Top 10 Scams in Thailand
Written by Richard Barrow
Saturday, 27 September 2008

Most tourist destinations around the world have their scammers. Thailand is no different. However, what is more tragic here is that Thai people are naturally very hospitable. They love playing the host and welcoming guests to their country. I am sure many of us have seen this generosity on long train journeys when families share their meals with you. At my school, we often have tourists visiting for a tour. The school administration always welcomes the visitors and even gives them presents. In the early days, when it was still a novelty, we even took them to local tourist attractions and paid the admission costs for these complete strangers. That is how generous Thai people normally are. But, it is unfortunate that once they start to have prolonged contact with foreigners, they begin to change. It is no longer "be our guest". They will lie, cheat and even blindly rob you into order to get as much money from you as they can.

We started the website www.BangkokScams.com in order to make people aware of some of the more common scams that take place in the Kingdom of Thailand. But, even we were overwhelmed by the large number of scams and comments that were being posted every day. These are not isolated incidents. Despite the warnings in guidebooks and in websites like ours, these scams are still happening. It is really tragic because some tourists get hurt so much that they will never return to Thailand again. Even worse, they will tell their friends to avoid our adopted country like the plague. I really feel sorry for the tourists who go to the Grand Palace on their last day only to be told by scammers that the palace is closed. I was there the other day with my sister and her family and we were told several times that the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun were all closed on that day. They said that it was our lucky day as they knew a temple called the Big Buddha which was open. What they didn't mention was that they would drag us to a gem store where we would get a hard sell to buy worthless gems.

To help you be more street savvy on your next holiday in Thailand, we have decided to put together a top 10 of scams in Thailand. It is by no means definitive. If you have any scams that you would like to report, then please post them at www.BangkokScams.com.

1. The Grand Palace is Closed Scam - This scam can happen near any tourist attraction but still happens a lot outside the Grand Palace. As you approach, someone will tell you that the palace is closed for various reasons. Ignore them as you will end up in either a gem store or a tailor shop.
2. Thai Gem Scam - If you are not an expert on gems then I strongly urge you not to take the word of other people on how much money you can make if you sell these gems on return to your home country. People are losing a lot of money every day. Don't make the mistake that you are different.
3. Wrong Change Scam - A common scam at places like 7-Eleven and Family Mart in tourist areas is to give you change as if you gave them a 500 baht note instead of a 1,000 baht note. Many tourists are not familiar with Thai money and often give the wrong money or don't notice that their change is incorrect. Most shops will say out loud the denomination of any paper money you give them. Check your change!
4. Jet Ski Scam - Many people in Pattaya and Phuket are being scammed after renting jet skis. When you come back after your fun, they will point out scratches and dents in the jet ski and they will demand large sums of money. What they fail to mention is that a dozen other customers have already paid for those scratches. If you rent anything, be it motorcycle, car or jet ski, make sure all scratches and dents are documented.
5. Patpong Sex Show Scam - Don't believe the touts outside who say free sex shows and drinks for only 100 baht each. You will end up paying a bill in the thousands. Stay clear if you are alone as they can turn violent if you refuse to pay.
6. Hualamphong Scam - Outside the train station you will meet official looking people who will say they will help you book the seats. They take you to their nearby travel agent and pretend to ring the train booking office. They then say the train is full and your only way to travel is on one of their buses.
7. Long Distance Bus Scam - Many people have had things stolen from their bags on overnight bus trips. Some have even reported they were drugged and found their money missing when they woke up.
8. Airport Taxi Scam - Official looking touts will pretend that they are meter taxis and tell you that it is 500-1000 baht to go into town. The meter taxi outside is less than half this. The police have tried to crack down on them but they are back. Ignore anyone who asks if you want a taxi. The real taxi drivers are waiting outside by their cars.
9. Blackjack Scam - This usually starts when someone asks you where you are from. If you say, New York, then he will say he has a sister who will be going to study there. He then asks if you can go and meet her as she has some questions. At their house, you somehow end up playing blackjack with them. They then ask you to help cheat someone out of their money. Don't get tempted as it is you who is being scammed.
10. My Girlfriend is Pregnant Scam - A popular scams these days is your long distance girlfriend writing to you to say she is pregnant with your baby. She either asks for help to pay for the aboriton or for money to raise the baby. What she doesn't tell you is that she has already written to five other foreigners telling them that they are the father too. The latest gimmick is some medicine circulating in Isaan that swells their belly to make them look pregnant in case you fly in to visit them. The only way to know for sure is to go with them to the doctors to get an ultrasound.

Please remember, most scammers are successful because they play on the greed of their victims. If something is too good to be true then it probably is. As kind as Thai people are, they are also very shy. If you are approached by a well spoken Thai person on the street then the chances are high that this person is a scammer. Thai people are not normally so forward. However, please give them the benefit of the doubt unless, of course, they give you the codeword "Big Buddha" or "Lucky Buddha". This is then their admission of guilt. Finally, it is sad to report that there are now foreigners praying on helpless tourists. So, be weary of any unsolicited help.

I was given 1000 Baht less in change by the bus terminal cashier. We have just flown to Bangkok (old airport) and drawn money from ATM, which gave us 10.000 Baht notes. Then we took an airport bus to the city Eastern Bus Terminal. We purchased the bus tickets to Pattay and I paid with the 10.000 Baht note and was given a "wrong" change back. I only realised the mistake afterwards when counting my monies. ALWAYS count the change when you receive it.

my daughter and I came to bkk to visit family ( my daughter is adoped thai)

at the airport one of the taxi (mafia) told us we could get mini van to home for 200 bt. ( it was late at nite, and I did not chaange my us $$ too thai bt) so I gave them a $50 usd, and got change in thai bt.

when we were waiting in the mini van to leave, I noticed we were short the equivlent of $20 usd. I complained to the driver and the other person that took us to the mini van, but they acted if they could not understand what I was saying.

I told my daughter in a low voice ( but enough for them to hear) "dont worry, I gave them a fake $50 usd bill.

in less than 2 minutes the person that has shortchanged us was there demanding to have the money change reversed. I gave them back the remaining bt, and got the $50 back.

( took the time to change it at the exchange booth and get a taxi to home for just under 200 bt)

seems we outsmarted the crooks this time.

I was approached by a girl at a shopping center and she wanted me to meet her family.I am a retired street cop and didn't have anything to do and wanted to see what kind of scam she had in mind.We took a taxi to see her "brother".I first noticed he had a poorly fixed broken hand(old break),he then told me he wanted to get even with someone by beating him in blackjack and would I help him cheat a friend.I thought he didn't learn much when they broke his hand before.
With some quick lessons and bad acting the friend showed up for a brief appearance and left. The friend had glasses and a brief case, the glasses didn't look right(cheap and clear glass). He was suppose to look like a patsy, when the friend left I told the guy "this is a scam" he said of course we are going to get him.I said no you are trying to scam me and I could beat the shit out of both of you,I suggest you screen your victims better.I then left and laughed all the way back in the taxi.I was out a couple of bucks for a taxi but it was worth it.

I was scammed in the third flloor show in Nana (I know what do you expect ) but thought it would be useful so others don't fall for it. I had a few beers while watching the show with my daughter and her boyfriend. Whenever I ordered a beer I checked the chit to make sure the price was right. When we wanted to leave I added up the chits which came to 550 baht so I but a 500 baht note and 50 baht note in the small holder and gave it to one of the girls. We then went to leave and the mama san ran over and said I had put 2 x 50 baht notes in the holder and owed them 500 baht,(she gave me my 50 baht note back). I told my daughter and her boyfriend to go and get aq policeman and then sat back and watched the scam unfold. I just refused to pay and sat outside and after about 20 mins a person arrived who said he was a policeman and showed an official looking card. I knew he wasn't a policeman but was waiting for my daughter to return with a real one. After about 45 mins she came back and said the real policce were not interested and so I knew my goose was cooked. I paid the 500 baht and put it down to experience. I was threatened but by not reacting it just remained as words.

Lesson is, if you want to go to Nana make sure you show the girl exactly what you have given her and witnesses if possible. In spite of this it is still a cheap night out with some fun and not like the real rip offs back in Soho. Enjoy.

We were scammed with the sapphire scam, having visited the grand temple - we were lucky that we checked company on internet, the next day we went to the tourist police and were able to get 75% of our money back. Interestingly on the way to the police station, the tuk tuk driver insisted the station would be closed. A little wiser we ignored him. A valuable lesson. I have to say that it did colour my impression of the country and not sure I would return again - though the temples are just fabulous it made me feel that I could take nothing at face value.

Keep an eye out dodgy petrol pump attendants, especially on motorway service stations. Along with trying to shortchange (they've tried it on with me 4 or 5 times over a 6 month period last year but i always made sure to check), they don't reset the meter and you end up with a 2- 300 baht overcharge. When they see farang they make a big play to get you to a particular pump. The first time they tried it on i refused to believe the cost for filling the car so he then tried to say the machine was broken and asked how much was i prepared to pay. The 2nd time I was caught out. Came back from vacation and anticipated a price rise, but the bill was still more than i had expected. Needless to say next time i filled up it was much cheaper. So lesson is make sure you see them reset the meter !

I would suggest that the author of these scams has been set up. Most of these quotes are coming out of places like Pattaya and Phuket - sex tourists and yes you will bump in to the odd deceptive Thai. The other 100 destinations in Thailand are free of that kind of behaviour so simple, try to avoid the undesirables, both Western & Thai and your holiday will be better for it. Long distant bus ride. Mmmm. That could have happened in any Country. As for the Blackjack scam, that's just the most crazy story and whoever fell for that one deserved what he got! Dingo Durnley, don't just take the view of a few people here. Come talk to the rest of us who love this Country.

I appreciate the efforts of the people who made this site to let us aware of the scams that might have occured during our stay here in Thailand. Actually, its not just in Thailand that things like these happends. That is why, in one way or another knowing about scams helps us to be cautious. Personally, I like Thai people and the place as well and I would love going back here if there'll ever have a chance. Although the last time my friends and I went to MBK and while on our way back to our friend's hotel in Radisson, a cab driver had offered us to have a tour on a Gem store. He said we might have interest on something to buy while he will be getting his gasoline coupons. We have thought that it was just sort of advertising until I've read this site. Good thing, we didnt bought anything from there. But we saw a lot of foreigners who seemed to be taking the bait (if that was really a considered a saphire scams).

I lived in Thailand for over six years, have been there a dozen times on holidays and have never been scammed.

When in tourist areas I have been approached like anyone else, by touts, taxi mafia, people telling me places are closed and so on. But this is routine in any third world country and done a lot less frequently, aggressively and competantly in Thailand than most other places.

If your a tourist and very naive you might lose 100B paying too much for a taxi or miss the grand palace oneday because you thought it was closed, you can chalk it up to experience and even laugh about it.

As conmen say, you can't con an honest man. You will only lose serious money in Thailand if you are out for something for yourself. Buying cheap gems to sell back home, looking for an 18 year old to marrry ugly you or helping con someone else at blackjack. If you're greedy don't be surprised when you wind up in a nest of greedy people eyeing you up.

Virtually every person I've ever met who's suffered in Thailand. From losing a few baht to a grafter to being jailed for 10 years on drugs charges has always at some point told me when I had asked them if they would be doing this back home, has said "the rules are different here." Well for the umpteenth time, no they're not. If you wouldn't do it at home, don't do it in Thailand, no-matter what anyone tells you.

The scams are everywhere these days. I used to promote Thailand but would not want my friends or family coming here without someone looking after them.

I met two tourists the other day. They had just arrived...and guess who they were talking to? The scumbag rip off Tuk Tuk driver at the top of my Soi.

This Tuk Tuk driver has been lying to and cheating tourists for years. I contacted the TAT about him. The TAT said to contact the Tourist Police. The Tourist Police says to go report him at Lumpini Police Station.
Now that is a problem since the Thai Police are corrupt to the core and hate foreigners..... would probably tip off the scammer, no?

Feel like a relaxing holiday?
Then don't go to Thailand.
Because daily you will either be ripped off or you will be uptight about the possibility of being ripped off.
Ripped off by the fruit seller.
Threatened with a knife by the durian fruit seller,a female.
The female butcher will put your bare meat on to the dirty scales instead of putting the meat in a plastic bag first.Just to insult foreigners, who she hates.
Another female butcher will charge 90 Baht for half a kilo of meat, when the meat costs 90 baht a kilo.
When your daughter is walking alone down the stairs, the female guest house cleaner will follow her and push her down the stairs.
Pay your guest house for the night, then leave in the morning and then get asked to pay ,again, by the female guest house owner.
Pay another guest house for the night, then leave in the morning and then get followed down the road, being told to pay for the previous night,by the female owner.
And on and on it goes.

go to Betty Boops in south
go to Nana

these dives not only carry disease but your money disputes usually have you ended up in the hospital with a smashed head especially when most clubs have 3-4 motor bike taxi drivers in back waiting to be paid to kick your white azz and don't even bother to call police .they will be of zero help. Most Thai are puzzys when in fights with outsiders your usually battle 3-4 of them at one time.

DONT HANG OUT ALONE.. Safety is in Numbers as they do.

BEST ADVICE STAY OUT OF THIS FILTH IN 1ST PLACE.

USE YOUR FUKING HEAD

Betty Boops is FAMED of these white boy azz whooping when a bar fine is paid the girl disappears and you complain to management then out comes the boys ..Police arrive to pick you up out back and take ya to the hospital for stitches.Don't think for one second these people give a dayum about you , its all about your wallet no matter what it takes to get into it.

Lived here for 19 years and feel got not cheated too many times. BUT... last week I wanted to fill up my car with fuel at a fuel station and asked them to put in 2,000 Baht. The guy asked me if I wanted a bill? I said no. Went to the 7-eleven at the station and returned within 5 minutes. When I looked at the counter it wss on zero again, paid anyway and wanted to leave after paying the 2,000. Somehow I felt something was wrong so dediced to ask for a bill from the cashier anyway. Got it, for a thousand only... Check the meter at the gas station before paying, if you have to walk away from the car while filling up...

They sneakily put the Thai price in Thai script only so the guests don't know they are paying 8X the local rate.
This gives visitors a bad feeling. Seems every we go, we are getting gouged.

Mr Jacob, you had many 10000 bath notes in your wallet during your stay. Probably not a cheap holiday. Usely the atm will give you 10 notes of 1000. To get 10000 notes you must have been redrawing a lot of money from your bank. What have you been doing? Hope you didnt buy gemstones, gold chaines for strange ladies, or houses in the Esan, car for your new Thai family. motorbikes for her brother etc Usely I dont carry around so much cash in Thailand. Hairdress 100 bath food 400 bath a day beer 200 bath a day hotel 500 bath (with airco) and very clean. Well I stay away from the ladies as much as possible or only for one night. That way it stays cheap. Thailand is cheap. Thai people are expensive friends or girlfriends

Tuk tuks are just as expensive as a taxi meter. But Tuk Tuks offer no comfort at all. Only comfortable gemshops with frienly Thai. One tuk tuk ride in the healthy Bangkok air is like smoking ten sigarets . In case you stopped smoking, dont go to Bangkok at all. One day in Bangkok is like smoking two packs of sics. At least taxis have airco. The question is if they clean the filters. Best thing is to avoid that hyper polluted city of course. Unless your tired of life. In that case one can shorten his live by going to live there.

I'm a Bangkok expat, and I honestly cant understand why people think of Bangkok the way they do; there's no difference between this town or any other big town in Europe, Asia or US for that matter. Taxi drivers will try to scam you in every city in the world.

As for the sex show scams and other tricks related to activities of similar kind; if you're not clever enough to make sure you dont end up seeing your money fly, stay out of filthy places that advertise women playing ping-pong using nothing but with their private parts.

The one scam that really should be on the list is the Grand Palace entry Ticket scam. Outside the entrance you will be approached by touts who informs you that you need a ticket and that you need to buy the ticket "over there". These tickets are not real tickets. The REAL tickets are sold inside the palace itself.

Yes but when I poor Thai goes to a state runned hospital often he or she is treated like sh. I visited one with a Thai girlfriend. As I dont like to spent money on women we went there. No privacy. Dirt everywhere.More like a prison than a hospital Not many 20 bath hellos either. In the Esan I have seen even worse. Severly ill patients having to wait all day in the passage or outside. When the doctor saw me he didnt want to help her at all. Just gave her rude answers. Probably he didnt understand her to come there. A falang can give her money for a better hospital. Well I took her to a private one, and like you said Dave, polite, quick, big smiles, big bills. Allthough I have to admit compared to Amsterdam still very cheap.

Putting him to prison is a deed of corruption by itself, because the people acting may be even more corrupt.
Speaking to a Thai here who is obivous a Tharksin man,

I have heard other stories about hospitals too. Dont know if they are true. Second hand info. I was told about falangs trying to bring severly sick or severly hurd by accident Thai people to a hospital in their car. No aquaintances but complete strangers. The Thai victim often unconsious and not having insurances cards on them was refused in most hospitals unless the falang would pay ahead a lot of money for somebody he doesnt even know.
So the falang ends up driving all over Bangkok for hours trying to get rid of the victim. In case he ends up with a dead body he might be in serious trouble too.

I agree that tuk-tuks are possibly the biggest nuisance in Bangkok and they tend to be even more expensive than metered taxis. Don't bother taking them. The drivers will make you feel like you are riding a roller coaster, it can be a very dangerous and scary experience. If that wasn't enough, the alarming pollution levels of Bangkok will make you sick!

As for motorcyle taxis (they are available all over the city) I strongly advise anyone not to use the services of the motorcycles stationed on the corner of Sukhumvit and soi 26. I gave the driver a 50 Baht note to pay for a 20 Baht ride and as I got off the motorcyle and handed him the note he ran away in less than a second without giving me my change back! If you use motorcycle taxis, please do yourself a favour and give them the exact amount to pay for the ride.

Remember to have plenty of small notes to avoid the I have no change scenario in taxis hoping theyll get the 100, 500 or 1000 that you do have for the 50 baht fare. Tip when its justified and reward good service of course but always stiff the scammer.

Sometimes the taxi drivers genuinely have no change on them if its the beginning of the shift but some of course play on this fact to con you out of your hard earned.

If you feel that you have been cheated when you get out leave the door open haha!

This is my 10th year going back to thailand with my thai wife and 2 children. I have been pulled over numerous times at checkpoints and have never paid a dime. I have met very nice police in thailand, i try to speak thai and respect them, I am away with a laugh and a smile. I had a friend loose his passport and 500$ cash at the market in chiang mai, he was bummed until the next night ,we walked through the market and a vendor chased him down giving every dollar and the passport back. Try nepal or india or cambodia or vietnam then tell me thailand is full of scammers. The first couple of years I would be approached at the tourist areas with the usual, but I must have a look now-probably that I dont look lost. I feel very comfortable in thailand, dont let a few baht ruin your trip or visit. My favorite is the tourist arguing and getting angry because the vendor wont drop 10 baht(about 30 cents). I have always gotten correct change, for ten years, not to say it wont happen in the future. I do not frquent the the bar areas but have a friend who does(for a few years) and he says never a problem. The only time I got scammed in thailand was a farang who was "late getting my pension check-I changed banks" , I had known him for a few weeks-I was out 200$-lesson learned.

I have been close to being scammed on the Blackjack scam. this man who was half Thai and Pilipino said his sister is going to London (not far from me) and he asked if I want to go to the house for lunch so I agreed to meet him the next day as I was walking to sala daeng near the sky train his cousin said hi and asked me to go to meet there family but she was just after a free taxi ride I think that was there motive which cost 200b and I met this guy the next day he had my number I went to where he claimed his sister lived which was north of lad prow somewhere and his father said all this ball shit about him working on a cruise liner that leaves Pattaya that night and he had a free Vip ticket and told me about how easy it is to fool some your opponent at blackjack then told me to be an engineer and told me a rich business woman is coming. Then this woman (probably related to this scammer) came in who spoke good English like the family started playing with $200 they gave me. And I was winning until they told me to bet higher. I don’t gamble I just went along with what they said because I didn’t just want to leave so fast because they gave me a drink. But I left when they tried to get me to put my own money down after I used all the $200. for some reason when I left the guy I originally met came with until I went into the MRT station may be he was making sure I don’t memorize his address because gambling is illegal in Thailand especially if it’s not licensed so if you’re in Mc Donald’s Silom where I was when I met him and asks you to go to his house say you’re busy. I think he will also try to use you to get a free taxi ride as well. He said he worked at Bangkok’s international airport i don’t know if it is true.

there is a scam that is very serious in nature that no-one has mentioned and it applies to those of you who have your own transport i.e. pick-up,car, motorbike.
i served 25 years as a firefighter in the UK and the rules of my life were to save life at any cost until i came to retire in Thailand in 2003.
i bought a pick-up and travelled the length and breadth of the country, however i came across an accident whereby someone was seriously injured. i was shocked to hear my Thai girlfriend telling me that i was to ignore the incident and drive away as fast as i could from the scene.
i questioned her about this, she informed me that it would be me who would be the guilty party in an accident that i wasn't even involved in. Just so that the family of the victim could demand money from me as a farang.

It might indeed create a conflict between the Tuk Tuk drivers and the shopkeepers . Once the shopkeepers know they are victims of scamming by tuk tuk drivers. But as long as there are falangs buying it wont work.
When the shopkeepers have to pay more to the tuk tuks then they earn selling to the farangs t he scam will end. In every tourist guide book they should advice visit this site before visit Thailand. Usely the warnings concerning scams are in small print. It should be clearly written on the first page of the book.
But probably publishers dont want to disturb good relations with Thailand
The accent is put on the possitive aspects of Thailand.
It still is an interesting country to visit of course.
But as most people buy a tourist guide book before going to Thailand and still get ripped off I think warnings are not sufficiently made clear to the reader.
This is the main cause of all the scams as like I said most people will buy a lonely planet before going.
Warnings should be published on the first pages.

Everybody scams everybody in Thailand. So why should an exception be made for us farangs? In Thailand everybody is a victem, thai or farang, who gives the others the change to scam him. Formely one good marry a Thai and bring her over by paying something like 400 euro to immigration here, besides expensis like all kind of documents to have to be expensively signed by the consulate in Bangkok. Nowadays one has t count with about 8000 euro!! Immigration laws change rapidly. The girl has to learn dutch at the grooms expensis in Bangkok.
In Thailand one is not allowed to buy land. Buying women isnt a problem. Even the ones been to üniversity" are mostly jobless. They usely studied something in "tourisme" or "business" For what its worth. They can show you their papers but mostly cannot show you a job. If they have ajob its usely an underpaid job. Let be bargirls. Exporting them is good business for Thailand as they will scam their farang in europe by sending almost all the money the make working in restaurants i n europe to Thailand. They are hardly interested in investing their money earned in their European relationship. Strong euros. Often 500 to 1000 euro a month. Good export product! Marcus - definitely not true - myself and a friend got scammed by dodgy VIP buses in Phuket - we went to get a cab and it took us to a "travel agent" who helped organise us a hotel but at the expense of being tormented by her every day for the remainder of the trip. Also we had another "travel agent" who "organised" us a "trip" to an elephant ride which didn't include the price of the elephant ride itself. That doesn't even count being perpetually harassed by street hawkers, tailors, the usual well spoken folks in touristy areas etc. Samui had far fewer scammers though, and far less pestering on the street than other places.

one has to remember that thailand is a third world country and that within the last decade the thais have become true masters of scams, i am at present writng a book on this subject, there is a lot of falang scammers out there too, if i told you some of the basic scams out there you would be rolling about the floor laughing, heres a few to start with: a falang goes to thailand for three months break, books into a cheap apartment and checks out the local bars, hes new and MARKED he meets a bar girl pays the barfine 200 bhat for the night and off he goes back to his room with his new girlfrien arm in arm. He falls head over heals for her and dicides the next day to buy her a mobile phone, they go to a shop the phones have no prices on them, but she tells him in her broken english i get you good plice tirak tirak means my darling, she then speaks in thai telling her friend to stick a 1000 bhat on the price they will share it later, then you buy her a top up, she then tries to top the phone up but it doesnt work, so you try, nope must be a fualty top up card but you cant get a refund, so you buy another and this time it works, shes just texted her sister the top up number, hey presto another 500 bhat. after 2 or three weeks she wants you to meet her family in the village, this is very honerable and means shes totally true to you. So you go to rent a motorbike, but wait she tells you the logic of renting a bike which could be dodgy, then asks you to work out how long your here for then does the equation that its cheaper to buy a bike and you will save money, very true, so you opt for the latter, brand new bike, off you go to the village. On arriving at the village you recieve a kings welcome, and trully fall in love with the whole situation, she treats you like a king. You leave after three days and go back to your apartment dizzy with love, a few days later your new motor bike gets stolen, you call the police report it but the documents were under the seat, unlucky. Then it comes to the end of your holiday and shes at the airport with you crying and all. Off you fly back to glumpy old england. You tell her to keep her phone on all the time and you will call her every day. dont forget to read part two of this true story as it costs him his life!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great web site. Anyone put off by the scams on here shouldn't travel. I've travelled a fair bit now and will be going to Thailand next, and have found the info here only helpful not discourging. I have been to some of the worst countrys for scams and done all the things they tell you not to do in the guide books and alot of things they don't even talk about and I have been scamed, ofcourse. But it's only a little money, they put up the challange and I lost, big deal I've still got all my body parts and haven't been threatend with my life, I've had some the most amazing expirences I've ever heard of and I wouldn't give it up for anything. Yes, i am black man, and visit and have thai friends for many years, and a nice thai ladyfriend. Many thai fail to recognize their own racist/prejudical beliefs, and added to "westernized" influences that come from australians, usa, and canadian, and even european citizens. Most thai i have met[knock on wood!] do not have this racist beliefs, but ones of mainly what i call "skinned classism", simulat to the beliefs as the chinese that darker skinned means that you a mainly a lower classed laborer, and there for "bad" in the eyes of the society, and to forever be in this ethnic/racial caste system, that thailand seems to have. This "thaigirl", is probably issan[dark skinned/low classed thai] in her society, and there are some black africans that do scam simular to the thais there, but is nothing like the LOS[land of scams], as most thais should be ashamed to even be "thai", what with the massive human rights, and societal problems are here. I have been treated pretty well here, but like all things, due to color, and class, and other "influences", and lack of thai worldliness, and education and intelligence, thai take advantage to everyone..regardless of..and especially those of caucasian orgins! be wary of many that befriend you..as thais do NOT come up to strangers, and intiate talks and such..UNLESS there is a ulterior motive involved..as majority of thais are buddhist, and believe to not get involved in things, unless there is a vested or emotional issue[such as knowing you and friend of family, ect..] as getting involved with a stranger or even one they know..can cause troubles to them. as for 'downunder", i bet he is skinhead plant here!;-) as for sammie, he is right to read "stickmanbangkok.com", as that is where i too..as author as to what is really going on there too! takecare all regardless of race.....;-)

Le, good day to you, racisim is everywhere, no matter what colour, we I am sure have all been guilty in our days, I certainly dont have to tolerate a Thai telling us to be careful of "blacks", when they are the most colour conscience of us all, look at the supermarkets, adorned with skin whitening products which are harmful and shame on the cosmetic/pharmaceutical companies for producing shite like this. (Hitler & Co were very active in producing the perfect arian race which to this day still is producing problems). I find personally the Issan girls (without all the slap stick make up) have a more natural beauty then down south. "Thai Downunder" should be ashamed, with his/her attitudes, unfortunately people like that who have been granted an Australian visa/passport tend to be the proverbial snobs who think they are greater than their sisters/brothers back home.... they are probably riding on the backs of their partners. Sure there have been many racist problems in Australia and Kevin Rudd has taken it on board to rectify this in 2008/09 and we certainly dont need Thai people in Australia advocating racist issues to us, let them work on their own country first! Thai down under, have you been to Hobart Tasmania, have you seen the wonderful BLACK Hmongs (Lao) the markets are full of these wonderful people that were displaced and granted homes in Australia, they are a quiet wonderful people who sell their wonderful fruit and vegetables, not asking anyone for anything! There are atrocious stories when they were in refugee camps in Thailand, impossible to think that the land of smiles can be so cruel! Nong Khai prison where many Hmongs with their children are imprisoned with no access given to them by the various agencies...starving in pitiful conditons.... look at your own doorsetp before you critisize other races and colours!

7 years ago i was on a holiday with my boyfriend in Thailand. We stayed two days in Bangkok. The first morning we came out of the hotel an older guy ( i guess around 60 years old) walked next to us for a bit and then started speaking english to us. He spoke very good english and seemed genuinely interested. He said his english was so good because he had always been working for the government. He said that he recommended to do a boat tour in bangkok and he said he was willing to give us a tour cause he had nothing to do. He agreed and he took us on a boat. We made a stop for a drink which he paid for. So far so good...when the boattrip was finished he seemed to get into an argument with the boat driver saying the boat driver want to have around 60 euro's and that we had to pay it. He didnt have money to pay. We did pay it in the end but afterwards felt really bad that we got scammed.

There wasnt even a discount incentive to persuede you to take the empty suites on offer.

I checked out of a hotel in sukhumvit on this advice went to the nearest internet cafe and booked a room at the same hotel no problem. Supposedly there were no rooms left of course.

Not sure if the rooms are block booked with the websites but this could be another scam to get people to overpay?

When visiting Phuket where our children fly into and love the beach life, we usually prefer to eat at the open air restaurant markets behind the expensive tourist restaurants.... It used to be great value, good food, fresh oysters and fish.... at yet they started to rip us off big tme, charging us for beers and food we didnt have (I am half thai and half singaporean) The look of disbelief on their faces when I dared to question the bill, so unfortunately when ordering I write down on a note pad what I have ordered the price etc, and add up my own bill...... and then smile.... always smile when you query the bill so they dont loose thier wonderful faces!that little piece of paper of your own additions can save you B300-400B at one time!

It does seem a Thai cultural thing to shamelessly scam visitors.

Even the AOT try to mislead arrivals just seconds after visitors clear customs with their Limo scam.
They have signs and agents lying to visitors. They seek out 'first time' visitors.
Your hotel staff realize that every taxi parked out front is a scammer. They never tell their guests.
Every Tuk Tuk out in the tourist area is a scammer. None of them give rides to locals.100% scammers.
Teams of scammers hang out at the entrance to Thailands most popular sites and scam tourists.
Scammers hang out next to the TAT info booths and lie to every tourist. The TAT employees see this but don't do anything.
The Thai Police do random searches of foreigners and have a full time force following cigarette smokers and fining them 2000 when the butt hits the filthy gutter.
Taxi mafia run all the resort transportation.
The prices are unreasonable and they drivers are thugs.
Double Pricing at Thai Boxing, Ocean World.
Restaurants that operate as tourist ripoff joints, colluding with taxi/tuk tuks.
Bars that offer no cover charge then charge you 3,000 for a beer. Punks or off duty cops run the place and intimidate foreigners.
Fake friendly people posted on corners all over town, telling lies to foreigners

You can buy illegal software and Rolexes, DVD Porn on the sidewalk, next to the Police Box.
You cannot buy a Pirated Thai DVD. Not allowed.

And if you need the TAT or Tourist Police. They are worthless.
The Tourist Police collude with the Tourist Mafia.

In Vietnam as in most countries there are scams, but at least there are interested bodies that actually try to alleviate this..... and also its easier to discuss with the Vietnemese their scams and they back down, and actually given the the fact that they had the "American War" as the Vietnamese call it, they have all the more reason to scam us!! lol.... If you really take a look at the report of thai scams, you will find that most of the time, the mastermind arent usually thais. The thais are just paid to do it..Since they are normally assured quite a huge sum of money if the scam works.

Either way,
when you visit thailand, Just becareful like with any other country. People are always trying to make you pay more just because you don't understand the country well. But Tourists nowadays are getting smarter from what i see.

Less people are taking airport taxi unless they are sure the normal taxi is more expensive. And just a funny thing, i have been seeing thai that are married abroad, trying to turn around and scam the scammer!

One of the case was this couple that i saw. The lady was a thai but at the airport, she DID not speak a single thai even though her husband told her to ask for something. When the "Airport taxi official" asked if they wanted taxi, she immediatly agreed to the price(which was of course more than what would have cost on a normal taxi). Once she paid up, she dragged the person over to the tourist police who happens to be walking by! And lol! She took the airport taxi anf got the money back!

Tuk-tuks and taxi's are such a rip-off in Phuket and are so difficult to talk down, you're really better off just renting a car. Renting a car in Phuket makes the trip 10x better as well. Make sure you rent from Budget or through your hotel to avoid being ripped off. Take a digital camera and photograph any prior damage to the car, mine had a good-size dent and I photographed it.

Taxi's outside the airport in Phuket and Bangkok advertised as 'meter taxis' both refused to use the meter. In Bangkok I told the guy to drop me off for refusing to turn on the meter and that persuaded him to turn it on.

I think it's important to understand that the extra 'tourist surcharge' is common in all third world countries.

Somchai, your remark "they can afford to pay more" typifies the way Thai people think. Engage your brain instead of talking through the dark hole. If I saw Americans/Thai/Swiss tourists in my land, I would have to think how they got there. e.g. a plane trip, hotels, food, transportation. Yes every land has it scams that is for sure, but when the tuk tuk driver drives me from Tesco Lotus back home in NK and wants to charge me double, should he not think, "this could be a regular customer better to cultivate this customer and get further business " than having an angry customer who you wont see again. Your attitude is unhealthy and your country is heading for a huge decline. Many farang come to Thailand to live their life on a pension, if you cannt comprehend this then I suggest you educate yourselves on exchange rates. Stop constantly blaming the farang and start some progressive thinking of "how to keep the farang" in your country, so that people can living amicably and unity in a country they love.

JFK to downtown NYC is alot less than a hundred dollars in a yellow cab.

Its crazy but some people think that to be able to afford to come to Thailand for a couple of weeks they have to be like hollywood film stars who all live in houses the size of football fields whom are just itching to spend all their cash on sub standard gemstones and dodgy safari suits. What a load of crap!

The true obscenity belongs with people further up the scale who gain immense power and money in Thailand over the poorer people by means of corruption, nothing to do with Farangs who mostly only bring money into the country and should by right be taking good memories out of it. Scammers only take without contributing and will mess things up for the whole country if left unchecked as the foreign money that pours into Thailand is diverted to other countries.

Plenty of good Thai people are honest in Thailand and dont have to resort to scams or crime to survive. Its a lesson to westerners how they do it and remain so content with their lot in life.

Most of the cash ripped off of tourists by the small time scammers probably ends up being peed down the drain in the form of high octane whisky anyway which has little to do with poverty.

Destroy Thai Culture by bringing massive foreign investment into the country improving transport, roads, sewerage and improving basic living conditions for many and providing employment opportunites for millions enabling them to improve their lives. How many foreigners use taxis in Bangkok day in day out as an example?

Without foreign investment would the Bangkok sky train have been built?, how about the metro?
Why do so many Thais gravitate towards Bangkok from their rural areas, to make money thus improving things up country.

True Thai culture is unaffected by this so called invasion by farangs which has transformed the country neccessity being the mother of invention. People are who they are, good or bad, judged by their actions and behaviours.

People can think for themselves in this day and age and often cite culture as an excuse for unacceptable behaviour. Culture in many countries can be the excuse for so called honour killings, violence and rape so can hardly be argued as a valid cause.

If culture would be the be all and end all in life we would all be sacrificing our first sons to appease the gods!

The qualities of true Thai culture come from within the true hard working people who remain cheerful despite living very hard lives where days off are rare and foreigners who usually mean good luck to those helped in business by their money often make things better, especially those farangs that recognise the great things about Thailand that has made it the number 1 long haul destination for many of the worlds people, including many from asia who share ancient cultures as well.

Seems to some people Farangs are the only ones not entitled to have a culture.

The travel industry is full of ways to get the customer to pay more and the airlines are their own worst enemy.

Thai airways ticket now London - Bangkok about £650 -, this price doubles in the high season, £1200 for a economy ticket with no seatback movies, ouch I'll go to New York for £300 instead or Tokyo (Longer Journey with better entertainment) for £500! The setback entertainment units apparantly are being rolled out to the fleet of Thai airways aircraft 10 years after most other carriers had the technology!

Up to £7000 first class in the high season (The high rollers are generally subsidising the cost of Royal Silk and economy but its not being passed onto the customers here). Hard to justify the spend as the quality in first class is evolving downwards. Especially when you get scammed when you get to your destination after being turned over on the flight price.

Luckily Thai airways internal flights are great value as are most upscale hotels here now its reached saturation point of supply and demand, Royal Silk class being exceptionally good value on standby status but the airlines cost of international flights turns alot of people away to consider better value destinations.

People do make a concerted effort considering some cost and 20 hours travelling to get here and it is a shame when they are scammed. Customers have a choice too of where they go.

Probably one of the smaller airbus industries a300, much better to have a Boing 747 but thats usually used on the Phuket - Bangkok route because of the high international traffic thru Suvarnabhmi from Japan and Korea to Phuket. Was very surprised to get on a jumbo for a 1 hr trip but it was in the Japanese peak times of August :)

For how long will the rot set in for Thai airways? Other asian airlines are winning the battle for the declining number of passengers. Singapore airlines making inroads to the Australian / NZ traffic and the big A380s. Changing times and Thai is not really catching up.

Yes off topic. But you seem to be well informed on the subject. About scams. This year I travelled by land to Poi Pet in Cambodia. A lot of Scams on the Cambodian side of the border. And on the Thai side of the border This visumsellers on the Thai border side are incredible. Glad I didnt do business with them. A rip off. Bought it in Cambodia. But a lot of farangs in Cambodia told me they got scammed there because they believed their stories and bought it too expensive. Some got scammed again on the Cambodian side. Overthere they take you in a free bus to the bustation in Poi Pet There is nothing in that hugh busstation but a concreet counter. They tell you to chang money because Thai baht isnt excepted in Siem Reap. Glad I didnt believe them because farangs told me afterwards they got ripped of severly changing money there

Poi Pet Theo has enjoyed a really bad reputation for many years, this border has always been considered not only dangerous but extremely corrupt. As you found out for yourself Thai Bt. US. Riel all accepted. I have worked in Cambodia for many years, yes scams in abundance there as well, scams in Laos, scams in Vietnam but for me the people are better read, more intelligent and in general more genuine than their neighbour the big T...!

written by Theo, Sun 15 Mar 2009 15:21:06 CDT
Well the price seems to be official I think it was like 30 dollars I paid. Same thing in Laos. Think they didnt give me any proof of paying. You can pay in baht as well like at the Lao border. The busstation was weird. Like I said one big counter in a hugh building a few kilo outside Poi Pet. The free ride with the bus. There were only two! of us and the bus took off right away! Usely they wait for more passengers. Only a few people in that"busstation" The same people selling the bustickets told me there wouldnt be any bus forthe next 5 to seven hours. They would arrange a taxi for me. This was as told a lie. The same busticketsellers wanted me to go to a small window at the other side of the building to change. When I refused and said even at night I would be able to change in Siem Reap at big hotels, they got agressif and asked me why I didnt trust them. The bus was another story 400 baht (to much for the distance considering prices in Cambodia, but I didnt know) On the way they asked if anybody wanted to stop for food. Somebody said yes. They stopped at a restaurant but it wasnt that cheap and noone took a consumption. Then they started a argument with the guy who said to be hungry. As a punisment for all of us they turned of the airco. They asked how many people had reservations for hotels in Seam Reap. I didnt react because is none of their business. They made phonecalls to Seam Reap and dropped us kilometers from the center of Seam Reap on the main road. No busstation, nothing. So no otherway than taking a hotel engaged motorbike Tuk Tuk.
On the Thai side, I was brought their by car, the scammers were banging on the car, telling where to park and where to buy a visum. Impossible in Cambodia! It was like being jumped on by a swarm of insects with an average height of 1.60 meters. Of course they take you to one of those small agencys. You pay like 40 dollars for the visum than, and they will arrange a Tuk Tuk for you you have to pay as well. 100 baht for 100 meters. One can walk. But this was the story told me by otheres. Like said I just walked across. If you want to change in Cambodia, there is a Casino just across. I am sure you will find an ATM machine there. And maybe another busstation. A normal one with food available and so on
...
written by Theo, Sun 15 Mar 2009 15:46:11 CDT
Interesting. Just looked at Wiki travel. It says the official price of the visum is 20 dollars, but expect to have to pay 30 at landcrossings. (As far as I remember I payed 30 indeed) No receipt Who collects the 10 dollars. The so called busstation, I found out allready, seems to be a travelagency. Many complaints about people getting ripped off there. On internet some wrote they payed 45 dollars to Seam Reap. I know this is about Thailand but as many take this trip... As a warning.

written by Theo, Mon 16 Mar 2009 16:38:57 CDT
Interesting again is that on both sides of the border authoritis are fully aware of whats happening. On the Thai side the runners aproaching you will take you to a travel agency. It doesnt seem they are gong to get the visum by themselfs like the Cambodians do on some Cambodian bordercrossings in full cooperation with corrupt immigrationemployes. (handing your passport through a sidewindow so you get it quickly) Their must be a lot of agencys because there are so many scammers Maybe they share the profit with Cambodian immigrationemployes. (added to the 10 dollar they overcharge allready) Probably they have to give Thai police something to to allow it all happen. So farangs might end up paying 40 dollars or more for a 20 dollar visum. And an addional pay for the Tuk Tuk service (About 100 meter. If your legs work the way they should just walk) In Cambodia a scammer with an official looking ID around his neck (A roap would be better) He also will tell you he works for the Cambodian government. He takes you to the small immigration office. Talkes with the friendly employes warns you for scammers ha ha brings you to this free busses to the busstation, apparently not a busstation but a travelagency as some fellow complainers have written on the net. He said it was the Poi Pet busstation what was heard by the immigrationofficers. You go there and there dont seem to go any busses back. So you are stuck with these scammers or you will have to walk back to Poi Pet. Its all amusing

Theo this is the impression that I got too. There are some great people in Cambodia and Thailand who live with very little and are still great human beings willing to learn about and help others.

Too many people say that all thais are scammers or all cambodians are scammers when its not the case at all. This has a detrimental effect on the whole area.

What needs to be recognised is the criminal element that sees out of jealousy or hatred farangs being just targets for scams, these people would be criminals even if they were rich as they are greedy, some criminals are exceedingly wealthy on the profits of scams.

If living in the west was so great why do millions of people travel to / live and work in Asia where the culture is more accepting and tolerant in the main?

Its only the criminals that make things bad, everyone has a choice to do good or bad things.

Yes, H20 you have a valid point but the corrupt set up goes up through society until ordinary people on the ground can only do so much. Corruption and face saving is rife right to the upper levels, authorised and unauthorised here.

There is another side to Thailand that is honest, hard working, tolerant and genuine this runs in parrallel with the corrupt side, spotting the corrupt tactics by reading of this site and reading others experiences should go some way to nutralising the scammers effect so that instances become rarer and the criminals stand out for what they truly are.............criminals.

I compare the scammers to mosquitos that can and should be metaphorically swished away. Sure both are annoying downsides of Thailand but it doesnt ruin my experience of this fascinating country.

Yes I have worked and travelled many times in Cambodia by air and many scams are operated via poipet, and they divert you via Palin or Osmach. I have done the crossing in a pick up truck many times, terrible roads in all conditions (pushing trucks in the wet) and yes on this route there is a scam a minute. This routing via PoiPet to Thailand has always been renowned as being pretty dangerous (Pol Pot's regime was very active here) and of course all the scams are free to see but somehow your senses are heightened in Cambodia (very similar to India's poverty!).But to see Cambodia on a motor bike/pick up and to meet the people is awe inspiring. A country that has immense suffering, to sit and talk french with Cambodian doctors, teachers (who hid their education background from Pol Pot regime) about the genecide, sharing meals with people who have nothing, asking you not for mioney but your books!
If you go from Thailand (Had lek) over to Cambodia on the thai side, the cambodian people have suffered so much at the hands of the Thais, but they remain gentle and genuine and this route isnt scam free but its an amazing way into Cambodia.
Scams are everywhere, but I think the biggest scam in Thailand are the words "Land of Smiles"!! We are aware of human rights issues in Burma, Laos Cambodia and the west, but I cannot tolerate those fake smiles telling me how wonderful Thailand is. Just go into Nong Khai prison and see the Hmongs incarcerated with children with hardly any food/clothing. Talk to Hmong refugees that have started new lives in Hobart Tasmania how they were treated at the hands of the Thais in refugee camps. Thailand has a new PM, yes UK (Eton) educated and hand on heart I really do not understand why he isnt tackling the problem on curruption/human rights issues and bringing Thailand into the 21st century with some decent values! and ensuring the safety of tourists and ex pats, it wouldnt be rocket science!

Theo it doesnt surprise me, the Thai people have enjoyed being a country that has never been occupied, well once for a few hours by the Burmese and to this day Thais are absolutely petrified of the Burmese.! The Cambodians are correct in their dislike of the Thai people, in years gone by I have watched boat people from Cambodia come into Thai waters from Had Lek region into Koh Mak/Koh Chang and the police were called and they were so badly treated, beaten on the beaches, tortured on the beaches, and then we have the refugee camps for the Cambodians, which are constantly burnt down with no heed to man woman or children. Lets not forget the burmese a few weeks ago, beaten on the beaches (tourists cameras ripped from their hands!) same same eh! no difference!. Mama bear says to her thai children burmese, lao, cambodians, vietnamese and farang bad people, baby bears arent taught to question why? Look at the 5 star hotels in Bangkok built alongside Klong Toi (the slums), are the poor people now living in repentence because they committed a cardinal sin in years gone by and this is their karma lol lol?? Its the "beautiful syndrome" and no depth which I find disturbing, watch closely at Chatujak market in the animal hall, people buying up dogs fluffy and sweet, wait until some skin disease takes place and then dog is out on the street, same mentality no depth, no feeling, unable to love lol lol

Theo, the majority of Thai people I feel are so self effacing that they would not dare do what these scammers do day in day out. Thai culture is peaceful, honest and calm and inclusive of all.

This is a fascinating country that I truly feel more alive in, the trouble is the sickening corruption so ingrained within it that only serves and helps a small proportion of the populace.

When these criminals become large scale employers of Thai staff you end up with a large amount of people who are just honestly doing their jobs but at the top of the organistion the criminal element controls the pursestrings, this is why most even hard working Thai people are poor considering the countries dual first world , third world status. Third world because the country is held back by corruption, particularly in Bangkok.

My generalisation was aimed at the Somchai character who seems to have a feeling that deceiving people is justified just because they come from a foreign country, unbelievable racism and stupidity.

In my profession here I am constantly shaking my head at total disbelief at the lengths these people go to! And what happened to funds from the Tsunami, a policeman stole billions, to the extent that 5 european ambassadors have written to the thai government asking them what has happened to the funds!, a murder in a well renowned hospital in Bangkok of a young lad, murders of many many farang, body parts being sold! the list is endless, sorry Pighoglet but the days of the honest thai is long gone by. Two people of similar means both have 60,000 baht and want to vacation.

one (farang) has to pay 50,000 for a plane ticket to come to Thailand meaning he now has 10,000 left to buy taxis, food, hotel, water, tours etc etc etc. (ie, not much).

The other (thai) did not need to buy a plane ticket because he is already in Thailand and thus has his 60, 000 intact to spend as he wishes.

Stupid logic dictates that whomever has already spent his money still has the same amount left to spend on other things.

Most visitors to Thailand are considerably out of pocket due to the distance travelled and air ticket prices out of their own choosing because they like to come to Thailand for vacation, why do these Somchai characters think that they still have alot of money over for scamming?

Or its her boyfriend. Advice:Collect ALL the incoming money from customers yourself, camaras all over the place to observe not only the customers, but more important your wife and her family. Leave the bar only to go to the toilet. When you go home to sleep or want a day off lock it off all and dont give anybody a second key, this way you might stay in business for a couple of years.
And of course: hire a detective every once and a while to tail them. You might get some very interesting

Thais are experts at it.
Look at all the disfigured beggers all over bangkok.
The are put there by the BMA Police.
These same Police are harassing foreigners(2000 baht fine) all day long for flicking cigarette butts onto their filthy sidewalks.
Renting the sidewalks to porn vendors and copyright violators is another profitable business.
Any why are the footpaths in such bad condition? They steal the repair funds!

And, probably still are or have been sold allready. The Tsunami scam? 7 western countries have asked Thailand already what happened with the donated money. It just disappeared. Without leaving a trace. Strange. Like money of Icelands banks! Phuket is rebuild. But it is rebuild mostly with money from private investments. Hey, I'm 100% Thai but I grew up in the States, now I'm back and I hate living here. Does that tell you something? While we do have many places worth getting through ugly scams to visit, everyone will most likely run into scams even if you don't fall for it. And it is not done only to foreigners, I go through life everyday running into people even from big companies who find it perfectly fine to flat out lie, cheat, take your money and don't complete the job, or mess up a deal or a project and think you are cruel for making them take responsibility. The police don't hate foreigners, they hate doing their jobs, period, and regardless of nationality every officials will tell you to contact someone else so they don't have to work. I don't know about back then, but these days Thai people have no hospitality unless they want something from you. So the universal rule really IS beware of Thai people who approach you out of the blue, unless you're in a 5 star hotel no one is going to help you without expecting something in return (and even in hotels they do expect tip). But if you are the one asking for help from some random people, we are happy to help.

That said it is a wonderful country in terms of temples and beautiful beaches and it's cheap. While I am not saying that scams are ok in nature and I agree it ruins the experience, but it is a poor country with people making $200/month, what do you expect? If you think about it, even if you get ripped off here, it's only a small amount in US$, even if you add that up to your expense, it is still a bargain for the good things you will see here. Think of it this way, scams maybe the worst thing that can happen to you as oppose to murder, rape or other more serious crimes. It is a very safe country, much safer than America. And being ripped off 10-20 bucks here and there but not everywhere is the actual cost of traveling here. Thailand is worth a visit and is a bargain, but you can't come here expecting everything will work like in the west. Because nothing does and the word fairness is not in our dictionary. Be informed and brace yourself for a third world country and you may find your trip to Thailand quite delightful. (I at least feel our scams are much better than paying 30 euros for a 15-minute ride in a cab in Seychelles and 200 euros/night at a hotel that tells me to boil tap water for drinking or else it's 4 euros/bottle =_= )

After my research, we will not be going.
Too many scams to deal with.

Seems many of the scams are done by officials that should be looking after tourists!
Airport AOT Limo Scam
Duty Free Scam.
Taxi Touts.
Fake Tour Companies.
Taxi Mafia parked outside the hotels.
The TukTuks are all liars and scammers.
Numerous touts along the streets shoving sex brochures in every tourists face.
The Fake Student/Fake Survey scam.
Fake beggers working for the BMA.
BMA Police stalking cigarette smokers.
Thai Police pulling over taxies and searching foreigners.
Fake friendly people at every tourist spot telling lies to every tourist they meet.
Overcharging at Ocean World and Thai Boxing etc.
Special menus for foreigners.
Gem scam.
Suit scam.
Porn and copyright material sold all over the footpaths.
Taxi Mafia at the resorts.
Pollution.
Corruption.
Riots............................

I recently stayed at Sukhumvit Soi 11.
I never imagined there would be so many rude Thais.
Outside the hotel were many taxies but NONE would use the meter,. Most of them looked like thugs.
About 30 or more lowlife types approached us or blocked the footpath, forcing a massage parlor brochure at us or trying to scam us....
Every Tuk Tuk we talked with wanted to give the famous 20 baht tour...a rip off scheme.
THAT WAS IN THE FIRST 100 METERS ON OUR FIRST WALK AROUND BANGKOK.
We cut our stay short and went to Malaysia early.
Thailand musthave been a nice place at one time but--- not now.

The most disgusting beggars aggressively block the footpaths.
We were shocked at the double pricing we found.

Sukhumvit 11 and thereabouts is probably one of the most densely populated scam taxi, tuk tuk etc areas there is. Gets a little better further down the road towards the area near emporium / phrom pong soi 24 where many Japanese and Koreans stay, they dont put up with this scam crap so the tuk tuks and scam taxis gravitate towards nana between 3 and 19 odds ,4 and 20 evens where more westerners stay and around any large hotels.

Each to his own but personally Id give the ladyboys a very wide berth so as not to be a target, alot of them are in gangs, many taking yarba and to a large section of police this is tolerated as its "lady boy just do her job" IE pickpocketing, attacking and assault on foreigners is supposedly ok because the perpertrators are trans-gender.

One man recently in Jomtien spurned a lady boys advances and soon three of them appeared out of the shadows, attacked him and cut the back of his neck. Nasty.

Amazing when you read how many people are attacked beaten or even stabbed by these men who chose to be ladyboys and rely on crime to survive.

I don't know who I have less respect for - the scammers or the people sucked in by them.
Thailand is still a great place for a holiday, if you keep your head screwed on and don't believe a word of anyone who approaches you. Don't even make eye contact with someone trying to sell you a tour/suit/massage etc.
Would you believe them if they approached you in your home city? Of course not. Just because you're on holiday, don't check your brain at immigration.
I've lived here for 2 years, and visited several times as a tourist and can honestly say I've not lost a single baht to a tout or scammer. If you really want that tour/suit/massage etc, get a recommendation from someone you trust - ie not a Thai - and go direct to the provider, showing no interest in alternative offers.
...
written by pighoglet, Thu 07 May 2009 02:56:41 CDT
Never been scammed myself other than the odd over exuberant taxi driver but so many do its not their fault, some are greedy, some are just too trusting.

People who get scammed arent always in the wrong and I would side with any victim over a criminal.

ps) The man who got his neck cut was cut by men, but there have been many attacks by ladyboys particularly in Jomtien or late at night on walking street, Pattaya.

"Avoid The Black African too they are everywhere now.."

Thaigirl Down under, I'm an Aussie, and I'm totally shocked and sickened by your racism! I bet you plaster your face with skin lightening creams, morning noon and night?

I'm sorry but so am I, OZ ex-pat living here and I have to agree with Down Under. I'm no redneck racist but here's the play - met this guy at the Sky Train claims t be a student and his irst time in Bangkok (Oh sorry Black African-not to be racisit but to distinguish between lets say White South African.... Honestly people!) So the guy has tourist map in hand. Strangley I'm dressed for work so didn't pick his mark to well. After asking me a few questions about how to get arround I provided a few answers, then he says how he doesn't know anyone here and would like maybe to catch up for a drink later. 1/2 dubious I say sure. An SMS later the day asking 'what's up' Im thinking ok give this guy a break and invite him out after work for drink with some friends (not entirely stupid myself saftey in numbers) So give him some directions, meet in Soi Cowboy. Im there first with my GF, and meet one mate whos in the bathroom. At which time this guy rocks up- however with a rather sizeable friend. So 1 bell rings (this guy was supposed to know no body, some breif introductions, I'd already clue up the GF that this may not be legit, then it's "listen can we go somewhere where we can talk..?" (DING! BELL 2) So at this point my mates back from the toilet, some more introductions. Im like sure fire away what you ant to talk about? It's like no not here. Two other colleagues arrive and start talking food, so after gauging my disinterest to leave alone the second guy dissappears cross the road (to whom ...?) and the orignal 'Poor lonely tourist' soon leaves with a feeble excuse is not to interested in coming for dinner and remains, a little dis-heartend their scam obviously didn't get to th second play. So yes the Nigerian Internet Scam just became LIVE. SORRY FACTS

that said - aisde from that I find the people extreemly nice and accomodating, and agree its a safer place to walk around than most Aust. Cities also.

Be wary an the place will be very rewarding.

Having arrived in Bangkok for our annual month in Thailand, my Thai wife and I were going up the escalator to the departure level, when two taxi touts appeared at the top of the escalator shouting "Sir, Taxi".

They got a bit of a shock when I responded in tonally correct Thai; "Mai Ow! Mii Kon Kap Rot" which means (impolitely) "Don't want! I have a driver!". They quickly disappeared, and my brother in law appeared with his "welcome to Thailand" smile.

Whenever we use taxis in Thailand, I always sit in front, and take a photo of the front photo license and the number plate on the back door. And make sure the driver knows what I am doing.

Sorry Somchai, your kind aren't going to rip us off.

These basic training rules are observed by all practicing Buddhist lay men and women. Everyone visiting any Buddhist Monastery, including addicts and visitors to the Thamkrabok Monastery, should observe and respect these basic principles.

(1) I undertake the precept to refrain from destroying living creatures.

(2) I undertake the precept to refrain from taking that which is not given.

(3) I undertake the precept to refrain from sexual misconduct.

(4) I undertake the precept to refrain from incorrect speech.

(5) I undertake the precept to refrain from intoxicating drinks and drugs which lead to carelessness.

The Money Change Scam, the Gas Pump Scam, and Metered Taxis better than Tuk-tuks and How to Use a Mobile Phone to Beat Away cons and Touts.

In Western countries it is my experience that when you buy something you hand your money to the cashier and then they hand you your change and then and only then do they hand you your bag of merchandise. It's all done fairly quickly and efficiently.

But in Thailand, the 7-11 and other employees have realized that we dumb tourists are not paying attention so they do a variation of the following: They take your money, and then--before they give you your change--they hand you your bag. Many of us are accustomed to walking out the door as soon as we're given our purchase. Our brains have been programmed: 'oh, bag in hand means it's time to go.' So that is what we do: leave the shop before we get our change.

But a smart variation on this is the following. The clerk takes your money, hands you your bag, and and then proceeds to count your change, and maybe even give you part of the change you are owed such as the bigger notes while the clerk continues to look for (the remaining) change, or bend down to find more change/bills that his/her register is supposedly lacking. This all takes many seconds and, if you're not paying attention, you may think you've been handed all you are owed and--with a line of customers behind you--you just want to leave the store especially since they already put your bag in your hand and the cute girls behind the counter are smiling at you. Have you heard the expression: disarmed with a smile?

I always keep my wallet and my hand out--thrust slightly forward so they can see I am the one waiting--, with my brain having already been programmed by me: "don't leave until they have put change in your hand and you've put it in your wallet." Also, make sure you have already done the math in your head so you can see you are being handed the correct amount. It is quite amazing to me how long it takes them to count and then recount and maybe even triple-count your change. Some (not all) of them are waiting for the stupid tourist to walk out the door without having been given their change.

And, when buying gas, always get out of your vehicle and check the meter on the pump and make sure there is not already 100 or more baht rung up on it before your gas is pumped. Because a typical scam is for you to drive up to pump, tell them to put 1000 baht in (or fill it up or whatever) little realizing that the employees didn't clear the meter from previous customer.

And, if you want a foolproof way to avoid having to interract with touts, hustlers and tuk-tuk drives on the street, carry a mobile phone and, as soon as you see them start to talk to you, you simply raise the mobile phone to your ear, pretending to talk/listen. Amazing how even Thai cons respect someone on their mobile phone and will leave you alone.

Arrange your bills in your wallet so that the numeral denomination is facing so you can see it. It is easy when you first arrive to confuse a 500 baht slightly red note with a 100 baht slightly different shade of red note. This way you know what you are giving them, and you can even say it outloud: "Here is 500 baht" announcing to them and to others around exactly how much you are putting in their hands.

And please tell all your friends: metered taxis in Bangkok are much cheaper and better than just about any tuk-tuk. Tourists somehow think metered taxis are expensive. They're not. Tuk-tuks are expensive, noisy, polluting and you may find yourself in a very undesireable situtation with a rip off tuk tuk driver.

Just make sure taxi you take says "Meter" on it and make sure driver turns meter on when you get in. Do not negotiate for a fare with a taxi driver. Just go by the meter, it's inexpensive.

British couple fights Bangkok airport extortionists
Two tourists were held by an airport gang until they paid up £8,000
Stephen Ingram & Cissy Lin

Stephen Ingram and Xi Lin were falsely accused of stealing from a shop at Bangkok airport

A British couple who were falsely accused of shoplifting in Bangkok airport and were forced to pay £8,000 in bribes to secure their release are to take legal action for compensation.

They were the victims of an extortion racket that has ensnared other foreign travellers at the airport, which handles most of the 800,000 British visitors to Thailand every year.

Stephen Ingram, 49, and Xi Lin, 45, both technology professionals from Cambridge, were detained by security guards as they went to board Qantas flight QF1 to London on the night of Saturday, April 25.

They were accused of taking a Givenchy wallet worth £121 from a King Power duty-free shop and were handed over to the police. An official release order from the local Thai prosecutor’s office subsequently conceded there was no evidence against them.

They were freed five days later after a frightening ordeal in which they said they were threatened and held against their will at a cheap motel on the airport perimeter until they had handed over the money.

The bribes were paid to an intermediary named Sunil “Tony” Rathnayaka, a Sri Lankan national in his fifties who works as a “volunteer” interpreter for Thailand’s tourist police (motto: “To serve and to protect”).

“Our main motivation is to protect other innocent British tourists from being caught up in this nightmare,” said Ingram last week. “We intend to take every legal means to recover our money and obtain justice.”

Last week Rathnayaka admitted in a telephone interview that he had received cash and money transfers amounting to more than £7,000 from the Britons. He said the money was for police bail and for a payment to a figure he called “Little Big Man” who could withdraw the case against them.

“In Thailand everyone knows it’s like that,” he said. “They can go to jail or they can just pay a fine and go home. It is corruption, you know?”

Rathnayaka also agreed that the “bail” — about £4,000 — was never returned to Ingram and Xi. Thai law says bail should be refunded.

In a detailed statement the couple said they were first detained at an airport office of the tourist police and later taken to cells at a police station in an isolated modern building on the fringes of the airport.

Rathnayaka confirmed that he met them in the cells on the morning of Sunday, April 26, and arranged the “bail”. The police kept the couple’s passports. Rathnayaka then escorted Ingram and Xi to the Valentine Resort, a lurid pink motel a few hundred yards from the runways. They were to remain there for four days.

During that time, Rathnayaka warned them not to tell anyone about their plight, especially the British embassy, lawyers, friends, family or the press.

However, on April 27 they sneaked out of the hotel and found their way to the embassy, where they met Kate Dufall, the pro-consul.

According to the couple, she told them the embassy could not interfere with the Thai legal system and put them in contact with Prachaya Vijitpokin, a lawyer.

Vijitpokin and a colleague, Kittamert Engchountada, of the Lawyers Association of Thailand, urged them to stay in the country to fight the case and have since assembled a dossier for potential prosecutions.

However, Ingram said the couple were so terrified by this stage that they decided to meet the demands for money, which they raised by bank transfers from Britain direct to Rathnayaka’s account. The Sunday Times has copies of the transactions.

Ingram and Xi were put on a British Airways flight to London early on Friday, May 1, having received their passports with official documents from prosecutors and police stating that no charges were to be brought against them.

They have said they are willing to return to Thailand and testify to try to stop the extortion if the government will guarantee their safety.

That could become a priority for Thailand, which has suffered a series of blows to its tourist industry through economic and political upheaval.

Inquiries last week established that Rathnayaka and his accomplices have continued preying on tourists who end up in police custody after being accused of theft from the airport duty-free shop. “I am just helping people,” he explained. “I don’t get paid to do this. All the embassies know me.”

Officials at the Danish embassy confirmed that a Danish woman fell into Rathnayaka’s hands about two weeks ago and was allowed to leave Thailand only after handing over more than £4,500.

When a Sunday Times journalist posing as a businessman in trouble contacted Rathnayaka last week, the first thing he said was: “If it’s a case, for example, of shoplifting at the airport duty-free then I can help. Bail is 100,000 baht (£1,800).” He later declined an interview, saying the Sri Lanka embassy — which employs him as an interpreter — had told him not to speak.

The Foreign Office said consular officials had offered to raise the case with the Thai authorities at the time but had been asked by the couple not to intervene.

A spokesman for King Power duty-free said the company had strict rules for evidence to be submitted to the police in shoplifting cases, but added: “We cannot control what happens after that.”

Subject: PLS READ TO AVOID TROUBLE - Customs and the airports...

All those who travel a lot, please be very very careful. Read ahead...
An Indian was detained in Bangkok for stealing a box of cigarettes in a duty-free shop in Bangkok International Airport. He had paid for chocolates and a carton of cigarettes. The cashier put a packet of cigarettes extra into his bag and he thought it was a free pack. He was arrested for shop-lifting and the Thai Police extortion price was 30,000 Baht for his release. He spent two nights in jail and paid 500 Baht for an air-conditioned cell, 200-300 baht for each visitor, and 11,000 baht for his final release. The Police shared the money in front of his eyes. On top of that, he was charged in court and fined 2,000 baht by the magistrate and handcuffed and escorted to his plane. His passport was stamped "Thief". While there, his relatives requested help from the Indian Embassy and was told that they are helpless, many Asians are victimised similarly daily and letters and phone-calls to the Thai authorities are ignored. He shared a cell with a Singaporean the first night who paid 60,000 baht for his release. The second night was a Malaysian national who paid 70,000 baht.

Mind you this was not in a shanty shop in downtown Bangkok but in a duty free shop at the Bangkok Int'l Airport. BE WARNED. The above 100% correct information because Mr.Rajan Khera's customer from India faced exactly the same scenario mentioned above when he was in transit at Bangkok Int'l Airport coming to Taipei.

Someone who went through the same ordeal in Dubai. He bought stuff at the Duty Free upon entering. The girl at Duty Free put a bottle of cologne in his shopping bag (he did not even see it happen). He was arrested for stealing ( this is before he even picked up his luggage ). He sat at the airport jail (where he was harassed for the whole day. (NO FOOD, NO WATER) for one day and only after he paid a fine (bribe of US 500..). That is all the cash he had in his pocket at the time. They let him go. These are scams that are happening all over the place. Please BE CAREFUL! All of this is pre-planned and the people who work at the airport know who to target.

Jaywalkers subject of police blitz
By John Le Fevre

BANGKOK (thaivisa.com): -- People who fail use crosswalks or footbridges will start receiving on-the-spot Bt200 (about $US5.88) fines from traffic police commencing August 1.

People who drop litter, including cigarette butts in a city almost bereft of public ashtrays or rubbish bins are already subject to fines of up Bt2,000 (about $US58.76) and now police have decided to target jaywalkers in a city where crossing the road is often a mad dash followed by furtive creeping steps to avoid cars and motorcycles that pay little regard for pedestrians.

For their part, impatient Bangkokians are known to attempt to dash between cars, or walk out from in front of buses directly into the path of traffic, often without looking.

Traffic police chief Police Major Weerapat Tansrisakul said traffic police in Bangkok will begin to arrest people who crossed the street without using crosswalks, footbridges, and other crossways.

He said the area around Victory Monument, Silom Road and Ratchaprasong Junction will receive the initial focus and urged people to comply with the traffic laws for their own safety.

BANGKOK – A major police crackdown on illegal taxis and unlicensed guides is to start next week at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport, the Airports of Thailand has warned.

The move came after Transport Minister Sohpon Zarum made an inspection trip to the airport and ordered the AoT to step up measures to prevent extortion gangs preying on international air passengers.

The Bangkok Post reports that organised gangs are allegedly operating from duty-free shops, and are “cheating tens of thousands of baht from foreign tourists”.

The reports claim that the gangs, apparently operating in collusion with shop employees and rogue policemen, intimidate and browbeat accused foreign shoplifters and thieves into paying large "fines" in order to escape lengthy incarceration and trial and return to their own countries.

At least one European country has warned its citizens not to shop in the duty-free area of Suvarnabhumi at all, and the alleged cheating has been featured in reports by the BBC, among others.

The duty-free scams are in addition to the longtime Bangkok airport problems of so-called "black-licence taxis" which have no authorisation to carry passengers, and airport touts who try to steer arriving tourists to unwanted hotels and shady businesses.

One British couple, accused of shoplifting but released after five days without charges being laid, are currently at the centre of bribery accusations involving airport police.

I've been on my honeymoon last July. Now I wish I would have seen this site some days before. I got scamed everyday there in Bangkok ( thousands of euros ).
I think we should talk about this on the TV. Perhaps if we do it, one day, when the tourists stop chosing Bangkok for destination, they will change a little bit.

I have been in Bangkok many times, and I am well aware of the scams that are going on. In year 08, Nov, I took a taxi from the hotel lobby, told the driver to take me to the international airport, encountered a slight traffic congestion before reaching the highway, and not long after, the driver said to me in broken english "airport no go, traffic jam" I was thinking "what the f" I will not fall to a scam like this, I have a flight to catch and insisted to goto airport regardless of an assisted phone call from his mobile phone to explain to me on the situation, in the end I reached the airport, much to my dismay, there was this yellow shirt mob activity going on forcing a closure on the airport, i had no choice but to head back to the city, i felt apologetic to the driver as I have doubted his "intention", so other than paying for the taxi fare, asked him to keep the 300 baht change as well. It is good to know what to expect, but do expect the unexpected :)

i vistit thailand every other year, started phuket then koh samui twice and back to phuket in a few weeks, always visiting bk on the way bacck for a few nights.

As a tourist i appreciate and reward not being ripped off,

i.e. if i feel they're trying to overcharge (by my prices not thai) i'll knock the price to less than i was willing to pay (no tip at end) or move on.

If i feel the price is fair - i'll barter a bit see if they'll go lower then pay the original price plus an extra 10% or 100bht (which ever is more) as i enjoy the game.

by trying to overcharge me wastes they're time and mine and results in you getting less than you would have originally if anything.

I've never been scammed in thailand but not for lack of people trying, the best advice as for everything is be aware of what goes on and don't be a sucker, oh and make sure you get to MBK for some great deals!!.

On another note - to the contrevorsial somchai (hopefully you can understand/are english so can respond to this) - it takes me 2 years of saving to be able to go on holiday and I have limited spending money for my stay (normally around £400-£600 for 3 weeks) as such paying stupid taxi rates isn't an option (depending on where i stay i work out the average cost and may rent a quad) , taxis are expensive over here due to rip off fuel (around 70bht a litre) as opposed to 30-40bht a litre over their, add to that the monthly cost of radio rental, taxi licence, income tax, national insurance, car insurance, public liability insurance etc etc you get the picture.

Over the years i have seen the changes over there - i hope they haven't changed that much that this will be my last visit

One time while walking through Pat Pong road I witnessed 2 foriegners come tumbling out of one of the rip off show bars on Pat Pong Soi 1 close to the Silom Road entrance.

The both of them were fighting like mad men with several young Thai guys as they spilled out onto the street and I remember one of them was being accousted by 3 Thai guys who were getting the better of him but nothing too serious as he was fending them off well enough.

Meantime the other foriegner was basically kicking the shit out of the the 2 Thai Guys trying to beat on him and they soon backed off but the foriegner, a healthy and fit young man was taunting them to "Bring it on assholes" but the 2 Thai guys knew they would lose to this guy.

Being momentarily pre-occupied this guy looks over to see his friend taking a bit of a licking by the 3 other Thai guys and he runs over and proceeds to kick the shit out of the 1 and then 2 of the other Thai guys and now his friend gets a second wind and takes on the remaining of the 3 Thai guys and the 2 foriegners quickly subdued the 3 Thais and they also quickly backed off.

I was standing there watching all of this 10 feet away and I was waiting for several other Thai guys near by to get in on the "Beat the Foriegners mentality" but nothing more happened other than the one young kid standing there shouting at his assailants and telling them they were all a "bunch of pussies" and "bring it on assholes"

His friend was eager to leave the scene but the 1 kid wanted to fight because you could see he was all pumped and ready to seriously fight with the Thai guys.

It was then that I walked up to the 2 of them and befriended them and said:"Come on ..I'll buy you guys a drink" while smiling at the Thais and saying: "My Bah Lie Nah" ( never mind, right)

I spent the next hour with these 2 young Americans and gave them some pointers about which bars to avoid and how to maintain their patience and anger and not to get too drunk in unfamiliar territory.

The 1 kid was so happy that he had taken on 5 of them but I told them they were lucky they did not get a serious beating by way of 10 or more of them getting in on the act using any available object in near reach as a weapon to hurt you big time.

I remember the 2 of them because I liked the idea of a little "pay back" happening to those creeps and criminals who perpetrate those blatant tourist rip offs and these 2 guys obviously stood their ground and where not afraid to fight their way out of the bar after being accousted to pay some ridiculous inflated bar bill.

Chalk up 1 for the foreigners...ha ha
