nice suit. On the other hand if he is low on material, and needs cash be prepared to get something less than satisfactory made from whatever material he has on hand. If I had to do it again (which I doubt I would) I would give no more than 10% down, and I wouldn't necessarily rely on the words of others--the quality in any shop is likely very hit or miss depending on what day it is.

It would be easier for everybody who goes to Thailand on holiday to shop at a reputable business such as the BIG C aka CARREFOUR SUPERMARKETS also just called CARREFOUR which is French owned and everything is a fixed price or TESCO LOTUS which a branch of the British Tesco with Thai partners .They are found all over Thailand and are in Pattaya and Phuket Island too.You will not be ripped off there and you can even get a Tax Refund Vouchar. If you spend more than 2500 Bahts you can claim the Tax back at the Airport. Also you will pay about £5-00 or $10-00 for a good quality all cotton long sleeved shirt or less than £1-00 or $2-00 for a pair of all cotton boxer shorts. If you want a Silk Dress for your Wife or a Silk shirt for yourself the best place to shop for them in Pattaya is RUEN THAI SILK which is just opposite the Rose Garden Shopping Centre in Central Pattaya, a Long Sleeve Shirt costs about £50-00 or $100-00 made to measure.

this is written specially for alan because he has specially mentioned sikh/indian tailors.
i am also a sikh.
i know that when you are walking on a street so many people try to drag into their shops and may be from those one of them you found a sikh also so thats why you have written sikh/indian
just go in deep and see carefully after how many tailor you found a sikh dragging you in his shop.i think not more then 1 or 2%
reality is that most of the tailor shops are running by burmese and nepalese
who are living here in thailand illegally.they dont have manner how to talk and what to sell to the customer.
and you can think yourself self that even if you are getting a suit for 25 pound (which is not possible)what quality are you getting for that price.
But this i will suggest to everyone that when you ate in thailand try to ignore all these tuk-tuk who take you all these big shops for the commission of 300 baht (if you dont buy)and 30% if you buy from that store

In Pattaya, the tailor shops all appear to run by Indians. Their aggressive manner has been criticized for ages, but that aspect of the way they do business doesn't really bother me -- they're easy enough to ignore. What does bother me, and what I feel qualifies as a scam is the fact that they don't actually do any of the tailoring work. When a customer is "dragged" into one of their stores and sold a suit or other item of clothing, they take the material(s) that have been selected and go down to one of the many "sweat shops" located near the parking lot of the Tuk Com computer complex. There you can see who does the actually cutting and sewing -- Thais of all ages and description with their sewing machines, working in dingy little shops -- evidence of the pittance they are paid by the Indian tailor shop owners. For this reason, I never give these shops any business. Their method of earning a living seems parasitic to me.

I got "scammed" into going to a few suit shops. The kid on the street who told us about the "special one week only open to public" sale, also had the curtesy of mapping out our entire day, tourist spots, temples, markets, historical locations etc. Bought the suits from the store he recommended, didn't overpay, but definately not happy with the quality. I prefer my off the racks from JC Penney. However, I did end up buying about 20 shirts from Manhattan Tailors. I paid about $25 each. I can honestly say these are the best quality shirts I have ever owned with the minor exception that some of the buttons needed to be replaced. Perfect fit, great material. Everyone I have spoken to agrees, custom suits from Thailand...ehhh, its hit or miss...Shirts however always great if you can bargain them down to a reasonable price.

Absolutely buy clothes in Thailand, good quality and prices, but never, never, ever deal in any way with people who approach you on the streets, especially in Bangkok, no matter who they say they are; they'll all con men. I've been there many times and have heard of all these scams and many more.

Le Nakornsawan is definetely NOT the best, opposite to what simon says. It's just another expensive rip-off as any other described here.
I'm not going to bore you with my story as it's pretty much the same as what many people obviously experienced. If I tell this story to any of my friends, I cannot believe it myself. I travel around the world for about 10 years now and I was pretty sure I was smart enough to keep away from this.
The only thing I can say is that it's almost a network of contacts that tried to trick me into this trap. I was advised by 3 (independent) people of who one was an official tourist guide that gave me some decent other tips, so I trusted him. Maybe he was not aware of the other people in this scam, I cannot tell for sure, but it ended anyway by a tuk tuk driver bringing me to this rip-off tailor. A very big shop, many other tourists were buying too, I must say it looked really convincing and everything I got to see was good quality and perfectly finished. The next day however, off course only few hours before returning home, I got something completely different to see. None of the tissues I had chosen matched with what they delivered, the finishing was very very sloppy and it all looked very cheap. I'm not an expert, but I know I can distinguish quality from rubbish. I bought 2 suits, 2 shirts and 1 coat for 34000 Baht, all so-called cashmere, which it certainly isn't! Upon delivery, I asked some help from my hotel's concierge and he instantly confirmed that this tailor is not to be trusted. Unfortunately I could not reject the order as it was already paid in advance while the form I signed mentioned 'agreement upon payment'. The concierge told me this is not the case with legitimate tailors who deliver quality for a decent price where you can always get between 50% and 100% of your payment back in case you're not satisfied. I even had to be lucky that they at least delivered something that comes (not so) close to what was promised.
Anyway, the only advise I can give is also mentioned often on this page: if you don't need it, then stay away and don't buy. If you're looking for some good bargain, then ask help from trusty people, never pay in advance and carefully read what you sign. I know it's all pretty basic, but if you don't know the language, the local customs and especially this kind of traps, then you're just another victim in their eyes.

I fell for this 12 years ago - not exactly a new scam - the place is still there in Sukhamvit Soi near the Thai Business Hotel. Had the fitting and ordered two suitgs with extra trousers and some womens suits for my mother (before I was married). Only onea sumit was complete - the extra trousers missing - the other suit was minus its trousers. The materials were right and in the style I ordered. The one suit fell apart in just a few months - my normal suits last years (off the peg from M&S and Next) with cycling between them. Send some Thais to complain, but they didn't get anywhere as the shop said they sent it all. All the women's stuff was crap. Only cost me $99USD, so wasn't too worried, but once bitten. Now I get my good clothes at department stores and kicking about in clothes from, the market.

Similar experience at King International/King's International on Khao San Rd. "Japanese Silk" shirts I bought fell apart immediately and I found the material to be polyester (burn test). Fit isn't great either. Too tight in the back & no ability to move your arms.

I more or less knew this was a gamble tho so it was all part of the experience. I'll buy clothes here in Canada in the future. I've found quality wool suits for a similar price here anyway.

In doing research on my Thai Gem Scam of June 2000, I noticed that the address of AAA Jewelry 1999 LTD., 121-125 Prachatipatai Rd., Bangkunprom, Bangkok 10200 is now part of the tailor scam. It is probably the same group of touts luring tourists as they did for years for jewelry. From some time in 1999 through at least June, 2000 the business at the above address was known as AAA Jewelry, then it was known as Marin Gems through March 2002, then it was known as Dheves Gems through January 2003, then it was known as Kawin Gems Company through December 2003. Since that time it has been a tailor shop but I bet the same group of touts attract the tourist to the shop.

I recently bought a tailor made suit in Bangkok, manhantan tailors, the suit was ok with one shirt and 2 ties it cost 9000 baht. But I can buy a suit with better material off the peg in UK and pay less. So its probably not worth the hassle to buy in Thailand when its cheaper and easier to buy at home.

Do NOT do business with Le Nakornsawan for any custom made clothing. They are part of a major SCAM operation.

You will end up getting your way there via a scam, often someone on the street will offer help if your around the Kings Palace or needing some help finding something. They often tell you its a special day where you can buy direct from the manufacturer, or you will get some unreal deal.

They just deal with sweat shops and dont deliver what you order.

In my case I bought a suit, extra jacket, shirt and tie

I paid $850 buks then read about the scams, called them 2 hours later to cancel and they would not deal with me. I had the hotel call them and speak Thai to cancel the order. Later visa would not assist me as I had signed their papers saying satisfaction is accepted at payment and the suit had not even been made

I did not get my goods and they kept the $850

Stay away from Le Nakornsawan in Dustit Bankok 10300

Narai Fashion in Silom Road near Narai Hotel are cheats and thieves. I ordered a suit, another pair of pants and 2 blouses, my friend the same. When they weren't ready we paid extra to have them posted. Many phone calls, emails, visits from travelling friends and 22 months later, I collected my goods... not without another 6 or so visits, threats, etc. My friend had lost her receipt and was not so lucky. If I had not returned to Bangkok, I would still be waiting too.

It's well known these days that most, though not all, Bangkok tailors do a pretty dismal job. And yet some newcomers still fall for the spiel. The shop's fast-talking front men are just that - the real tailoring is done in factories by very low-paid employees. With shops like Primark (yes, I know, Primark have been accused of using cheap labour in devbeloping nations!!!) in the UK offering decent off-the-peg suits, shirts etc at such low prices nowadays - and there are plenty of more expensive alternatives - it's amazing anyone bothers with 'Thai' tailors. Friends of mine who have lived in Thailand for decades buy their clothes while on holiday back home.

At the end of the day, the way to go is NOT, I repeat, NOT NOT NOT fall for these scams. Do not believe the taxi/tuk tuk drivers, and DO NOT NOT NOT buy from the shops they take you to.

Do the research. I Promise you scribe, there are good "Thai" tailors out there. Ones that make clothes that are a lot cheaper then back in the UK. You just have to find one and you'll be happy to stick with them for all your future clothes.
