TEFL Scam
Saturday, 25 April 2009

Hello I am a 69 years young retiree from Australia, well educated and with time on my hands. I went to a school here in Jomtien to volunteer to teach English. Was informed I,d need a TEFL cert. A local company advertizing their TEFL course approved by MOE said they had a course starting on 22/9 and for 23000 b I could have my cert on  the 26th, another foolish old farang got scammed.  After I started the course the TRUTH came out,at the end of the week I would only have a TRAINING cert, to get " The Guaranteed Job and Work Permit " I would need to do 80 hours teaching; then go to Laos for type b visa ( approx 8000 b with travel ), then go to Chonburi for a work permit, ( 3000 b ). AND none of this could be done until November because the schools were on Hols. They also stated that the good schools required a Degree and as I don,t have one I should go to Kao Saan Rd and get one.. I asked for my money back; NO WAY. I went to the paper and and informed them of the

fraud; they said go away, they were a good client...I went to the Police, they were sympathetic;they rang the company and they were told to tell me that if I went back and paid another 57000 b I could have my cert. on the spot, no training or teaching invoved. The Police told me I should get a LAWYER. Question. Does MOE certify these people ?. Do they know that they are giving Certs. to people that can barely speak English , there was a Turkish person in my class ? Can other well meaning farangs be warned ? Is there a way to help Thais to speak english ? Garth Carter

Garth try these siteshttp://www.thaivisa.com/forum/General-topics-f2.html to ask other bloggers advice on the teaching position in Thailand, occasionally you can receive a sensible reply alsohttp://teakdoor.com/ also Stickman who has had many experiences teaching english in Thailand knows the position there you can ask him see his articles as well This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it Stickman speaks fluent Thai and is a Kiwi, he will put you on the right track hopefully. If in doubt in Thailand I would never spend any money without investigating it, researching it etc. My father also who is your age has spent many years teaching in Thailand, yes you do need a degree now, but just maybe you can make this work for you i.e. with whatever certificates you end up with you could try and teach in Cambodia, Vietnam or Laos, I would avoid KSR fake certificates, another excuse for locking up a farang no matter what his/her age.
Good luck

57000 baht for a certificate on recommendation from the police, should have set the alarm bells ringing. This could be to weed out the genuine guys and expose the charlatans who would pay the money just to get the fake papers and stay in the country on false pretenses as it was coming from the police.

Some people will try it on if theres money to be made and some will do anything to get papers.

Garth hope you have sorted things out, I guess going into a school and speaking to the Head would have been beneficial to you, at least you would know approximately what path you are to follow.

"pays to be well dressed just in case you get upgraded to business and first class"

Sammie, the way you look, would also include ethnicity?

P.S. My previous comment should of read, people judge others by the way they look instead of the way they act

Check out the TEFL course offered in Phuket. I took it and have a job. I hear of some people also getting jobs without a diploma or degree...i think that the best way to find anythnig in Thailand is talk to people. Anyone and everyone. The more expats you talk to, the more you will find out. I have many friends here who have found a job simply by knowing someone who left a job, or knew of job openings.
Don't waste your time looking online because they offer only a fraction of the English jobs that are actually available.

Hi all,

If you are in Thailand, avoid the recruiter/private school Endovate and the owner Mr Kirk.

Located on soi 23 at Thong Lo, this company did the following:

1) Offered me 35,000 baht then retract and offered me 32,000
2) Insulted me in front of a group of teachers for asking a question related to the curriculum.
3) Threatened to deport and arrest me when I quit (I quit because I was insulted and was offered a better job).

After working for 3 days, he didnt pay me, and said I must pay him 4,600 baht, or be arrested and possibly deported.

Kirk is out of control and doesn't have a shred of self control or respect for his employees.

Don't work for this fly by night scam!
