Kata Beach, Phuket Bar Scams

I used to live on Kata Beach. I reported this before to the local police just to see how they would react but alas.... they get paid off to shut up and ignore the scams.
 The Guest House name is: Sviga House

Owners names, Ben: Thai woman and Arnoo Nrowegian owner.

Location Kata Night Bazaar, Kata Centre Phuket

Bar names, Whale bar and generally the bars in Kata Night Bazaar location.
The girls there get the customers drunk then add drinks to their bills without the guys knowing. If that doesn't work then they lace the drinks or spike the drinks with some epileptic medicine (like a date rape drug) and then take the customers home and take them for as much as possible. In the morning the guy wakes up and cant remember a thing.The Whale bar is owned buy the same guest house and they have the family, females and male, working the bar and scamming customers.

The other is in Karon on the beach front, bar name Boon Bar (Owner name Nok, female and male) this is a where the owner of the bar along with the girls deliberately inform customers about their friends being single, so nice, so honest and fresh etc.... the guys believe the tall stories and take the girl on. The girls then advise the guy to send her money everyone (she gives it all to her sick child blah...blah). It is all complete nonsense. When the guy (infact, she has loads of them) sends her money she gives commission to her frineds and owner for all the gullible lies that helped say. Then even hire the odd Farang to bring in other Farang friends to get lied to, he also cgets paid t come out with the bulls**t of how genuine the girls are, and commission on over-priced drinks.

You are right, there is many scams in Thailand, especially of course where there is tourists and then of course money. Even if you book a trip you will experience many annoyances, the last trip I took was in March 2008, I decided to see Phi-Phi Lei and Maya Beach, on the trip we where supposed to go to about 5 places (different Islandstops). We went to 2.... When I confronted the guide on the horrible speedboat (hard wawes)about this, He replied> If you want to see the other Islands you maybe want to book your own yacht or boat... A comment like this says it all about how different the culture is in this country. I mean First of all, you expect some curtiosy, second you dont talk back, especially when the customer is right?? The guide of this speedboat (located in laguna north of Phuket Town) said it was bad weather..
Absolutely NOT! The weather was calm and so where the sea. They have many years to go before they even get close to being nice. And truthfull. -Sincereely Peter, many times in thailand,Phuket.

I live in Thailand, and I just wont travel to places like Phuket and Pattaya any more, between the absolute boys in Patong, Samui and Pattaya, the taxi drivers in Patong the jet ski operators it can be extremely annoying. And it doesnt happen everywhere in the world, Thailand tourist resorts are extremely rascist and rude and I would not reccomend them. Outside tourist areas the Thais are freindly enough. I have lived on and off in Thailand for 10 years including 18 months working there, so I know what Im talking about.

Is this a scam or just "business as usual" for these bars. Creative scams are only marketing gone wild. Remember guys, keep your zippers closed and your wallets in your pocket. Think with you big head not the small one. These are Thai bars for "farangs" not your local bar at home. These are "working" women not the girl next door or someone you want to "bring home" to meet mom. "Free enterprise" = scams in Thailand are alive and well.

Advise for the first timer traveler "Be very careful" at these bars and with these working girls. They are only trying to support their families.

WiseupLad....there are sites for the ignorant people to put in there wise cracks, people here come with a genuine concern and if this site helps which it does (countless people) then it is being put to a valuable use.

Your right Jim 100% you dont have to go to bars and getting pissed every night. There is alot more to life then acting like a druken fool. Sleeping is a good thing and phuket does have beautifull beaches, fantastic food and amazing marine parks. Lets get it right the majority of bars are really brothels in disgiuse. Full of women who want to spend the least amount of time possible to get the most money possible out of drunken fools. True???
And to sammie how can you not take the mickey out of someone so niave this is Thailand. Where the rich try to take advantage of the poor. Perhaps your one of them...

And by the way timeshare rocks but unfortunately a minority of people who buy it arent smart enough to use it. I have meet many happy owners. Over 6.7 million owners cant be wrong.

WUL..... you are obviously someone who deals with Time share, good luck to you, I hope you believe in your product, personally snaring people into buying Timeshare isnt a worthwhile occupation., in whatever guise it mascarades itself. Secondly, after a days work at the hospital, a gin and tonic is always refreshing before dinner, watching the sun go down, thirdly I am an ex pat, definately love struck with my husband and never touched a bar girl in my life, unless in a professional capaity! PS Samsong makes a wonderful cleaning agent in an emergency, and suggest you could use it as a mouth wash if your Listerine has run out.!

kata is a hole anyway been travellin for the last 7 months one of the worst places ive been. and obviously if a dead bar has 7 odd pretty girls sitting in it but not drinking they are working. it is a sad but true way of thailand... and if you get drunk and think they love you then you kinda deserve to get ripped off

Haha, most of the times i got drunk in Kata Night Bazaar, i did the drinking myself. Also here they put the bills in a cup just next to your glass, have a look, count, ask if you have a problem, or just pay each drink when you order it.
Boon bar is near the beach, yes, tucked in between 20 other bars, looking just like it, with at least 10 girls sitting around in each bar, waiting to be just that, single, nice, friendly and 'honestly' asking you for money, if they feel you like them that much. Can you 'honestly' say you thought these girls were not working girls. And don't tell me none of these girls doesn't have a sick relative back home. This is most of the time the difference between a thai bar girl and a farang prosti-ho.
Now there are many hotel bars and lounges you can stay in, with nice Philippino cover bands with synthesizer drum-machines, who can sing you Hotel California your whole holiday through, so you can feel at home away from home, just be careful so nobody offers you any advice on your way to Starbucks.

like the saying goes a fool and his money are soon parted, also once bitten twice shy, I did a lot of research on the internet before I went to thailand, and even being streetwise and from Newcastle we got ripped off a few times though nothing major, stayed 9 weeks got short changed, taken to an expensive restaurant were the thai girls must have got a share of our 3000 baht meal for 4, though we stayed clear of jetskis but saw some people conned with a set up crash! got nabbed by a limo from the airport, instead of taking a taxi, said no to a lot of drivers, them beautiful girl says you need a taxi me and my pal say ok, and thats 10 minutes after landing! doh! well next time we will be ready!

in the philippines the bar customer signs each drink docket, that solves dogie bills, but remember if thailand and or the philippines were perfect ,,like ha ha our western countries we wouldn,t go there,, nothing like a bit of sleaze and curruption, to have a really good time

THIS HAPPENED IN PATTAYA, a bar called Pattaya secrets, in Walking street. My friend was having a night out, he was slightly drunk, he barfined one of the ladies, on his way out he fell and landed on top of the lady, he was then arrested as the lady says she broke her arm in the fall, the lady came back from hospital, no plaster on her arm. She and the police tried to extort 500 thousand baht from him, he eventually agreed to pay 80 thousand, and the girl had such a big smile on her face. Secrets bar reported on their website that the farang tried to run out without paying a 3000 th baht bar bill. Which is a complete lie. We will never visit that bar again, and advise people to be careful when going there, another Thai scam. Thanks Secrets bar for ruining the holiday.

I recommend some things for anyone coming to Thailand, read these two books "Private Dancer" and "Damage Done". If you mess up or fall in love with a bar girl after that, then your a mug.
Never Ever fall in love with a bar girl, this goes for those who have already married one and believe they love you... dream on.
Thailand is the number one country in Asia for corruption...don't forget that.
Tuk-Tuk drivers, beach activity workers are the scum of the earth, never trust them. Stay away from any conflict with any Thai, you will never win. Don't take drugs. Never raise your voice in anger and if you have some bad to say about the royal family...don't say it.

Nice one Terry, I've told people the same thing, and you know what, once they've had a few bevvies something dark from within jumps out and destroys everything! I'm sick to the back teeth with farang with no manners and money who come to Thailand for SEX. Anyway, I'm sure in 30-40 years time the Japanese would of perfected there robot comfort women, which should have a knock on effect in the sex industry...

I agree with Terry and also confesions of a Bangkok private eye is an excellent book. The farang leaves his brain at the check in desk when he enters Thailand. I met a guy at heathrow who had sold his house in London and had retired he had about £1 million he had just been "back home" to tie up a few loose ends and was making his way back to Pattaya where he was getting 2 houses built one for him and his new wife of 3 months and another for his mother in law of 3 months. If I had a million £s I would bet that the same guy is now back in London with his tail between his legs and penny-less.
Although I must say I,m married to a girl from surin Thailand and we have a 4 year old daughter together.
I still agree with Terry.

Ok here is a story. I just met a russian in Phuket from the moulin rouge club. I spent about a week with her.
A few days after coming back from Thailand I get a call from her friend saying that she has been busted by the Thai police with possession on Narcotics. Basically I've been asked to send over 300,000 THB through western Union to bribe police ... Hmmm scam??????
