World Federal Travel in Bangkok
Saturday, 18 April 2009

I'm not sure if this is the kind of thing that you're website really covers (as most of the material seems to involve street scams), but I'd like to submit this to you guys anyways.

I recently arrived in Bangkok about a week ago. I knew I was eventually going to further traveling all throughout Thailand. After a day or two of looking, I  wondered into a travel agency by the name of World Federal Travel just off of Phisanulok Road, not far from Khao San. I took a look at this tourist package that they had for me (which included a trip to Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Phi Phi). The T.A.T had said that prices on trips to Chiang Mai were typically around 27,000 baht. The whole package this World Federal Travel tried to sell me came about to just over that. It sounded a bit expensive, but considering everything that was laid out, I thought I might as well shell out the cash and try to enjoy myself.

As it turns out, my bank card wasn't working at the time. I was then told I could make a "deposit" to hold my spot. I made a 400 USD deposit which I knew I shouldn't have done, but at this point I had every intention of going on this little packaged trip and figured it really couldn't hurt.

Well, as it turns out, I had less money back home than I had realized due to some outstanding bills I hadn't accounted for and just decided that paying for the whole planned trip was too much and it'd be better to just find what I want on my own. Well, as you can probably already guess, the money I had given them upfront wasn't treated as a deposit despite the fact that it says "deposit" and I was told any kind of refund was impossible when a I went to speak with them a couple days later. Now, this is bad enough but it's something I should expect for being reckless with my money in a foreign country. What happened next is I guess the main reason I'm writing you.

The manager whom I spoke to on two separate occasions was very peevish and condescending toward me about the whole thing. Even going as far as to call me names and accuse me of doing things that I wasn't doing (such as yelling). I may be dumb with my money, but I'm sensible enough to know that yelling in my situation won't help. Attempted reasoning was really something the man had distain for and outwardly showed to me in ways that left me dumbfounded such as yelling and name-calling. He was determined to call the shots with my own money.  Now, I have given this man 400 USD and he says I *must* book something. I have no choice and there is nothing I can do. So, after going back and forth, he says if I don't book something right now at the very moment I'm talking to him that he will give me nothing for my money and just simply throw me out of his office. So I end up telling him something out of fear of losing my entire deposit. I tell him I just want to go to Phuket.

He only gives me three days in Phuket but insists the hotel I'm staying at is a "good hotel". Yeah, whatever. I asked to see further information or perhaps other hotel options to which he flat out refuses. So, I get this three day thing to Phuket and of course return to my hotel in Khao San to research the hotel further only to find that the price of the hotel only costs about 1,000 baht a night. It doesn't appear to be that close to the beach, either. It's a big joke.

So, for approximately 13,600 baht (I think my math's right), I get a maybe a 3,600 baht value. I understand he has to hike up the prices a bit for his "services," but for them to just make off that much of my money as a licensed business really has put a sour taste in my mouth.

I tried going to both the T.A.T and the Office of Tourism Development (who didn't seem to have a decent English speaker in the office so conveying the exact nature of the situation proved impossible).  Neither proved effective and I really didn't expect that there was much they could do or else this guy at World Federal Travel wouldn't act the way he did in the first place.

I'm writing at the very least to warn people to even be weary of licensed tour businesses in Thailand. From what I've seen, that license is a pure joke. I really am embarassed I even allowed myself to be put in this situation. As I said, I thought they were closely affiliated with the T.A.T and thus thought my money was safe. I was dead wrong.

P.S.

Does anyone at your website know of any other resource through which I can report this business to and at the very least give some bad marks about World Federal Travel to some Thai tourist officials. I still haven't taken the planned trip to Phuket that they "set me up" with. Any information on how I can damage this guy's reputation while I'm still on holiday in Thailand would be much appreicated. Thank you for your time.

To be frank, I would give most of these travel agencies a "wide berth" and particularly down K/san road. Prob better to get ripped off slightly in a 3/4 star hotel but at least your complaints would be quite off putting to other farang!

Sometimes Thais like to haggle over the price of things and will set it artificially high especially if they are mis-informed that all farangs are multi-millionaires with the income levels of hollywood film stars, for instance starting out at double what it should be.

Do your research beforehand and try and bargain down to what you feel is right to pay. You could get a bargain and importantly you wont get ripped off.

This isnt being a cheapskate its getting value for your money and in many cases its the expected practice.

Whilst bargaining if your trader is in good spirits, smiling and saying "mai dai" then the deal is probably real and hes trying to get down to a agreeable price.

If he is aggressive and rude from the outset hes a scammer and you should be prepared to walk away before it gets nasty.

The idiots make themselves known by their behaviour.

Yep, I had the same sort of problem with this company last month.

They charged me roughly double what it should have cost to do chiang mai, ko samui and ko pangnan. Thank god I only booked two weeks with them!
To be fair, I should have known that the price was way too high but the guy was so convincing and everything just happened so fast! He did lie about qute a few things, like the quality of the hotel rooms and the exact locations of some of the hostels. But it could have been much much worse. We got everything that he promised even if it wasn't up to the standard he told us when he sold it.

Lesson learn't , never trust anyone in a travel agent especially when they're linked to koh san road!
Everyone I met who booked stuff with this company is scammed i'm not sure how they're getting away with it tbh.

We stumbled upon them without any intention of using a travel agent, scoped it out, and decided that while, sure, they're probably more expensive then doing it on your own, they promise seamless segues in the form of transportation links. Guess what? That's exactly what we got. We had drivers and taxis there waiting for us at the start of each connection from airport to guest house or bus to boat. We had nothing but an excellent experience, and translating the cost from Bhats to dollars, $15-$20 more per day pales in comparison with the hassles of scam tuk-tuks and taxis.

As to the original "complainer", he realized that he should never have put $400 dollars down without being pretty damn sure, but what he points out as his principle complaint is his apparent unawareness of and sensitivity to that part of Southeast Asia's cultural differences and how the Thai people may perceive or react to people, especially foreigners, being demonstrative. What they might consider "yelling" along with body language, to us may be just slightly raising your voice. Our experience throughout Thailand and Cambodia was that natives never raised their voice, and in a crazy city of cars, moto's, taxis, tuk-tuks weaving crazily in and out and creating extra lanes where none exist, no one blares their horn, only brief toots to make others aware to make space. Whatever. This company treated us very well before and during, and we an excellent experience.

WFT is really an organisation that has ripped me off. They misuse the name of T.A.T.. They say they are acting on behalve of T.A.T. and that gives you the impression that it is a good organisation. They also use the trick of a tuck tuck driver that brengs you for BTH 10-20 to a temple. The visit to he temple is free of charge because of a celebration day of Buddha. The tuck tuck driver gets money from the government. After visiting the temple they will bring you everywhere you want to go free of charge. In the temple you meet a nice man, in our case coming from Singapore,he said, who is interested in your plans of travelling in Thailand. Then he says that he travelled a lot in Thailand and that he always let T.A.T. arrange his trips. He also did so yesterday, he said, and he got a discount of 30 % because of the festival day of Buddha. This guy looks very independent, so you think that it is a good advise. Then the tuck tuck brings you to WFT. In this office is also a man , that seems to be very nice, called Johny, who is telling you to arrange everything for you for a very good price. We wished to visit some islands in the south of Thailand. We went to Krabi and afterworths Ko Lanta, Ko Phi Phi, Ko Samui,Ko Phanang and Ko Tao. We booked accommodation for 22 nights. The price per night was BTH 2.500. Johni showed us pictures of all the accommodation that looked very good. When we arrived the quality of the accommodation was very low, or they gave us the worst room available in stead of the best room. The managers of the accommodation said that they received money for the quality we got. Of course it is my own fault that did not had a specification of the costs of the whole trip. But the quality was so low according to the price that I paid, that I really have been cheated bij WFT. I paid I think BTH 37.000 to much of 22 days. This is no fair business but cheating. During our trip I met a lot of other people who has been chated more or less the same way. The police or the government of Thailand should doe something about this.

The same thing happened to us. We arrived in Bangkok december the 5th (King birthday). The next day, we decide to visit the Grand Palace. On our way, we meet a nice man saying that he is working for T.A.T and he want to give us good advice. He mentionned that the Grand Palace was close until 13h because of a special pray for King's birthday. Then he proposed two nice temples and ask a tuk tuk to take us over there for free because of the festivities. At the second temple, an other man came to us saying that he is a university teacher. He explain that many crime happened in Thailand in the past years so the TAT want to make good price to have more visitor and have a better reputation. After, the tuk tuk driver took us to this travel agency...we needed airplane ticket to go to Chiang Mai so we decided to look for the price. During the discussion, I ask many times if the trip is refundable because we were metting a friend over there and we didn't know if he will agree to do this tour. He always say yes and even showed me on the map were was there agency in Chaing Mai (in fact, he show me the TAT office). He sayed that we could trust him because this agency was supervised by the gouvernement. We found that the price was expensive but we deal a lot so we finally thought it was a normal price. When we arrived in Chiang Mai, the hotel was lot cheaper than what we saw on the picture and the people over there were not nice. An other lady arrived in the same time than us with a voucher from this travel agency and she was upset too. We decided to ask for a refund but they didn't want and show me a little inscription in the bottom of the bill saying :No refund. It is strange but this part of the bill was fold...so it was not possible for me to see this inscription at the travel agency...We had to argue on the phone with the manager and he was laughing at me. We went to see TAT office and the police tourist but they couln't do anything for us.
It was a very bad experience and I don't recommend to visit Thailand. They always try to take our money, we have to argue all the time to pay reasonable price. Go to Cambodia. People are nice and true.

hello, me and my wife wanted to do some visiting and ended up in a tuk tuk that told us he would give us a circuit of a few temples for about 100 bht, we agreed and were taken to a buddhist temple that seemed questionable, in it we met a french guy who told us that this t.a.T world federal travel had given him a great deal and he always booked with them. He seemed a bit solitary but since we are french as well, we took his word for it. Next thing, tuk tuk took us there without us asking and we were taken on 50,000 bht one week scam to krabi, koh phi phi, ao nang & phuket.... the hotels were supposed to be a 5 star hotels they are not even 2, the rooms are terrible and we are stuck with a sour feeling. Why havent they done something about this one agency?

twats! I am so glad that I looked on the interenet and read these comments before i booked my trip. Same thing happened to us today. We were told by a thai man that we could get a free tourist map and information at a police center over the road. So naturally looking for more information on Bangkok, seeing as we had only arrived in Bangkok the day before and thinking that we could trust the police for reliable information went over to get our free map.
We got chatting to a man who seemed really nice and who gave us alot of information about scams in thailand and who gave us plenty of information about the area. When we asked about how to get to the grand palace he told us that it was shut and that we should go and see another temple, but that we should go to the TAT office to see about trustworthey tours through thailand. Before we knew we were in a tuk tuk and inside the TAT centre discussing trips to chang mai. Our trip came to 18,000 BHT for two of us but it all seemed too good to be true.
So so glad I came on the internet to research this before hand, can not believe we were in the same office as the one that is mentioned on here!!! This should be highlighted big time, especially if it is conjunction with the police, this is outrageous !!!!!!

i just got scammed, i want to kill myself. I don't know what's happened, but today me and my girlfriend are going on a three week trip with these fuckers. We paid 49,500 for god knows what, about 580 euro each. I have so much to say:

first, i told myself trust noone in Thailand. I heard of the gem scams and the like, and had read that noone helps you here for no good reason. NOONE. NOONE.

Second, we were outside the police station beside ko san rd, and we got dragged in to the information centre. Sure i said 'here is safer than some place on the street' and was helpde by a man named mon. he had crap english but was remarkably friendly. Again, we were in the fucking police station.

Thirdly, and i guess this relieves me of my harboured guilt, he mentios the riots (after finding out we had just arrived, naturally - they do love knowing everyhting these people) So we said 'fuck it, lets go elsewhere and come back to bakgkok in a month or so'

Fourthly (i'm stuck with this format now) we were advised get out of bangkok, to natuarally beware of the scammers, so he gets us a tuk tuk, flaged down (what a system) and tells us to go to the TAT office for proper information. OK, sure. GOD< how outrageously friendly. Na, nothing dodgy at all about this.

We have a great ride to the office (overwhelmed by excitment and the sense of adventure)

Next the pain begins:

As soon as we went in we were led as if by god or something to a free desk. it was likea vaccum, with the Lisa there alert and somehow just knowing (without asking us anything) exactly what we wanted to hear. There were at least three other groups of tourists in there. My gut says '' funny how that was SO seamless'' but i proceed anyway, sure i never get scammed....

As they know we think they are an (or the) official TAT office, they plan out a three week itinerary. I am relieved. How nice the thails have a place to help pople get around and (yes, i said it) avoid being scammed. And all for the good of us helpless tourists. Such nice people. to do that.

For some reason i lost, i actually lost, my inherent(an a touch wankish) nature of asking for all information about everything, and became a puppy, intregued by the wonderful lisa, a chatty thai-chinese lady with good english. I know how incredibly stupid i am but i thought it was all legit.

simple formula: police information protecting citizens (demonstrations and riots) advice (TAT) and TUK to TAT office = soul destroying scam.

I estimate we paid at least 50-60 percent more than we needed, not to mention being fuckin stuck with this trip itinerary. there is actually more but i can't speak of it anymore.

well, it all begins today, christ, As soon as i left the office i knew i was scammed, and even going into the office i knew the slightest thing was amiss.

Don't hate me, i was played by an excellent swindle, a ''scam'' is probably worse, seeing as we will get a shit, budget version of a luxury priced trip. They specialise in misinformation.

I hope it will be adequate. but it will be shit, I know. I am an idiot but when police are involved it is harder to spot the holes (though they are there if you care to see them).the biggest hole being me handing over 49,500 bath to a person when an hour before i was getting a cocktail!

In a few months this will make a good story

Hi!
omg just read through your comments... i am afriad we have been scammed..today!
basically we meet a thai guy who told us to go to the cop shop for a map.. really nice man called wicard gave us a map, directed us to temple and to tat.. where all the thai people go when they visit and got us a tuk tuk. said it would be 60bt. the tuk man was lovely we had a great time and then he landed us down to tat. this man managed to arrange a whole 1 month itinrey for us and psuhed us to pay now.. he suggested 1400 euro.. then 1,000.. we said that was too much "whats your budget tel me you can trust me" he gave us a plan and hassled us for deposit to book flights... we stoppidly gave 2000 bt.. and he has some heavy called taxi mr sammy colecting us at 11am tomorrow to arrange the rest. he wouldnt let us pay tomorrow.. said he had to bok flights.. how is he going to book flights without our passport?? so we are going back tomorrow and will not be doing any trip with him.. instead he can use our 2000 bt to book our flights to chang mai. that should cover it.

as for the tuk tuk man. im really fooked off that he was involved. i bought him a bottle of water and gave him 140 bt instead of 60bt. i felt sorry for him u no.

damn it!!!

Same story. Nice guy, giving us tourism tips, and eventually telling us that governmental agencies are better than other. Then tuktuk comes, so we have some doubts.

Tuktuk brings us to this temple, then this lonely French guy comes and tells us about his trip. Conversation is slowly directed to agencies, he tells us that there is TAT which is close and offers good prices. We are French as well, why should we have had doubts?

Then, move to the TAT and were gently manipulated by the nice woman. Finally we are now at the 3rd day of the trip, we have many vouchers but we have discovered that we have paid 50-60% more than the actual service. Fuck them, we will only use travel and add money to pay accommodation.

Nice honeymoon!

We have experienced the same story, where we meet this nice guy from Singapore (Andy - which probably is not his right name!!!) at a temple where he asks questions and tells a good story that he works for Skanska (please note that we come from Denmark, and Skanska is a Scandinavian company!), has colleagues in Aarhus and Vejle, lives in London and bla bla... and "by the way if you want to travel around in Thailand, I can recommend an official TAT office, where you don't pay for all the expenses to the agents, and exactly today the 31 January you will get further 30% discount because it is the last day in the month where Buddha is celebrated. The tuk-tuk driver will gladly bring you there because he will get 5 liters of gas”.
So we went there, and we have now learned that it was a fake TAT-office even though there was a TAT logo (not the official) outside the office. The name of the travel agency is WORLD FEDERAL TRAVEL CO. LTD., 25/11 Pitsanulok Road, Dusit, Bangkok 10300 Thailand. Here we met this nice woman Nadia (which probably is not her right name!!!) and she told the same story about the official TAT-offices, which have the direct contact to the hotels and don’t use any agents, who will ask for commission.
She came up with a total price for a 22 days long trip. We asked what the average price was for the hotels per night, but she never answered and we were so stupid not to ask again. We paid approx.. 117.000 Baht and now we have calculated after checking on the internet, that the total price for our trip should be about 60.000 Baht!!!!!!
We are on the trip now – but the hotels are mittle-budget hotels. We have been saving up for this holiday a whole year – our wishes were to have a kind of a luxury trip in Thailand – and it has ended like a nightmare!
We will recommend everybody travelling in Thailand not to answer to any questions asked by any person you meet in the streets of BANGKOK – in that way they don’t learn about your plans, and they quickly find out that you are not an interested object for them – but it is difficult – we know that for sure. If you want to answer them, tell them that you come from Greenland, have no money and have stayed in Thailand for 2 years – then we think, you will get rid of them.

Hi there. today my girlfriend and i got ripped off. first we meet this guy on the streets, gets us a government tuk tuk for 60 bath. to take us anywhere for hours...like the story above. then we go see a lucky buddha temple and a man, very nice comes in and gives the rap about T.A.T. and how it helps to have us not ripped off. the Tuk Tuk takes us to the travel agent. World Federal Travel wit a T.A.T. sign at the door. he wants to sell us package for hotel etc, but we decide to just tak the night bus to Surat Thani and a bus to Krabi and ferries to phi phi and ko lanta all for 16000 Bath, 400 Euros. I have the tickets for the night train in my hands, i see it is just a regular ticket..total rip off. its so stupid we got lured into this, because i want to shoot those guys. we even have the lonely planet, but that day we didnt look into it and did leave it in the hotel room. The whole thing involved four people, the man in thestreets, the tuk tuk driver, the man that entes the Buddha temple with us, and then finally the travel agent. I hope that will never happen again, and i am feeling so embarrassed, but i thought, hey prices must have gon up, but thats life, it just isnt so.

At above, thanks for the story, but beware, I highly advise that you dont do anything stupid. If you are caught graffiting you will pay 10 times the amount you paid for your trekking ticket, trust me. What you wrote above will do serious damage to (Pitsanaluk t.a.t office) Thai tourism.

We just payed 12,000 baht stupidly to the exact same company in the exact same office. We have just got back to the hotel and decided to check out the company (obviously we should have done this first) We both feel sick that we have basically lost almost 250GBP.

Just wanted to express my feelings regarding this. Me and my girlfriend are in SE Asia for 10 weeks, on our 3rd day in Bangkok we were on the way to some temples (walking) when we were crossing a road with a man, who stopped to walk to us, he said he worked for the government, and went on about Tuk Tuk scams and such, we said we were going to Sukhothai to him and getting a bus by ourselves, he discouraged us, stating that to book via a government is much better. He told us about the temples, TAT (or not as we discovered) and tuk tuks (yellow ones are government run -NOT, infact this is part of the scam). We visisted two small temples initially where more people were waiting to talk to us and encoruage the scam (and TAT - which is part of the scam). We eventually arrived at TAT (World federal travel) and were lured into a trip (in the route we said we wanted to do, Bangkok to Luang Prabang, with stops on the way). The man said this would cost normally 700 pounds, he said he could do it for 450 pounds (each), then 360 pounds, until he said to us (after we refused), make me an offer and i'll chat to my manager. Me and my girlfriend (stupidly, but at the time we thought this was legit, mind you this scam is played out well), wrote down 10,000 baht, which is around 200 pounds, which he accepted after speaking to the manager. All the time we had bad feelings about it, the place didnt feel right, the figure was generated randomly, and stayed the same even with changes to the itinerary, but we saw no way out. Finally we paid for the trip, thinking we had paid too much we must say, but content we were going with a government run, reputible company, however it turned out, after reading Lonely planet, and this site, we had fallen to a two year old scam. Were trying to go through our bank to cancel it, but Thai way means no refunds, so unfrotunately were stuck with the horrible feeling of going on a trip we know we have been ripped off for, we are apprehensive about the hostel (not on google) and other things, however, we wont let this ruin our trip. WARNING TO ALL THOSE GOING TO BANGKOK, DONT TAKE ANYTHING AT FACE VALUE, DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE AGREEING TO ANYTHING.

Well guys; we are also scammed by this company and our experiences with them were horrible. We booked a last minute flight to Bangkok and were not really organized what to visit; when we've met some friend some very smooth guy assisted us to help and arranged a thuk thuk for 30 bhat to visit some temple. Once there some smooth french guy is at the entrance of the temple and starts to talk with you, you know back packers under each other helping each other; he will advise you to go to a TAT agency, in our case world federal travel co.; they pretend they are the government TAT agency but they are not!!!
The office was completely full with other victims of this maffia company.
In our case it was some 30 Year old man, called himself "Tom" who ripped us off 56000 bhat for 2 flights to Ko Samui and Phuket with hotels and transfers. Back in our hotel when we finally did some check ups on the internet we found out that the real price is around 14000 baht for all this. We also had no invoice and the name of the agent who booked the flights appearing on the tickets was "Tom the travel"; when we realized we were scammed the nightmare started; hours we spent in the office to get our money back. When we warned a big group of Spanish guys to get out before it was to late they became very agressive. We phoned non stop the tourism police but every time some call center guy said all officers were occupied. When we said we were phoning the police the people of the agency laughed and said they were all bribed and that if we were not carefull they were going to phone the police.
Eventually after a lot of huzzle we could come back the next day to sit with Tom around the table; what followed was completely Kafka and only seen in the wildest Bangkok movies. After a while he became very agressive and started to shout and knock on the table when he saw that his threaths didn't work and we were non stop phoning the police. Outside some 3 or 4 security guys were posted. Eventually the tourism police came; he was very agressive with the agent and a few minutes later some back up came with 4 more armed tourism agents. We were for hours stuck in some small office of the agency together with the 5 cops. They said that we had signed and couldn't cancel and they started to negociate with the agency in another office; most probably the agents received sth too, but too us they were very very friendly. In the end with the help of the tourism police they cancelled our hotels and paid us back 14000 baht, still we paid 40000 bhat for 4 tickets one way with very low cost airlines and the transfers which eventually appeared to be cancelled. Nevertheless we did everything we could to get sth back and we had, but I don't recommend to do it because afterwards we realized how dangerous it was and for days we were paranoia about it. Be very carefull in Bangkok and don't trust anybody!! Not even an European, Aussie, Kiwi, South American or American!!

What a pity for Thailand that this company WORLD FEDERAL TRAVEL still excists!!!!
I have tried to complain about this company through the homepage of tourist police, but there is just a photo of the King!!!! Scammed again!!! Then I wrote to the Thai Embassy in Denmark - but no action from their side.
I will once again urge EVERYBODY who wants to travel to Thailand to do their homework and DO NOT go to the so-called TAT office (WORLD FEDERAL TRAVEL) - they are a bunch of bandits - believe me!!!!!!

I am living in Thailand for 6 months and recently had 2 friends come to stay. Before they got to me they had 2 nights in Bangkok and unfortunately, having never been to Thailand/Bangkok before they fell for this ridiculous scam. These cowboys prey on trusting farang who have come to this country to see the beauty of it and unfortunately they end up leaving with a bitter taste of these con artists in their mouths instead of wonderful memories.

My friends have saved up for months to come on this trip and can ill afford to be ripped off like this. It makes me feel sick to my stomach that these people are allowed to just get away with doing this time and time again. For some reason these disgusting low life creatures believe that all westerners are loaded and have no qualms whatsoever in taking them for everything they have.

My friends paid 450GBP for transfers and a hotel on Phi Phi that would have only cost around 150GBP if they had of waited and arranged it once they had gotten to me.

Fortunately I believe in Karma...According to Buddhist theory, each time a person acts there is quality of intention at the back of the mind and it is that quality rather than the outward appearance of the action that determines the effect. If one appears to be benevolent but acts with greed, anger or hatred, then the fruit of those actions will bear testimony to the fundamental intention that lay behind them and will be a cause for future unhappiness.

Lets hope that they all get what is coming to them.

I for one will be posting information on these disgusting low life scum as far and wide as possible, and believe me World Federal Travel Bangkok I have a very, very big net.....
