Parents Demand Money
Monday, 28 January 2008

This scam I had been warned about for several years in Koh Samui:

Farang invites a pole swinger or even a "regular" girl to go out.  The next day a man and/or woman knocks on his door saying they are the parents and demanding that he marry their daughter.  After he declines, they give him three options: marry her, give them x,000,000B, or face rape charges.  When he also declines this, they come back with the police who then pressure the farang to negotiate or face a prison term.  They then split the proceeds with the parents.

In may case I never took the woman out, but simply had dinner with her and her mother at their house, and hugged her in front of her mother when I left.  They came at me with the police, saying that a hug or any contact with a woman was illegal in Thailand and I would need to negotiate proper compensation.  I contacted a lawyer who at first laughed and then threatened them with a defamation suit.  Haven't hear anything back fom them yet, but who knows?

@wayne:
"Your real problem comes in if she is under 18 you will pay the cops and the parents."

no, the legal age for sex in Thailand is 16.
working in a bar is prohibited under 18, as well as paying for sexual favors of women under the age of 18.

This sounds far fetched, I've not heard this one in all my years in Thailand, likely it was even her parents. Problem is, when you're involved with anything illegal or dodgy (including bar girls) you're exposed to these types and their ilk. You need to be wisened up. Did you ask the parents to identify themselves. Was she really under aged (unlikely if they allowed her to work in a pole dancing club), did you ask them what sort of proof they had of 'rape'. Something like that would be so unrealistic I would have gone along with it, acting naive, saying it would take a few days for the money transfer, then arranged to check out.

No, in this particular case, the girl didn't work, was 23, and had a child. The parents thought they could scare me into paying even though I'd never taken the woman anywhere. I demanded a rape test and the parents backed down and admitted I hadn't raped her, but had touched her arm, at which point the police claimed that was a felony in Thailand. They demanded 100KB. I live in Samui and have obvious wealth, so no chance of getting on a plane and leaving my possessions. My lawyer claimed that this scam has gone on for years and he had personally handled over 100 similar cases. I never paid and never heard from them again.

In some cultures (cough mine) if you take a girl out and do not return by night, then they (mom and dad) assume you both did the horizontal tango. Once you return by morning, you have to marry her or pay a fine, especially if she was a virgin. I know it seems backwards, but this is how it works in some cultures (not just mine)...especially those who don't believe (or comprehend) the wonders of DNA testing. Fortunately some countries have a system of due process (to a lesser extent in others) before judgement is passed...

However the story Mike tells above is clearly a scam, so good thing he was able to get a lawyer to help him out.
