Farang's in on gem Scam.
Tuesday, 08 July 2008

Hi a friend of mine was scammed by a English couple after striking up a conversation at a bar in Phuket,They seemed genuine and came across as a really nice couple, It was my friends first time in Thailand and didn't know any better, They explained to them how they come to Thailand every year and how they have a awesome deal running which makes there trip pretty much free each year, now on hearing that my friend was really interested and said he would love to travel for free and asked how they do it (took the bait hook line and sinker) they explained that they had met a gem dealer while on holidays 5 years ago and they come back and see him every time they come to Thailand. They said they were worried at first about all the scam's but another nice couple had introduced them to him.

They said they had Purchased some Diamonds and also different type of stones and when they returned to the UK they sell them for up to 3 times what they paid.

Now on hearing this my friend thought wow I can holiday for free and also make some extra money, he was still a little skeptical because it sounded to good to be true but the couple then asked if he would like to come with them while they went and collected there jewels for this year.

so he went along just to watch they met a well dressed guy in a suit who spoke good English, he watched them hand over a wad of money and also got some certificates, They introduced my friend to the guy and he had a chat with him.

the couple then pulled him aside and showed him the diamonds he said they looked good, the couple then got a phone call and said they had to go some problem they had to fix up and left a number and hotel on a piece of paper and said to call them if he wanted to catch up.

My friend went back spoke with they guy a little longer and then ended up purchasing $1000 worth of diamonds and returned home with them, When taking the Diamonds to a jeweler in his home country he was told they are made of glass and hope he didn't pay for them...

I don't know how this couple ended up working with Thai Scammers but its not good.!!

I AM SORRY TO HEAR WHAT YOU HAVE EXPREIENCED. I AM A GEM DEALER FROM U.S. WHO TRAVELS TO THAILAND 4-5 TIMES A YEAR. AS A RULE OF THE THUMB YOU ARE ALWAYS BETTER OFF BUYING GEMS & JEWELRY IN YOUR RESPECTED COUNTRY FROM AN ESTABLISHED COMPANY. THIS WILL ELIMINATE THE FEAR OF BUYING A SYNTHETIC PRODUCT. REMEMBER JEWELRY IN THESE COUNTRIES (THAILAND, INDIA, SRILANKA, HONG KONG, ETC) IS TAX FREE BUT NOT PROFIT FREE.

There are Farangs working with gem scammers in Bangkok as well. These bastards will do anything to get money to stay in Thailand including mercilessly defrauding their own countrymen.

If you meet these scammers and if you are an american citizen, then try to film it.
Try to find out his name,or ask him his identification.
Then send this information to the american FBI.

Same thing happens in other countries - foreigners working with a local . Don't ever make fast friends with anyone who trys to get money out of you for ANYTHING. Usually these people have addiction problems, and they don't give a rat's ass as long as they can fund their drug / alcohol habit.

Bastards, these are seriously selfish disrespectful moronic individuals. If these people sat down next to me and started that whole scamming speech, i would seriously be very tempted to punch them, it makes me so mad hearing about this, seriously. What goes around comes around though and that at least is true.
