Unsafe deposit box
Tuesday, 08 January 2008
Have just come across your excellent site. Congratulations

I have passed through Bkk on a regular basis for the past 8 years and have somehow managed to avoid most of the scams you cover, although sometimes by the skin of my teeth! On my last visit in Feb/March there was an occurrence that annoyed me at the time and still bugs me when I think of it.Scam or not? I`m not really sure but it certainly put a downer on that visit to Thailand
.
Returning from a trip to a friends family in Prasat on route for Chiang Mai we decided to spend a few days in Bkk and made a phone reservation with an hotel I`d stayed at before  in Sukumvit Soi19 called  Jimmy`s  Regent House.

On arrival the name had changed, there was now a spar, bar and a resto. All for the better I thought.

Having checked in I decided to leave most things pilferable in the lobby safe deposit box, whilst I punched in my access code the reception staff theatrically turned their backs so as not to see my magic number. The same procedure the next day when I unsuccessfully attempted to open the box -- guess I`d made an error -- but Hey Presto no problem, the management had an emergency override code and the box pops open!

Everything OK until check-out and I open my box to find I`m suddenly 500€ lighter. Cash gone but passport, i-Pod, cards, tickets etc. thankfully still there, guess I was lucky.

I would say I speak Thai fairly well and understood that this was certainly not the first time that this had happened, a fact which the owner -- although very sympathetic--strenuously denied. The  Tourist Police were predictably useless.

Guess next time I`ll transfer straight to Don Muang and give the City of Angels a miss!!!

This is the first time I heard this kind of issue. I always prefer to leave my passport/cash at safebox.

It is a quick way to exit the country if you do not have your passport with you when a Thai police ask for it... Always carry it in Thailand, or at least a photocopy.

I think putting valuables for storage to hotel's safe isn't a good idea at all. Why not use a hidden pocket below your shirt. Things like laptops or MP3 players you can place in your bag. Besides, why carry cash? You can use your credit card at ATMs for withdrawals (be careful to use only ATMs located inside banks, not somewhere on the street at Thailand is notorious for credit card fraud).

This is not surprising. I had a similar incident at a "hotel" I was booked into. I was fortunate, nothing was taken, but I had made a unexpected quick return to the hotel to pick up my wallet and they forgot to close the safe. (idiots). I must have startled them and they only had enough time to call up and warn their accomplice. On the next pass, my code did not work but someone who was just seconds away just happened to have the key in hand and opened it.

Three trips ago we stayed at the Sawadee hotel Pattaya Soi 10.
They have one of those safe box systems where they have a key and you have a key and you need both keys to gain entry to your box.
I never checked my cash wedge until I got back to the airport for a flight to Loa and low and behold, there was a $100 bill missing and I certainly didn't loose it.
If I'd noticed it at the hotel I would have insisted that the security tape was rewound and would have made a right scene if they didn't have it!
A member of staff obviously has copies of the other keys.

the room safes are no better, they can be opened by bypassing the keypad with a magnet held to the side of the safe ( fail safe for the owners in case you loose the combination)

There is another method for getting into the safe boxes in hotel rooms that people should be aware of. Every time you enter your code, you are leaving finger prints on the keypad. It is possible to use a spray on the keypad that will "highlight" those fingerprints and allow a person to see your secret code. You can stop this by wiping your fingers over all the keys several times, or wiping the keypad off with a cloth, or placing a clear plastic film over the keys when you enter your code to eliminate the fingerprints. I was shocked when someone explained this to me, but it is very simple to do. And simple to solve. Not sure how to stop the magnet approach :(

Investment is really risky. Federally insured and interest-accruing, a certificate of deposit (CD) is a popular personal investment choice. A CD differs from a savings account in that most CD types do not allow you to take your money out early - unless you do not mind paying a stiff penalty. For those who want to explore opening a Certificate of deposit, here's a guide to the best Certificate of deposit possibilities accessible. If you invest right, you will not need to take out a cash loan anytime soon.
