Friendship Bridge scam

Just after you get through Laos immigration on the Laos side of the bridge you'll be approached by several people offering you a taxi to Nong Khai. They will say it is a long way and offer a price of 400Thb. This is a complete rip-off as the journey is about 2km. Take the 15Thb bus across the bridge and then get a tuk-tuk after Thai immigration and past the carpark (more scammers here) for 40 or 50Thb.

Jake, I live just by the bridge, and the bridge is about 4km from Nong Khai and is 1.2km long... The Lao capital of Vientiane is about 20km from the bridge... yes the bus is of course better, but many times the buses are late etc etc or over crowded so sometimes collectively it can be to your benefit to pool resources to the town. Sure there are scammers, but there are also some really good people out there willing to help you. I too after many years even from Tesco Lotus get scammed by tuk tuks, you would think they would learn and then you get the good ones, just have to be vigilent! The biggest scam is the 30$ US visa into Laos! one way of generating millions of bucks of foreign curency I guess!

A 9km link is to be built from Thanaleng to Vientiane.

The fare on an air-conditioned passenger train is 50 baht per trip, 30 baht on a second-class train and 20 baht for a third-class seat. Passengers wanting to cross the border to Laos must show a border pass or passport to officials.

Lao visa on arrival is not free, but it is definitely not a scam. Lao officials were always accurate in giving exact change and writing the receipt for the full amount (i.e. you can pay with a $100 bill and rest assured you'll get correct change).

Quite unlike Myawaddi, Burma (official fee $10, but they only take 500 baht -- $15) or Poipet, Cambodia (official fee $20, rarely accepted).

Let's not even start talking about most "civilized" countries (e.g. USA, UK, Australia), where visa fee at the embassy is on the order of $100, and no, you DO NOT get a refund if they refuse you (which they do often).

From Bridge to Vietntianne, it is about 20 minutes. There may be a cheap bus, but hiring a private taxi will always be more expensive. I always pay 300 THB for this journey.

From Nong Khai bus station to Bridge, or back, 60 THB should cut it for a tuk tuk.

Oh, lets not forget, for that 300 THB from Bridge to Vientianne, they'll take you to the Thai embassy (if you're just doing a visa run) and they'll wait there for you for 3 hours while you do your stuff then take you to your hotel!

Name any other country where a taxi will drive you 20 minutes and wait over 3 hours for just about $10 US!
