Scam at Malay Beach
Monday, 20 April 2009

When our longtail boat that we (3 women) hired for three hours took us to this beach, he told us that we had to pay 200baht each to lay on Malay beach!!!

We caught on to this game very quickly and refused, they continued to harass us bringing over three guys with Staff hats getting extremely agressive and telling us that we had to pay to lay on the beach or leave.  It wasn't until a group of greek gentlemen interceded that the harassing stopped and they walked away.

They try to run this scam on all boats that are privately rented. You can have the boat just drop you off BEHIND the beach and there is a walk through (don't go barefoot - rough rocks), takes 5 mins. Then for the adventure, have them pick you up in the water where they stopped and told you about the fee, and SWIM FOR IT!

It makes Maya a little more adventurous and the swim is easy. It's pretty salty in that area so you will be quite buoyant. You'll be happy you did it later. It's one thing to sit on the beach or frolic in shallow water, but to swim across all of Maya Bay is a memory you won't forget. It's all about the adventure, right?
